    In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Band-Maid.
    A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
    I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

      Subtitles? Interviews - always. Songs - rarely. Band-Maid communicate so well through the music, including Saiki's emotional delivery, that I don't need the words. Saiki's voice is a great instrument. Classical music often comes in German, Italian, or Latin -- what's the problem with listening to songs in foreign languages? Most of the world has to listen to songs in a foreign language called English. They cope, so can we.

    Rush had been my #1 favorite band for over 30 years and I have seen them live 13 times. After buying and listening all of Band-Maid's music and attending one show in Detroit, they have knocked Rush off the top spot. In my opinion, Rush fans tend to become fans of Band-Maid because both bands are similar in the following ways.....1. Talented musicianship 2. Great song writing. 3. No egos. 4. Mutual love and respect between all band members. 5. They don't take themselves too seriously. 6. They truly love what they do.

    • @deanwolfechannel

      thanks for pointing that out. You are right: it's not the just the music and Rush had all the right stuff behind the music: like you say friendship and truly not to be overlooked: commitment!! and all the other stuff you mention. Band Maid stand out as my favourite J-Rock too though there's so many Japanese bands I love it's hard to pick a favourite.

    I like it when Reactors watch fancams too. It shows that they care about the band, their musicality and their stage presence with all these little treasures that you don't see otherwise, and don't care too much about the sound, which seems to be the main criterion for a good video in some almost stereotypical comments. Even with a not-so-good recording, you can "filter out" the important things and fade out some shortcomings, which undoubtedly increases the enjoyment. But for this you have to have the appropriate willingness and the right ears.

    I'm almost certain they're using rented equipment. They're lucky they got their instruments there (Kanami had to borrow a PRS at one stop because hers didn't make it). MISA uses Orange, Miku uses EVH, and Kanami has Mesa.

    I'm going to guess at least 3 reasons:
    1) Most Rush fans (in my experience) are Rock/Hard Rock fans first, Prog Fans second. Literally every construction site I've worked in over 20 years you have the classic rock playing and Rush is always featured. I am going to put money that MOST of my co workers have no clue what a time signature is. They just know Rush sounds great, and rock.
    2) The ones who are Prog First/Rock Second I think recognize the talent of the members. Even if not directly Prog Music, these are top shelf instrumentalists. Most Proggies I know appreciate it. Game recognizes game.
    3) Even though they aren't "Prog", they do have a lot of unconventional elements to their songs, from the constant riff shifts, Misa basically playing a bass solo EVERY DANG SONG, Akane doing all sorts of trickery in her ever shifting fills to make what is usually 4/4 sound like it's not, etc.
    Just my thoughts.

Variety in music and in life is a wonderful thing! This is one of my favorite Band-Maid clips. To each their own but it boggles my clearly limited imagination how anyone couldn't love it.

    This show was in 2019 at the House of Blues in Dallas. They were relegated to the smaller venue that only has a capacity of 250. I didn't go see them because at that time I had never heard of them. In a couple of months, they will back at the House of Blues in Dallas and I will be there too. They now have the main concert venue so I will be one out of about 1500 maidiacs. October 21 can't get here soon enough
    BTW, I am a huge Rush fan. I was born in 1960 so the 70s was my decade. I can still remember the first time I listened to 2112. It remains my favorite Rush album because of the impact it had on me.

    The amp you referenced may be Miku's replacement amp as her's caught fire during the sound check and delayed the show about 30 minutes while they got a replacement. Thank you Roger Coker for these excellent videos. His view was much better than mine that night. Still a magica evening. I'll be seeing them again this year at both Texas shows.

      I've had an amp almost catch fire at a rehearsal once too. It filled the room with smoke.

  • @psul42
    @psul42 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Miku's normal amp is a EVH III. The JazzChorus is obviously a back line rental. In the Europe/US tour that year you can often see her with Marshalls too. JazzChorus' are great pedal platforms so I imagine that's why it was chosen in this case. I was a massive Rush fan in HS but I do admit they started to lose me after Signals. Still have enormous respect for them however. Band-Maid and Zappa are my favorite musicians currently.

    Nevertheless, kanami is such a genius that she is able to create such high quality music.

  • @snakewhisperer1
    @snakewhisperer1 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Excellent reaction! Yes, Miku normally plays through a EVH half stack. But when they tour the US, they only bring their instruments and either rent or use the backline the venue has available. I noticed MIsa's using an Ampeg while her amp is Orange. It does look like they managed to procure a Mesa Triple Rec for Kanami though. That's what she normally plays.

    • @deanwolfechannel
      @deanwolfechannel  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wonder if she was happy with the Roland amp, as it's gold for clean sounds, but for distortion, it's harder to work with. I intend to try it with distortion myself but that's not why I bought it.

    • @snakewhisperer1
      @snakewhisperer1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Her pedal board is pretty comprehensive, so I'm guessing that's where she gets her tone. Personally, I'm a straight into the amp kind of guy. But I'm just playing local beer joints rather than touring abroad.

    • @guitarandy2406
      @guitarandy2406 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deanwolfechannel Miku will usually used a Marshall half stack for rented backline (foreign) gigs, with a clean-ish/crunch sound as a base to work from, however as others have said the one she was using literally started smoking partway through soundcheck earlier in the day. This JC120 was either an emergency backup brought along for the tour or part of the the in-house venue back-line.
      In smaller clubs and rehearsal spaces in Japan, the JC120 is as ubiquitous as Marshall and Miku used to use one for chunks of the earlier Rickenbacker days, so it wasn't a total shock to the system. Plus this was in the period not long after she'd transitioned from a Divided By 13 amp to the 5150's and was still relying on a Diezel V4 pedal for her main distortion sound.

If you want to explore before seeing them live, then an example set of songs on their official channel that illustrates this is Manners/Black Hole (live; two songs, one video), Gion-cho, Sayonakidori (live acoustic; may be taken down any day), Alone, Wonderland (live), Rinne, Choose Me (live), Bubble.
