Punjabi is the third official language after English and French in Canada. Lot of punjabis have settled in Canada and really haven't lost love for their mother tongue.
As per the constitution of India there is no National Language of India. After independence, constitution makers had a problem of selecting a national language which can unite a country because there were more than 1600 languages spoken in different parts of the country. At that time Hindi was an option as Hindi was being spoken by 40% of Indians at that time. But what about non hindi speaking states and other documents and books which were inherited by Britishers which were written in English during British raj. So at that time it was decided that along with Hindi,English will also be an official language. But English will be official language only for next 15 years i.e. till 1965.(Article 343) So it means after 1965 Hindi is the only official language in India? No. In 1965, non hindi speaking states specially southern states started protesting against Hindi as national language. So government at that time said that states can choose Hindi, English or the language spoken in their states for all official purposes.(8th Schedule) So now there are 22 languages as official language of India and no National Language. This was all done under 8th schedule in which till now 22 languages are official languages and there is a demand of adding 38 more languages under 8th schedule.

Punjabi is not the languages of sikhs only it is spoken by all the punjabi people of any religion.. in punjab there are only 55 percent sikhs rest are of other religions but they all speak punjabi.

Just a clarification to moazzam... English didn't select these words out of sanskrit. These words are common to the indo europeàn family of languages. Sanskrit and Latin have a lot of words in common. English being a derivative of Latin has words that sound the same as in sanskrit. One more word I can think of is naavgatih which in English is navigation.

Punjabi is the third official language after English and French in Canada. Lot of punjabis have settled in Canada and really haven't lost love for their mother tongue.

As per the constitution of India there is no National Language of India.
After independence, constitution makers had a problem of selecting a national language which can unite a country because there were more than 1600 languages spoken in different parts of the country. At that time Hindi was an option as Hindi was being spoken by 40% of Indians at that time. But what about non hindi speaking states and other documents and books which were inherited by Britishers which were written in English during British raj. So at that time it was decided that along with Hindi,English will also be an official language. But English will be official language only for next 15 years i.e. till 1965.(Article 343)
So it means after 1965 Hindi is the only official language in India?
No.
In 1965, non hindi speaking states specially southern states started protesting against Hindi as national language. So government at that time said that states can choose Hindi, English or the language spoken in their states for all official purposes.(8th Schedule)
So now there are 22 languages as official language of India and no National Language.
This was all done under 8th schedule in which till now 22 languages are official languages and there is a demand of adding 38 more languages under 8th schedule.
Its true that many Indians speak English fluently..High percentage, result of high quality education in India

Punjabi is not the languages of sikhs only it is spoken by all the punjabi people of any religion.. in punjab there are only 55 percent sikhs rest are of other religions but they all speak punjabi.

Just a clarification to moazzam... English didn't select these words out of sanskrit. These words are common to the indo europeàn family of languages. Sanskrit and Latin have a lot of words in common. English being a derivative of Latin has words that sound the same as in sanskrit. One more word I can think of is naavgatih which in English is navigation.
