So nice to see this video. My son went to Leiden University and during the COVID lockdown the temperature dropped so low that the canals froze for the first time in a decade. Everyone ran outside, skates in hand and skated outdoors under the sun until the ice broke apart about a week later. What a glorious experience to see and share in their joy!
as a young fellow in Canada the concept of graceful skating was totally abandoned in the frenetic pursuit of the ice hockey puck. We had "hockey skates" while the females had "figure skates", but never the twain should meet. It would be wonderful to dig out the skates and try this with my partner.
At the very last, the skaters are in color, not black & white like the first ones. And, there are orange plastic cones along the skating path. So this is still practiced by some Dutch people.
That was so beautiful. I wish they still did that when I was young and that there had been enough ice to learn how to skate properly. After the cold winter of 1962-1963 there was not a lot of ice, so I can only skate a little bit. I was a child in those days. I saw a woman from Spakenburg in this movie, which is close to where I live.
I skated on the canals in Friesland when I did my gap year in the Netherlands many years ago. It was magical, but these skaters look almost otherworldly.
@@carolmorton7213 I presented this video because I was also a fanatic skater and liked it a lot but that skating was different than this skating (speed skating or skating tours)
my husband and I met on adult night skating in 1980-81. Adult night so no one under 18 allowed in. We skated to organ music. No skating now, I would break if I fell🙁
I looked at the movie with my wife and we liked it a lot, old fashion but funny. Thanks. But elegant skating is not really the same, that is more a activity of a group
This is a modern video though- there are cars and other vehicles in the background, despite the skaters wearing period costumes. Curious where & when this video was taken! 😊
starting a new fad? for someone who has never skated before and would probably fall and injure oneself I like the idea of being surrounded by a group who can and hold my hand
What fun! I've never seen group skating before. It was delightful to watch.
You see it in old paintings but then you can't see how delicate and elegant it is.
@@ankavoskuilen1725 For many, the book "Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates" comes to mind.

That is what I did in the past
Simply marvelous!
Thank you for sharing! ❤
That was lovely 🥰

How beautiful. Thank you for uploading.
I remember group skating with friends back in Grant Park, in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the '70's. So much fun.
look at another video of elegant skating in 1925 in my youtube canal. That is very different
I'm gonna be in West Allis soon for the World Cup .The star is going to be Jordan Stolz.
@hattiem.7966 Enjoy!
😍 So pretty!
Beautiful.
I have an inelegant video of my family skating in Bavaria last week. 😂

@@sp1704 Same, my Dutch.
That was very enjoyable to watch.
Thank you. That was so beautiful and peaceful to watch 🙏💐💕
Good luck finding that today. But it was lovely.
Wonderful!

I so wish I had grown up where this could have have been done!
Relaxing. That was lovely to watch. Thank you.
That looks so fun! I really wish I could be rhere and join them!
Love it.

This happened before 1900. It is already different in 1925, took at another video of me
My Dad was from Friesland and had some wonderful memories of it! He was very proud.

Beautiful to watch...better as a participant!
It seems fun to join.
National champion ship! I was already puzzled by the different folk costumes. I recognized Spakenburg.
It's an old-fashioned art, like formation ballroom dancing. Today, the closest thing we have to formation dancing is The Rockettes.
The grown-ups would do similar on roller skates on "Adult Skate Night" at the local roller rink in the 1950's in Kansas.
They still did at the Roller Rink in Arlington TX 2001. Made the rest of us kids clear the rink! 😅

That was cool. Pun intended!😂❤
Super inspiring!👌⛸❄🎩
So beautiful
Looks like a lot of fun.
Exquisitely performed, and not one individual tries to steal the spotlight. Unlike today's self-absorbed narcissists. IMO
Was this done in the Netherlands?
Yes
Wow!!❤❤❤❤
Divine
Just watch it in the original 1947 movie, The Bishop's Wife ... Beautiful!!

@@wesaris I've always liked Loretta Young. She just lights up the screen IMO. BTW, there are episodes of her show from the 1950s here on YT.
Wonderfully Beautiful. It makes me smile.
But I bet they played hockey and broom ball.
That is definitely not true , it was another time
Nice video!
Mesmerizing
Back when Holland used to get snow and ice! Not anymore
Beautiful! When was this filmed, and where?
In the Netherlands some say Spakenburg but happened in the whole country in the 19th century
When was this film from? Is it colorized black and white?
Thank you!

I wonder if they are in the Netherlands?
Yes, they are.
Pragtig!
Holland?
The Netherlands, yes. Revised name for Holland.
Amsterdam?
no
Funny, when you wanted the roads to be icy!
