So many great quotes. Remain curious, conducting is about enabling not power- I’m paraphrasing here - this remarkable human being has so much to teach us. A fantastic interview and thank you Classic FM for sharing
Simon Rattle really turned his back on me ever since I was a small child - my mum used to take me to watch CBSO rehearsals in Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and Sir Rattle was generally pretty busy politely reminding the orchestra of the concept of room for improvement, all the time with his back to us. Now I look back and think how privileged I was to sit in that auditorium for free and absorb what I absorbed, and now when I watch Rattle summoning up Beethoven's 9th from the Vienna Philharmonic it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my legs. This man is a musical legend.
We have followed Simon ever since he took over the CBSO from Louis Fremaux. We try to see him at the Barbican whenever he's in town. We have never been disappointed in any of his concerts and particularly enjoyed 'Jenifer' last year. On Thursday we are looking forward to his 70th Birthday concert at the Barbican. Really diverse programme. Bring it on Simon. (Reds doing OK too)

He’s a Scoucer at heart. He loves the Beatles and Liverpool F.C. For him “ Revolver “ is the greatest album ever.
He is so intelligent and eloquent
