Melbourne is the capital of the Australian state of Victoria and is the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. It was the capital of Australia between 1901 and 1927, when it was moved to the planned city of Canberra. Chosen since 2011 as the best city in the world to live in, for its high quality of life and low levels of poverty, it has also been selected as a favorite in places to visit by tourists. In April 2023 it became the most populous city in Australia, with 4,875,400 inhabitants, surpassing Sydney. It is located on the lower course of the Yarra River and the coasts of Port Phillip Bay, to the north and east. The name Melbourne also serves to name the geographical region of Greater Melbourne. Today, the city is an important center of commerce, industry and cultural activity.
