The Ohio State Band does a different show every week. They actually spend more time on the practice field each week than the football team. Because there are rules for football. But not for Bands. Marching Band and Field Bamd are very common in the US. Most high schools, even small ones, have a band. And yes, speaking from personal experience, it's hours and hours of practice!
I went to OSU. First year, my dorm room overlooked the band's practice field, so I got to see/hear them practicing in the afternoons during the season. It was honestly great; I had been on my HS marching band's dance squad all through high school so it was more fun to watch the practices for me anyway :D
Yes, every weekend. And the band has one week in which to learn the music and the marching routine for the figures formed, because each week the theme is different and the show is different. (And just so you know, it is *not* simply "follow the leader." Have a look at The Ohio State Marching Band Ramp Entrance and Script Ohio, which isn't "follow the leader," either.)
Ohio State does a different halftime show for every home game, not one per season. However, my high school marching band did the same one all season EXCEPT the rivalry game, they did a "special one", so only two per season for my high school.
It boggles my mind that they are playing instruments, while marching in crazy choreographed movements. AND, they do new routines with every home game. They have a cool one on TH-cam about the movies that is cool too. Thankfully, I was a majorette, so I was twirling a baton at the front & didn't have to do all that crazy stuff. This in Ohio & they were playing their arch enemies from the University of Michigan.
I was in marching band for 8 years. We had practice just as much as all the other fall sports, and gave up the month of august every year for band camp. Definitely it’s own form of sport. We were always drenched in sweat after every show. In high school, we went to marching band competitions almost every Saturday in the fall and played at every home football game, which was most Friday nights in September and October.
I was in a marching band for a few years and was drum major for one of them. It was so much fun. I wish pro American football games would have marching bands in some of their halftime shows again. They still did it when I was a kid.
Every college team has a marching band that performs at halftime, during the game, they're in the stands playing their team fight songs and keeping the fans rowdy.
I went to THE Ohio State University and still live here. There's a new field show every week and why they're The Best Damn Band in the Land 😊 GO BUCKS!!!
I was in the marching band and entered competitions, so during those times I got to see the other marching bands. It was super fun. I did in college for a while too. So you memorize the music and sets separately. Once both are memorized, the music, how many steps you take, your stopping point, and how fast and at what angle you need to do it in, then we combine everything. It was actually the whole point of band camp. To give us a chance to memorize everything before school starts and to get us back into marching shape. The football team is not supposed to enter the field until the marching band is done. We generally make the shows to fit the assigned time, so they likely came out early.
@donnabert Nope! I still watch shows, play in community band, an ensemble, and about to do the symphony as well. I love band. There are those who hated it, but there are many who loved it too.
@@kays4290 I'm glad you liked it. My sister was an awesome trumpet player but quit in high school as if you were in the band you were required to do marching band as well and she had other hobbies that she liked better.
New sub watched a few things and like your vibe. Try a Texas A & M doing the crossover. Big surprise because it’s different than the usual college marching band.
My grandpa was in the drumline of the band and he told me there were plenty of collisions moving through those gaps resulting in some bloody noses they had to play through.
Even my small high school (less than 200 students grades 9-12) had a marching band that performed every home game half-time (right side up to home team side). I was in that band so never saw our performances from the stands but I loved watching from the stands in college. All of the big colleges had phenomenal marching bands.
I was in marching band for a couple years in highschool. Considering the size of my school, we did rather well in competitions in what not. Certainly weren't operating on this level, which shouldn't be super surprising.
Marched in college, New show every home game, plus we marched Soldier Field in Chicago (Bears v Giants - awesome experience!). The band always plays to the home stands, under the announcers box.
They're known as TBDBITL, which stands for The Best Damn Band In The Land. They do a new show every week. In their tribute to the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's "Bad" they made him moonwalk. If you watch it, go to the four minute mark and check it out.
I was in our high school’s marching band. It was a lot of work learning the show but loads of fun too. We would work up our basic show for each season and perform it for every game, with minor tweaks by changing or adding a song here and there, but it’s basically the same show for every game. People don’t really get tired of it because the home games are spaced apart and only a few of them. One of my favorite things was playing in the stands during the game. We’d get our own competition going with the other band.
The Ohio State Marching Band (TBDBITL) is a sight to behold. I remember going to my first game as a student and it was absolutely incredible. Every game is a different show and they have this level of excellence at EVERY game. TBDBITL is an absolute unit
My son has been his high school marching band for 3 years and loves it. It is extremely hard work and dedication. They practice almost everyday, they not only do football games they do competitions also 🎉😊
Fun fact from Ohio: you can go anywhere in Ohio (usually to a place that has a large crowd) and yell O. H. and someone will answer I. O. !! It is fun to try it out of state to see if anyone from Ohio is at the event.
I was in our high school marching band for four years, and for another year in college at Northern Illinois University. The number of hours we practiced, not just the choreography, but the music as well, would boggle your mind. When I was with the NIU Marching Husky Show Band (our mascot was a Husky Dog), we went down to Tampa Bay, Florida to play half-time at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game, and we marched in the Main Street Parade at Disney World. Half-time shows generally last for about 30 minutes or so while the teams rest between the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the game. Not all half-time shows are filmed, but the Ohio State University Marching Buckeyes is one of the best marching bands in the country.
I'm 85 years old and was in a marching band in high school. It was so much fun. Most high schools and colleges/universities have marching bands in America. Enjoyed your reaction and also enjoyed watching the Ohio State Marching Band. They're so good.
Thanks Brit guy for reminding those of us who grew up watching the Buckeye Marching Band (and I sat in the student section there in the early 60's) just how really amazing they are.
I used to work at one of the buildings near Ohio State University stadium (AKA the Horeseshoe or The Shoe by its original shape, but they eventually enclosed the open end). Sometimes i had to go into work on Sat (most games on Sat) but heck no on game days. The parking lot is packed with tailgaters hours before game time. For people not familiar with American tailgating: bring your coolers of beverages, food, grills to cook on, chairs, etc and set that all up at the tail end of your vehicle or nearby area not blocking traffic (in the lawn). Party before the game...then go to the game...and even party a bit while waiting for the traffic to subside. (Tailgating is also done at concerts, etc). Some people, who don't have tickets to the game, will even go just to party and hang out. They also bring their TVs (sometimes big screen) to watch the game. Its the whole atmosphere that's exciting. Drinking, dancing, music, playing games... Loved the video! I only expected to see the band do Script Ohio and maybe a few other moves. There's a good reason why OSU is called The Best Damn Band in the Land!
I'm so happy you reacted to the Ohio state matching band. Their are marching bands at college/uni level and most start at highschool level. Everyone should definitely experience going to watch bands, especially go watch the National Battle of the Bands which is actually gonna be later in Aug. The best bands come from all over and it truly is an experience to watch them perform in person.
I was in the University of Iowa marching band, and as others have said: we had a new show to learn for all 7 home games, many times with 1 week to prepare. The season started in the heat of summer and ended in the cold of winter - often in snow. Was hard work but very rewarding and got to meet countless great and talented people.... well worth it 👌
While this is a College Marching Band, these kids start learning to do this in high school in Marching Band. I went to two different high schools because we moved, and each Marching Band had a different show for Home and Away games. They practiced a lot starting in July in the heat and humidity for two to three hours a day Monday thru Saturday.
I played in marching band in high school and college (back in the dark ages). The halftime show was new every week. There is usually a pre-game show as well, but it doesn't change as much. We started before school started in the fall. Then 2 hours per day, 4 days per week. You had to learn the music outside of rehearsal on your own time. At the beginning of practice on Mondays, we watched films of the halftime show to see if anyone was out of line or out of step and if there was a problem we needed to fix. Home games took about 6 hours on Saturday. Away games, we often reported to the buses before sunrise and returned very late, depending on the distance to be travelled. Each person's stride length had to be the same. Depending on the formation, there was usually 6 steps in 5 yards or 8 steps in five yards. I can still - 40+ years later - measure the size of a room with my step. When there is a formation that is not a straight line, the step size could change with each step, depending on your position in the curve. It was a crazy amount of work, but I still smile when I remember those days.
High school and college football - marching band performs at halftime every game. The stadium is generally "divided" with home team on one side, visitors on the other. Visiting team will perform first and oriented towards the home team side. The home team performs after them, oriented towards the visitor side. So the video you reacted to was from the visitor's side of the stands. The flourish at the end of spelling out Ohio in script was facing the home team's side. My daughter was in marching band in both high school and college. They start practicing for the school year close to a month before school started, so in August. In Texas that is our hottest month with temperatures frequently in the triple digits (F) and they are out in the asphalt parking lot (in high school, that is) from early morning (cooler) to late afternoon. They are learning songs and getting the configurations to work, so yes, they work very hard on this, as well as keeping their academics up. But they're young and enjoy it. And yes those uniforms & hats stink. 😁
I was in the Marching band for my University, University of Edinboro in Pennsylvania and we performed the halftime show at a Pittsburgh Steelers Game. WE performed different shows for every university football game too.
There are people who go to the concession stand during the game and stay in the stands for the band, and vice versa. I was in a band directed by the guy that wrote the music for Ohio State. It is all choreographed and you memorize your "dance steps" and memorize all the music for a different show each week. This is why they are called "The Best Damn Band in the Land." They do "Script Ohio" every week so they have a lot of practice.
I was in the marching band at UNC and we did a different halftime show each home game. The pregame show was the same for the whole season though. It was so much fun!! I played one of the bass drums.
Yep, every game... I was in my HS Marching band, played snare drum . It's a thing here. Home games and away games. And OSU band's nick name is "Best Damn Band in the Land!"
I played flute late 1970s early 80s. Still have all the music. Original flute and still play. My school marched opening of New York Thanksgiving Macy's Parade 1983. Warren County Senior High School McMinnville Tennessee High School for sure go to to marching competitions. Awards are given to the different band member size. "A" class is massive band. Based on technique, design difficulty , clarity of songs, Showmanship, precision, and also the drum line , flag chore (color guard) The snake is to get off field quickly for next teams band's turn and also for teams to play again 😊 We were also invited to play 3 half time games. 1. Tennessee Volunteers vs Tennessee Commodores In Nashville Tennessee 2. Tennessee Volunteers vs Georgia State in Atlanta Georgia 3. Orange Bowl in Florida
I played clarinet in marching band in high school (back in the 60's! ). It was maybe the most fun I ever had in school but also the most work! The band you were watching was Ohio State University and they are probably the best university marching band in the USA. Almost every university has their own band and during sports season, they will perform during home games. That's where the home team is hosting and their own band plays. Like in that video, Ohio St Univ was playing whoever that other team was at OSU's stadium. Also, the band will play during the game during timeouts and such from their seats from their front row seats. They act as cheerleaders, sort of. They also play a short routine before the game and during halftime. And these univ bands will have a new routine every game. The bands also play at basketball games, too, along with numerous other events. Like I said . . . It's a tremendous amount of work for everybody in the band. But it's also very rewarding. Glad you liked this video. There are other OSU band vids on TH-cam. There are lots of other univ band vids, too, like Texas A&M, Michigan St U, Louisiana (I think), etc. Just Google college marching bands -- there should be a lot of them. They're all good! ❤
My daughter and son in law played in the Alabama Million Dollar Band for Four years. a show at every home game. To be there in person is total immersion.
I have seen the Ohio State marching band at a game! If we weren't at the game, we were outside tailgating. Huge TV screens playing the game. Lots of food and beer!
I was only in my High School marching band, but even we spent an entire month before school started to learn the music and the drill, then once school started we would spend an hour before school plus our band hour (which was always first period) practicing even more. We even came in on weekends before we would leave for competition and do a run through if we had time. Days where we had home football games we would even get a time audit to miss other classes so we could run the show on the actual field. We had a really bad practice field we had to use, didn’t have all the markers and was super uneven but we had to make do.
I was in our high school marching band... I still remember our daily band practices at 6:30 am every weekday morning in order to be able to perform during halftime on Saturday
Ohio State is notorious for their marching band. Love Them! I was in military style competitive marching band & let me tell you... to do this... yes, it takes A LOT of work & dedication. The drill (knowing timing, matching that with music, plus matching it with our coordinates on the field & when we need to hit those coordinates while doing everything else at the same time), is NOT easy. Lol. For shorter people like me doing like a 4 to 5 step or more, you're basically leaping each step or you end up sprinting in time with the music somehow. It's EXHAUSTING. But the practices are also exhausting. We have to do strength & conditioning, & it was heavy on the discipline. I remember I forgot my coordinate book for drill & I had to automatically do 100 push-ups plus any other screw ups our section had during practice would add up. 10 push-ups each time we screwed up & when you have a lot of people in a section that can screw up, trust me those 10 push-ups add up. We run laps, do crazy exercises, and I remember they made us run up and down this giant hill till they said stop & of you question anything or complain you ended up doing more laps. Fittest time of my life. Lol. Set me up for marine corps training though! Like I said, it was military-style so all our commands & everything we did revolved around how the military does it including their own military marching band. But the military themselves will always be the top dogs. 👌😉
The band faces the side for the dignitaries and visiting fans. The back side that sees the formation backward is mainly the seats for students of the home school. The horshoe end is visiting fans and where the band sits. Assigning seating is strategic, to keep fans from both schools from mingling and fights starting. Students will smuggle in alcohol. Band musicians get scholarships just like 5he ball players. You have to have a lot of stamina.
I just went to the Indiana State Fair last week for band day. I watched over 40 high school marching bands compete. The top 15 do a different performance that evening before trophies are handed out. My granddaughter has one more year of college before becoming a band director.
BTW, the band is NOT the Ohio State Marching Band. It is The Ohio State UNIVERSITY Marching Band. Trust me, I lived within 10 miles of this school for 50 + years. They are two different schools. OSU is in Columbus, the capital of Ohio, OU is further south.
Generally the fields have a "home" side and a "visitor" side. The band is the home band and plays to the "home" side. The are amazing to watch. Love marching bands.
You can't even imagine the level of devotion these women and men put into one performance. They practice 6-7 days a week for JUST ONE PERFORMANCE. They take their performance as seriously as most people take food and water. Dude, they literally sacrifice everyday comforts to be able to do this at a level that you feel you need to react to. Compare what THEY did with what YOU did. THEY did it. YOU just watched it.
I was in Marching band in high school and yes it definitely takes a lot of band practice! I still don’t know what our actual formations looked like because on the field you only know where you are meant to be. This was a very cool show!
There are drum and bugle corps that put similar shows on every summer a great one to look up is 1988 “Santa Clara Vanguard” preformed a show with music from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” they changed the ending for the National Championships in Kansas City if you want to see a great marching band performance look this up.
Even in high school band we learned a new show nearly every week. We started band about 3 weeks before school started and had to have all music memorized for all season by the time school actually began. We started school an hour earlier than everyone else and had a few days after school that we had to stay then on one night we had to be there at 6pm and didn’t get out til 9-10
I used to do marching band in school, it’s a lot of fun but a lot of work. You memorize and time everything and it can be really hot or cold. It’s incredibly fun though

Me too class of 1989! Stratford Hall was my freshman dorm. Their basketball team was really good too!
In high school we had one show for the year and I never managed to memorize the entire show by the end. Three songs in a weekend is crazy to me
yeah marching band is difficult and the fact that Ohio state can do so much is insane
I was in a marching band for most of my teenage years. We learned one show a season, starting in the summer.
Ohio State does a different halftime show for every home game, not one per season. However, my high school marching band did the same one all season EXCEPT the rivalry game, they did a "special one", so only two per season for my high school.
i can appreciate the work and rehearsal time that goes into such a performances. TREMENDOUS PROGRAM !!! EVERY WEEK!
The best angle is always toward the home team.
Yes, you are watching from the home side. However, the performance is also on the jumbotron so everyone can enjoy.
Not only have I seen a halftime show, I’ve been in them.
OSU has The Best Damn Band in the Land.😊
Nope, It's The One, The Only, The Truly Incomparable, Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band. Fear the Tree!
I'm a Penn State fan and I even know they are truly the Best. Sorry
@@tahoemike5828Nice twig!
@@tahoemike5828 osu the best damn in the land.. Cleveland is the city…the land is in nickname.I’m from the land.
I did high school marching band and we had to practice so much!!!
You hated it, just admit it. I have had tons of friends who did it and they all hated it. Zero of them have careers marching in a band now. LOL
Buckeye here and I am so proud of them every single time! They do this every home game 😍

Every halftime show is different.
I was in marching band in high school. We practiced often and only home games had us playing.
SO MUCH respect for marching bandmembers’ commitment. Had friends in marching band. They’re on the field sweating at least as much as the footballers.
Even my small high school (less than 200 students grades 9-12) had a marching band that performed every home game half-time (right side up to home team side). I was in that band so never saw our performances from the stands but I loved watching from the stands in college. All of the big colleges had phenomenal marching bands.
I was in a marching band and it is hard as hell to march in formation and play an instrument.
It wasn't the first medal of honor ever, it was the first medal of honor that was ever caught on videotape
You do understand that each person on the field is carrying & using instruments. While marching
Yes I have. They face the home side (as they only perform a half time show at home games) of the stadium. :)
Yes, all games. The amount of practice they do is insane !
I saw Ohio State marching band in person six years ago and it was AMAZING!!
Marching band is.just about a career, SO much time devoted the execution & precision. Yes, so cool!
My goodness!! You go to school and you'll see marching band performances. It's part of school life!
The Michigan State flag, the archrival of Ohio State was taken down by Mario Brothers.
University of Michigan, not Michigan State. Too different schools. If you called a MSU fan a Michigan fan you'd lose your teeth. They hate each other.
@@Ignats75 You passed my test. Thanks for the info. I should have consulted with an Ohio co-worker before I made the comment.
I enjoyed your reaction. Especially at the end . Knowing what was going on when they were snacking writing Ohio was so much fun
I did this for real at Nebraska. Every home game we did one of these. And each was very different than the last one.

Ohio, Michigan, and Notre Dame all have fantastic shows.
6:40 to 8:00 - Legend of Zelda (it was Link's sword as the final object).
Then they went back to Super Mario
You can't even imagine the level of devotion these women and men put into one performance. They practice 6-7 days a week for JUST ONE PERFORMANCE. They take their performance as seriously as most people take food and water. Dude, they literally sacrifice everyday comforts to be able to do this at a level that you feel you need to react to. Compare what THEY did with what YOU did. THEY did it. YOU just watched it.
Okay, chill, yeah it is cool and takes a lot of work, no need to put someone else down.
It isn't like he's from TTUN.
I went to school at The Ohio State University. We used to watch the band practice outside during the week.
not only the marching whats coo is that their playing instruments as well...amazing
There are HUGE marching band competitions in the United States. Some bands from Canada even come down and compete.
Best damn band in the land! OH !
I’ve been to many Ohio State games & my daughter attends there. Half times shows are always amazing !
I adore that you said "what a game" and this is just the half time show ❤ not even the actual game.
Edit- your excitement and enjoyment is contagious!
They use charts with their number and positioning of the formation. The Best Damn Band in the Land!!!!!🎼🎺🥁
I used to do marching band in school, it’s a lot of fun but a lot of work. You memorize and time everything and it can be really hot or cold. It’s incredibly fun though
Omg ayeee im born and raised in cbus where OSU is so the games have always been a part of my life. The band plays every game and we’re known for having one of the best bands in the country. In person its definitely cool to see, ppl dont wanna get up and go bathroom or get food during halftime when osu band plays! This particular performance looks like a tribute piece and those always go hard
OH
I O
All my friends who weren’t IN the marching band went to the halftime games in high school just for the halftime show, and when we threw Superbowl parties we would only watch the halftime show on TV. xD
Every halftime show is different but the skill level of our OSU Band is the best!!!
In high school 9-11th grade i was in marching band we learned one show and performed at half time and did competitions until October. I believe college marching bands learn a new show for every home game. It was a lot of fun.
