Depends on the vegetable. Most want drainage (for example cocoa peat or chipped bark), and fertiliser (well rotted manure or compost. Carrots want poorer, sandier soil, while courgettes pumpkins and a few other things need as much fertiliser as possible.

Not these. The only way a sprout can seed, is to be planted, grow into a mature plant, then left to "go to seed". There by starting the cycle all over again.
