Thanks for your thoughts on these Sony Speakers, been tempted to get a pair for my channel as they get recommended by quite a few audio channels on here. for $30 more its got to be new
I bought the Sony STRDH190 RECEIVER, for $148.00 off Amazon, my vintage2220b Marantz was cutting out on one speaker when I played records or reel to reel tapes. Radio plays fine without cutting out. I really like the Sony for that price, the records and tapes sound good for my small studio apartment, and it has blue tooth to play song off my iPod. all my equipment is used, I would like to get those Sony speakers. Someday I would like a quad Marantz receiver. I bought the 2275 Marantz receiver back in 1974, I'm hook on Marantz.
Bass response will increase if you move them away from the wall. But I get that they're test bench speakers, and space is at a premium. Front ported speakers would be a better choice, but the Sonys sound fine to me (over TH-cam, which obviously has it's limitations).
I watch a lot of TH-cam on these speakers wirelessly into a Sansui 210 and I’m extremely happy. Last night watched Bob Marley and The Wailers at Rainbow concert on TH-cam. So impressed with the sound. I use the cheap 1Mii bluetooth trans|rec which I also feel is great bang for the buck.
Practically every piece of audio equipment I've ever bought has been used too. It's the most affordable and most enjoyable way to put all sorts of great vintage (or more recent) audio equipment together to build a fun and unique system. However, sometimes it pays to buy new while taking advantage of sales as much as possible, of course. :)
I can name the new stuff I've purchased; I think there were about 6 pieces - maybe 7 (first stereo and speakers (2); tape deck; CD changer; Receiver; CD Player; pair of headphones). Everything else has been used (Thrifts, Yard Sales, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, Garbage Picked). The thrill of the hunt is its own reward.
Rear ported speakers generaly speakering sound better if placed out from the walls a bit. Rear directed sound reflected off the wall can enhance the lower frequencies. My choice for that near field application would be front ported. Play around with that. Nice speakers and I enjoy your channel.
I bought a pair of these about a year ago--to supplement my 44-year-old Avid speakers--and they were so fabulous that I simply set them up in place of the Avids. (To be fair, the Avids probably needed work after a long and hard life.) I liked them so much I bought another pair for my bedroom. Great! They were cheap then --$88 a pair--but even at twice that price (which they are now), they would be a great buy.
They will go a bit deeper in the bass and the treble will benefit to after you've played music on them for a bunch of hours. Since loudspeakers have moving parts and these are brand new, it makes sense they need some time to a break in. ;)
I am happy for you. You should build a set of wall mounts shelf for them and get them up off your bench to prevent damage and win back bench space. Older speakers benefit greatly from ferrofluid replacement. You should do a video on it. Takes 30 mins to do a set of tweeters.
Cheapaudio Dude? I'm an early subsciber there, can't believe how quickly he blew up! I haven't heard the Sonys in real life, but I do have some KLH 17s on a Marantz 2265 in my home office. As well as some KLH 6s on a Pioneer SX-838 in the basement as well as some original Advents. Love Henry Kloss. Great stuff. I even have the more recent set of his Cambridge Soundworks Model Sixes also in my office on a Harman Kardon HK3490 recevier (a more modern set up-also has a Yamaha CD changer in the mix).
I have these same speakers. Also by recommendation. Good value for money. Bass is a little lacking though. Move them away from the wall a bit though as the bass ports are on the back.
I bought a pair of these as well for my secondary system and liked them so much I bought another pair. Using them with 2 polk subwoofers and a Cambridge Audio 85 watt receiver. The system sounds great. Can't beat the price of the Sony's for what you get.
"You've definitely seen his (Cheap Audio Man) channel if you're watching this. " Am I really that transparent? 😏Nice speakers, anyway. That amp is gorgeous too!
Originally I used Audio Design 808s (extremely cheap) on my bench, but when I set it up again after a long period of storage I put my Infinity RS9s on the top shelf. Significant improvement there. For the second set, mostly useful with car stereos that have faders, a pair of Minimus 7s is convenient, but I have several others, including Mission MS-50s, that would be better. For protection against DC, use large-value nonpolar capacitors, or a DC-detection circuit with a relay.
WE BOUGHT A COUPLE OF THE SONY CS5'S COUPLE YEARS AGO. THEY'RE NOT FOR THE "MAINS" IN OUR HOME THEATER,...HOWEVER THEY MAKE EXCELLENT (INEXPENSIVE) REAR SURROUNDS.
Nice - I bought a pair on his recommendation as well, about 6 months ago for $80. I wasn’t too impressed, but when I paired it with a subwoofer they sounded awesome! Of course I have a much larger space and my hearing isn’t that great anymore either.
These old stereo receivers are dirt cheap here in Germany. But people found out on ebay they can make money so those vintage receivers are going up in price.
I'm glad you're enjoying your new speakers. As you know, you'll have loads of fun running your favourite music through them and noting any differences. Experimenting with near-field listening is one of my audio activies. There're so many ways to enjoy my speakers that I haven't bought new speakers in 20+ years. Your audio dinner is served: bon appétit! Aloha!
I use them on my desk with my Sansui 210 and they are a a great match. Just like you mentioned in that sound stage sweet spot, they sound bigger than they are. I am not wanting for more.
Have you thought about placing an in-line fuse in-between the amplifier and the speakers? I have installed fuse holders on my speaker connection plates to protect my little bench spendor loudspeakers from mishaps ....just a thought :) love your channel x
I am a big advocate for saving older audio equipment but I always look for newer stuff as well I found a set of ONKYO model D - D2 E speakers just a little ones I bought them from a soldier returning from a tour in Japan and evidently the speakers are only available in Japan you cannot buy them in the United States I think I paid $30 for the set they’re used but they are very new and I was blown away by how much bass they produce they’re only two-way speakers but you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference and this coming from a guy who has a Marantz 2285B and I run them through four Kenwood vintage speakers with 15 inch woofers so they really sound damn good for how small they are I was surprised shocked in fact so some of the newer stuff is pretty good! I enjoy your shows a lot how is the Jaguar coming along and tell the wife I said hello have a great afternoon or evening or morning when you read this if you read this, See you next time!
Audiophile quality isn't really needed for general test equipment anyway... good thing the KLH 17's are being put to good use elsewhere. I'm sure these Sony's are more than adequate for your intended purpose. Sounds like plenty of video time on the bench coming with projects waiting, nice. Enjoy!
I bought japanese made sony bookshelf speakers from a sony micro and mini system ,one set i use for audio the other is for my pc plenty of them on ebay cheap and the Japanese sets are better sounding than the uk ones i also have .
It is nice to see that more repairs are about to hit that new bench, looking forward to them. Are you enjoying driving the XJS, which one is funner to drive the Volvo or the Jaguar?
Jaguar still has some kinks to be worked out. Exhaust has some interference with the frame under load and it turns out the wheel bearings need to be replaced which I did not catch in the subframe rebuilds. Once those are worked out, I'll post a "conclusion" video. However initial impressions are the car is a very nice place to be and it handles well for what it is. It's the first car I've owned where people look and wave at you. To answer your question, right now the Volvo is more fun to drive since I can lean into the throttle! Jaguar I'm anxious to see how much power it has
Problem with the manufacturer's (and retailer's) warranty on your brand-new speakers that you referred to earlier in the video is what you said towards the end... You- "Hey, Sony - one of the woofers has blown on my < year-old speakers" Sony - "Hey, aren't you that guy on TH-cam? Didn't you state that you purchased these intending to use them as *test* speakers, for various amplifiers that you are attempting to* repair yourself?" [*from their POV] You- "Hey, Sony! [complaint about any electronic or material fault]!" Sony-"Aren't you that guy on TH-cam...? But I know you'll be careful.
Whenever I see [SONY] on home audio, I can't help but think of throwaway 90's "all-in-one" systems that were found in nearly every dorm room across the country. Maybe Sony's evolved...... I see a lot of good reviews on these.
@@foobarmaximus3506 Have you ever tried to put yor hand over your mouth and tried to talk? That's what happens to the rear port set against to the wall.

Good to know that the KLH 17s are still in use. Those are great speakers

I have 2 pairs of these and bought a pair for my daughter. Decent little speakers at a very good price.

Recapping old KLH's is a must.
That is a sweet Sansui you have there, wouldn't mind that in my system at all.

For the money I understand those are great speakers. I second trying them moved out farther from the wall so the rear port can breathe.
Try moving them a bit forward if you can. Rear ports need space.

Don't push them back my friend, they are bass reflex tune port to reproduce bass , at least 12 inches from the wall .
I read only good reviews for these speakers, especially in their price range

I lost one of the screw on terminals. Does anyone know if I can still somehow attach the wire on to it?
So we finally have a replacement for Eltax Liberty 3+!
You need a gap between the wall or you cancel out the bass Reflex .
I can’t believe you chose these speakers as your first pair of speakers to every buy new. There are countless better options for cheaper.

Sony hi-fi in 70ies were among the best.
No shortage of videos on these speakers.
This young man hates retail more than I do.
Those are a Mini-Me Version of my Sony SS-U65 Speakers...........
IMO, if you like Brite speakers those are perfect. They lack bass.
"Cheap audio man" what can I say?
impressed
You told there is a port back of the speakers? Don't push the speakers against the wall. It blocks the wenting.
As he already stated and can clearly be seen in the video, they are test speakers for his work bench… he needs them because theyre small…

Nope. Currently $98 on Amazon. That's a very good deal indeed. I'm getting a pair.
