    dear Cecile I am super glad that you mentioned that these are not the actual primary colours. That was what bothered my about the set but I am probably still getting it. I would have loved Schmincke Gouache as obviously they are easy to get here in Germany and have excellent quality. Sadly they do use ox gall though so thats no option for me. Great video! My honest review of these would be: I really like this paint so far. Its highly pigmented. I feel like the colors stayed bright after I brought the painting indoors from plein air painting. This is my experience with it so far. The DS titanium white though is another story. I feel like I never squeeze enough white out and I'm always reaching for more. Other brands I feel like "oh no! that's too much!"

    Great review! I was also less than enthused about their current color selection (no phthalo blue!). I love Holbein's primary cyan/magenta/yellow, but wanted a version that could be easily kept dry in pans for travel.
    I ended up e-mailing Daniel Smith and asked if they were planning on releasing any more gouache colors... and to my surprise, they e-mailed back today and said they were going to release 22+ more near the end of the year. Hopefully adding more colors helps make their gouache a bit more exciting!

    • @CecileYadro

      Let’s see their color selection! and I’m currently making tests with dry gouache in pans for travelling.

    • @centradragon
      @centradragon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CecileYadro Daniel Smith didn't tell me which colors they'd be, but here's to hoping they'll perfectly fill in some of the missing staples their current lineup has.
      Oooh, good luck, and I'm looking forward to your dry gouache test! Really hoping it goes well.
      I'm currently testing a dry palette with my Holbein gouache for an upcoming trip, and glycerin seems to be the silver bullet in getting it to behave *just* well enough to be useable. I stored it upside-down last night (three days post-fill) and didn't notice any awful crumbling or leaking, so I consider that a win!

    • @CecileYadro
      @CecileYadro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glycerin or the painting medium for watercolor?

    • @centradragon
      @centradragon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CecileYadro Just glycerin right now! If I have a chance I'll pick up some watercolor medium or gum arabic and see how that does. Schmincke also sells a gouache paint binder that might work.
      Certain Holbein colors (mostly white) seem to like getting... grainy, for lack of a better term. If I give it a few minutes to soak water, the colors seem to hold their opacity pretty well on paper.

    I am curious if you would ever review Marie's gouache, which is an inexpensive brand of gouache made in China. It is not artists quality, but you did also review Himi gouache which isn't artists quality either... Maybe you can compare those two and see which is the better cheaper option for artists on a budget. My experience with Marie's was... Well, it was my first gouache brand I ever used and I loved it. Then I found your videos and saw that you loved Holbein so I went and bought those which I've been using. I am finding, however, that the Holbein gouache behaves so much differently than Marie's. Marie's probably has less pigment and more binder so I think my struggles with Holbein is simply bc I was already used to how Marie's behaved. I do love that Holbein is so vibrant and I can tell it's good quality. But yes, I would be very interested to hear what you would think of Marie's coming from a more experienced gouache artist. One thing I will note about Marie's is that it is not a true matte finish! More of a satin finish similar to my liquitex acrylics.

    Daniel Smith watercolors are very nice quality, but the produce many mixed colors and you have to root through there big selection to fine the pure colors. Seems like they’re doing the mixtures with gouache. Nice review/demo, thanks.

    I was surprised by the color selection too, would like to see a Phthalo Blue GS (or other cool blue) and Quin Rose and don't understand why they have two bright greens so close in color. But I heard that DS released this first selection of 22 and will be adding another 22 colors to the range. Because of the way their store displays are designed, DS releases in increments of 11.

    I am very much a gouache novice, but unlike watercolor, it's a medium where I am truly happy with just primaries plus black and two whites (zinc and titanium) and as much as I love DS watercolor, this selection did not appeal to me. I think the only thing I would not mind trying in this line is the Buff Titanium ... but I have so many tubes of Holbein and W&N that I have no need for more.

    • @CecileYadro
      @CecileYadro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that, I have a lot of tubes as well, but I should have tried Buff Titanium. I have one in acrylic and I use it a lot, it's a very convenient neutral color.

    What are your opinnion about Lascaux-Gouache? It seems to be a little different, more like in the middle between gouache and tempera. It is not so easy to reactivate with water, it takes a little bit, but it can be reactivate.

    • @CecileYadro
      @CecileYadro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve looked and it’s actually acrylic and not gouache. There is an acrylic binder inside so it’s not meant to be reactivated as for what I can see on their website.

    If I wanted to pay Schmincke prices for my gouache, I'd prefer Schmincke. Even after two price increases in 2022, M Graham is still substantially less than DS,...and there's no way DS has more pigment. The question is why did DS wait so long to get in the gouache market? Maybe DS should have stopped making their oil paint nobody uses and introduced their gouache years ago.

    • @CecileYadro
      @CecileYadro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting point of view, I didn't know their oil paint had little success.

    • @greenbuttskunked

      @@CecileYadro In the US, you can't get Daniel Smith's traditional oil paint from the three big e-tailers now (Blick, Jerry's and Cheap Joe's). But I was wrong to say "nobody" uses it. I do see mention of some using their water miscible oils. My point is that DS has achieved such success with watercolor that introducing a gouache line years ago would have made good business sense. But what do I know, lol?! Thanks for giving, as others stated, an UNBIASED review, Cecile:)
