Wow amazing. So happy to see your engineering skills put to work again. 😄 I fish with a hip pack and have this issue when reeling în a fish and than the fish runs off. Than I'm fighting the net and the rod. Lol I actually laughed when I saw you putting it between your arms or legs because that's what I do. 😄😄 I will definitely give this a try. 👍 Thank you.
Ha! Thank you, Ruben! You definitely have to give this a try and break that grabbing the net with your legs habit! Tight lines to you and I appreciate you watching.
Fantastic system. I love the DIY nature of this and the thoughtfulness. Same spirit behind much of fly tying and experimentation on the stream. You and Dom ( from Troutbitten) are the best in the business at this.

I don’t comment a lot but just know your doing a great thing and inspiring a lot of young guys out there to get into the Euro Nymph game!!
Super nice of you to say...Appreciate you binging! Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad the vids are helping! Tight lines to you and good luck this season.
Hey Cory! Over the years I’ve tried countless pack/net setups. I think I have finally settled on a fishpond cross current chestpack and I attach my net retractor to the loop on the pack and I have a magnet on my wading belt to capture the net.I still need to settle on a rig up for my big net on big water . This video has given me some good direction in that area. Thanks for the video and Tightlines my friend!
Dale-I have a buddy that loves the FP cross current chest pack. They do make some awesome packs. Glad you got some good info out of the video. Tight lines to you as well, my friend!
I’m just loving your videos, great content👌 I tried your micro leader setup. Got the Pezon and Michel line. Finding it difficult in terms being accurate but just started, hopefully time on the water I’ll see an improvement. Looking forward to your next video
Thanks so much, Piscator! Just make sure you are waiting longer on the backcast to make sure it has completely unfolded behind you before you start the forward cast. I would watch the cast unfold-that way you will see it and understand the feel at the same time. Also-makes sure your moves are smooth. Hope this makes sense to you. Good luck and tight lines.
I've gotten tired of my vest and been wanting to switch to a hip pack over a sling or chest, but what to do with the net was the only question I had. I didn't like the idea of sticking it in the spot in the pack because I'd have to take the net out every time I spun the pack back to my front. Thanks again.
I use a similar rigging method for the same Frabill net. The paracord is a better solution to zip ties which eventually break. For those using zip ties, you can file the burr and cap it with a bit of UV resin to avoid the sharp issue, but paracord is a more permanent solution. A side-mount magnet like Corey uses is great for keeping the net positioned where you want it, and the retractor allows you to drop the net when needed.
Cory, thanks for the insight. I went from the Fishpond Fanny pack to a Switchback Pro, the pack has a sliding rail it works on, makes access perfect, and the net slot almost unnoticeable. I do agree on the use of paracord, can’t have enough! Appreciate your tips!
This was so helpful. Have the lumbar pack, I don’t love behind the back carry for the net in the slot, especially because no lanyard option. I’ll be doing what you did here. Awesome idea. Thanks.
Good tip Cory. I have always tethered my net. As for losses, many of my fishing posse have lost nearly as many spendy nets as they have lost fish screwing around with a teather free net. Thanks for sharing. Hope I run into you onstream some day. Best, Bill.
Thanks for the advice. Yesterday I went with a guide dry fly fishing in small streams. Caught so many fish but all little 12-15 inch fish. Browns and bows. But today I went on my own. I tried to repeat what I learned the first day. But instead I had the most amazing day fishing a 2 km stretch dry fly fishing (in Australia) upstream and then euronymphing the same stream downstream. I caught all the 14 inch juveniles on the way up and only caught 3 fish on the way down. The thing is I only had a 5 wt. My 3 wt couldn’t fit in my suitcase. I live in HK. Anyway I caught a 3 inch tiny one, then a 28 inch monster that I believe was about 3.2 kg brownie. And a decent 20 inch rainbow. The big one I believe has been caught many times before and it knew what to do to get released. It fought only a little for a fish that size and then it couldn’t fit in the net but once there it stood still for me to take out the hook and let it go. I am thinking I wish I had done the nymphing on the way up. But the 5 wt is not anywhere near as sensitive as the 3 wt.
Wow-sounds like an awesome day, Marcelino! Amazing fish. The 3wt will definitely do a better job but sounds like you did great with what you had. Appreciate you watching and continued success to you. Tight lines!
Cory, great tip! My first net magnet I ripped apart netting the first brown I caught after 3 months of fishing! Since then I’ve been just tucking it into my wader belt. I’ll try this set up next time Orvis offers free shipping. 😉Tony
Great advice. I use the same net retractor and attach it to the back of my lanyard but find it pulls the lanyard down my back and makes accessing the lanyard difficult and uncomfortable. I will change to your suggestion and attach it to the back of the wader strap. I have a pacemaker and defibrillator now after a cardiac arrest on my last Canadian fishing trip so try not to use magnets as they react with the devices. I'll just have to devise a magnet substitute for the wader belt. Kindest regards from down under in NZ.
Glad it helps, John. When you put it on your wader strap, you won't even know it's there. Happy you are back out there fishing for your beautiful New Zealand trout. Cheers, Mate.
Thanks for talking about the net problem with hip packs. No one ever does. The other issue with placing the net in the pack slot - is that the net gets in the way when you slide the pack to your side or front when trying to access it. I like your solution - BUT, what do you do when you’re wet wading? Ie: no waders to attach the net to ?
Glad it was helpful, Graeme. Totally agree about the net slot. If I am wet-wading, I'll attach the net retractor to my pack. It's not perfect, but sometimes, you have to do whatever works. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Well presented and more or less in line with my thinking. There is one question that I would like to ask: do you use a wading staff and if so what methods do you use to keep it clear of the net. I ask this because I am always using my wading staff in my left hand.
Hey Cory, thanks for sharing the link to this video. I'm going to use this net setup for sure when in waders. Do you do much wet wading. Wonder what your net setup looks like without the waders. cheers!
Sure thing, Taylor. When I wet wade, I have a loop on my wading belt that I will attached my net retractor to. Or, if I bring my waist pack, I attach the retractor to the handle of the pack. Hope this helps.
Cory, I wear a vest and and an older version of a fishpond belt, similar to their Southfork. It seems like I could rig a system like you describe between the vest, waders and belt.....would you agree? This is the first video I've watched of yours....I immediately subscribed!!!! Your presentation style is GREAT!!! Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Bob. And thanks for the sub! You absolutely can rig something like this if you wear a vest. Appreciate the kind words. Tight lines to you!
Released two slobs 19.5 18 on upper Eb Delaware yesterday.. raining now .. but the upper is perfect for night buggers.. that's what I tried again tonight before raining.. anyway the day was tough as usual.. was trying sulfers and olive on 3wt and it's sparse hatching late afternoon .. WB looked good but not for wasting hours.. high 191 bridge .. hopefully tomorrow isn't a wash out upper Eb I give it a go couple days God willing
Hi. Great info. Do you still use this hip pack? If so do you use it with the flybox hanging around your neck that you have in the Minimalist video a month ago?
Hey Geo. I'll use this pack if I need extra gear/rain jacket. But if I don't need it, I just go with my C&F. I still set my net up the same way. I just have my magnet on my wading belt.
Thank you Cory! I've been looking forward to this video. Very helpful. My setup has been close to this. I've never used a net retractor, just a leash. I like the option of a quick release that the retractor offers. And the hockey tape with a loop is fantastic! Thanks again!
Very helpful video brother! I actually just ordered that 18x13 myself. But by the looks of your netting, you may be able to answer a question I can't seem to find the answer to. Do you know where to find a replacement net for this Frabill 18x13, if it were to ever need to be replaced? It looks as though you may have one on yours, if I'm not mistaken.
Thank you. Glad it is helpful. I'm sure your best bet would be the Frabill website. I have the original netting still on mine... it's been on for a long time. Good luck and tight lines to you!
Oh okay, I thought your net was a replacement but I was mistaken. Can't find any replacemtnets for it on the Frabill site, or any other site. Thank you for the quick response though, Goodluck to you as well!
So happy to have just found this as a new hip pack fan! Question... do you wet wade at all with that pack? If yes, since you wouldn't have your high/wader-strap tether point... what do you do?
Glad you found it, Justin! I do wet wade with it. I’ll just take the net retractor and clip it to the handle that’s on top of the pack. It’s not perfect but it works.
@@OldDominionTroutBum perfect... makes total sense. That's what my initial setup is, only I went with the net holster on the left port (where your magnet is) that I slide my handle into, and my gear keeper is hooked to the handle. It works, but as a long time sling wearer I'm used to my net hanging at my left/net hand and the upright net is a little "ehh" to me. Thanks so much for the reply.
I have a working box on a lanyard, so most of my flies are in front of me. When you do swing it around the front of you, just detach the net from your side magnet and let it hang down form your back-that way it is out of the way.
Cory, quick question. I bought the net retractor & magnet. I use a vest & will probably connect the net retractor on a D ring on my vest back or add it to my suspenders & add the magnet to my wader belt as you described . I’m a lefty so I’d be working on the right arm to use my net. Thoughts? Don’t know about you but fishings been pretty slow for the last 4 weeks. Tony
Hey Tony-it will definitely work with the D-ring on your vest and the magnet on your right side of your belt. It will be much easier to grab your net when it is attached right there as opposed to hanging straight down off your back. Weather has been warm one week and cold the next-makes for big fluctuating temps and trout just can't settle in. It will bust out soon!
Great question. I do wet wade…I’ll just clip the retractor to the handle of the pack. It’s not perfect-but it will work for you. Appreciate you watching!
Pete, this is a Golden Trout Lanyard and I attached a C&F box to it (Fulling Mill now makes them). But, I now use a C&F chest box instead of this. I have done a video here: th-cam.com/video/JefEZ_9Pkws/w-d-xo.htmlsi=neoM7vvBqsgPzj6I I still attach my net the same way and put the magnet on my wading belt. Both systems work great.
Cory I finally was able to purchase a C&F design chest box. this one holds 3 tippet spools. problem is either Rio or Orvis spools are too large in diameter to fit in the circles designed in the chest pack. do you have a suggestion for which tippet to purchase. I have one spool of trout hunter that fits
James-C&F is from Japan, so they just make them to hold Trouthunter (which is from Japan). I'll be coming out with a video soon on what I do. But in the meantime...I simply use empty Trouthunter spools. I will wind my tippet (I use Cortland) on to those spools. It is a simple fix. Hope this helps.
It does. I was thinking of making an arbor for my electric drill😊. In the meantime I ordered 4x and 5x Trouthunter. At first glance they are pricey but they are 50m spools
Quick question, when attaching the para cord to the handle, is it just layed against the handle on both sides forming a loop on the end and wrapped with the hockey tape to hold it in place? or it it somehow attached before the tape is applied? Thanks,
Bryan, I’ll use some tape to hold a length of 8-10lb mono on the bottom of the handle towards the basket. Then use the mono and spiral it up to hold the paracord in place (which is laid on both sides of the handle) Tape it at the top. Once in place, tape it nice and tight with the hockey tape. Hope this makes sense.
I found this video very helpful. I have an unused Umpqua waist pack that I simply cannot figure out how to implement it in my workflow. I'm presently using a "technical vest" but it puts my pressure on my back when fully loaded. However, I find using a waist pack is more tedious to use since I have to move it around my torso every time I need to change flies. Is there some secret I'm missing?
Thanks, DJ. If you look in the video-you will see I have a lanyard on. Attached is a C&F chest patch (It's a box). That is my working box. It can hold approx 30 flies. These are the flies that I'll be "working" with that day. I have everything I need right in front of me. Nippers, Hemos, tippet, flies, etc...The only time I go into my pack is for extra flies in case I need some more. I can work out in front of me all day. Hope this helps.
Seth, I just use a simple overhand knot and snug it tight. Then apply a generous amount of super glue to it. It doesn't budge. Appreciate you watching.
Carlos, I don’t use the shoulder strap. I really prefer it without. It doesn’t slip down on me. One reason is I don’t overload it. I really pack it relatively light.
Sometimes I do both, Rich. It just depends. Bigger fish....it may go between the legs so I can get it safely out of the net. There is no right or wrong way. The big thing I see is what people do with the net BEFORE the fish is in it. It would be best if you didn't have the net in your hand until the fish is ready to be scooped. More fish are lost because people are messing around with the net, instead of focusing on fighting it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Walter, I just let my net hang and loosen the pack. But honestly, I like working off the front of me. I have a working box and a lanyard...so, I'm really going into my pack when I have to resupply my working box or want a bite to eat. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
That particular waist pack is waterproof and it does come with a detachable shoulder strap to keep it from sagging when it's fully loaded. I imagine he doesn't carry every fly he owns in it tho lol Also there's velcro on the sides of the pack that allow the hip belt portion to be folded on itself so the shoulder strap can be the sole support. It's a fantastic pack
Philip, Rob's correct, I don't carry a ton with me and I don't use the strap. I really like to be a minimalist out there-so my pack stays rather light. Plus, I use is as a wader belt as well, so I pull it tight where it ends up supporting my back. I've tried everything-chest packs, sling packs, etc...This for me is the most comfortable. Hope this helps. Good luck this season.
Thanks Cory, I happen to have the same waist pack. Any chance we could get a rundown on how you set yours up? Thanks for uploading your videos they have been beyond helpful for me. Tight lines
Great comment and a good video I like your time you have taken to explain and the time with helpful hints. I've tied some of your fly examples nice I can't wait to use them this spring. Great video thanks

@@OldDominionTroutBum do you find the 32” line on the Orvis staff tether too sort or restrictive? The Super Zinger is longer. Curious of your opinion.

You can also weld together paracord by melting the ends! Its very strong. A lighter works well to get bothe sides molten before fusing them.

@@OldDominionTroutBum It absolutely does! Thank you!
What Orvis net retractor is that? How does it hold the weight of the net when hanging?
Hey Craig. It is the one that costs approx $25-$28. I don't even feel the net when it hangs. It is solid and will probably last you a lifetime.
Where on the wader strap do you put the loop? Why not clip retractor right to wader strap?
You put it around the strap on the side that you want it to hang on. The strap is too wide to hang the retractor. Hope this helps.
Corey what happens to the net when you rotate your pack to get inside? Do you release the magnet?
That's exactly right, Thomas. Just release the magnet and let the net hang down.
Any specific knot you find compact and effective w the para cord?
Seth, I just use a simple overhand knot and snug it tight. Then apply a generous amount of super glue to it. It doesn't budge. Appreciate you watching.
Do you use the shoulder strap for your waist pack? If not, do find that it slips down?
Carlos, I don’t use the shoulder strap. I really prefer it without. It doesn’t slip down on me. One reason is I don’t overload it. I really pack it relatively light.
Netting a fish. Do you drop the net after you have the fish in your hand, or try to hold the net between your legs or knees?
Sometimes I do both, Rich. It just depends. Bigger fish....it may go between the legs so I can get it safely out of the net. There is no right or wrong way. The big thing I see is what people do with the net BEFORE the fish is in it. It would be best if you didn't have the net in your hand until the fish is ready to be scooped. More fish are lost because people are messing around with the net, instead of focusing on fighting it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
How do you swing the waist pack around on the stream to access it and get in it..I always struggle unloosening my waist strap to spin it to the front?
Walter, I just let my net hang and loosen the pack. But honestly, I like working off the front of me. I have a working box and a lanyard...so, I'm really going into my pack when I have to resupply my working box or want a bite to eat. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBumI think Cory’s bag has a nice humidor inside with several Ashton’s.
Haha. I’m not going to deny that!
I continue to use zip ties…just singe the burred edges with a lighter which smooths them nicely
That does sounds great, Stephen. Appreciate you watching.
Where do you get the magnets?
These are Fishpond magnets. Thanks for watching.
What net do you use in this video?
I talk about it in the video. It's a Frabill.
What model of Fishpond
It’s the Thunderhead Submersible.
What do you do when you wet wade?
I'll hook the retractor to the handle on the pack. It's not perfect-but it works fine.
Cory, how do you stop that bum bag working down your hips. I have a constant problem with at so consequently I do not use one.
Thanks Cory,
I happen to have the same waist pack. Any chance we could get a rundown on how you set yours up? Thanks for uploading your videos they have been beyond helpful for me.
Tight lines
Dan, I'll be doing my set up soon. Glad the videos have been helpful. Tight lines to you.
What waist pack is that?
It is the Fishpond Thunderhead lumbar pack.
Are you sure yours is not the 17”X 22”
It's most definitely the 18x13.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Do you know the DEPTH of your 13" x 18" net? It looks like they have three depth options (10", 13" and 15").
Awesome videos!!!
Mine is 13”. Appreciate you watching!
Great comment and a good video I like your time you have taken to explain and the time with helpful hints. I've tied some of your fly examples nice I can't wait to use them this spring. Great video thanks
Thanks, Kim. Glad it helps. Good luck with the flies…Spring is right around the corner. Tight lines to you.
