Why I joined the US Army after finance as a CFA Charterholder

  • Title says it all. I made a post about this in 2017 on Wall Street Oasis, but this is my first time talking about it on TH-cam. I don't normally talk about personal topics on TH-cam so bear with me on delivery because the content is raw. Hopefully I can provide some insight and positive guidance on people who may be considering a similar path. If you enjoyed, CLICK SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE!

Alex, this is a great career switch. The nature of the CFA Charter, particularly the breadth and depth of what you were exposed to during your CFA Program journey, definitely has all it takes for you to effectively use your analytical and leaderships for the benefit of the US army and USA.

Yeah having access to the right network is so crucial. The internet leveled the playing field a little bit, but nothing really replaces in-person connection.

Hey Alex. Is it required to swim during OCS if you plan to become a finance officer?

One more question: Have there been any opportunities to apply your Finance expertise on an ad-hoc basis within your platoon? (helping soldiers with personal finance topics, ROI analysis for projects, etc.)

Yeah we have some mandatory trainings that we call 350-1 training, which covers stuff like safety, equal opportunity, etc., so during one of those training blocks I did a class on the Thrift Savings Plan which is the government version of a 401k.

Was 12A one of your top choices in OCS? You didn't want to branch 36A? ;) Any worthwhile tips for getting near the top of the OML? (besides doing well at everything)
FYI, these and other videos have been super helpful to me personally. I have ~3 years of Finance experience, am a CFA L3 candidate (still sitting next May after 2 2020 cancellations by CFAI...), and am interviewing with the Army Officer Board sometime within the next month for a 2021 OCS slot. Super pumped! Looking for a big-time challenge and REAL leadership opportunity, similar to what you noted here. Stuff I wasn't getting by selecting a proper discount rate and deciding if we should trend NWC to an industry average.
    Anyways, thanks again

No disrespect intended to 36As, but definitely not for me. I wanted to do something more tactical. I didn't need to join the Army to do finance. I'd encourage you to check out some combat arms branches.

Did you decide to enlist or officer route? Even though you made less money was that a factor in your choice to go enlist or officer? I ask because I have a friend who did enlist. I am joining pretty soon and studying for asvab. I am in finance accounting in Chattanooga.

Okay... thank you ford sharing your experience.. actually I don’t know would it be ok or not... but will you be so please to tell more about options of US army..
I’m 21 y. o. In Russia, We have different military system, which forces all men go to army, and I’m going to skip it by some( supposedly existed) medical restrictions, because for me army now equal losing opportunities in my career. In other hand my father was kind of military and I feel good about it I want go there... but later may be at my 27-28, it’s impossible to do it in Russia. So what do you think: do I have a chance to go to US army in 2027?

Best bet is talk to a recruiter. As far as the age, I joined at 29. As far as your citizenship maybe being an issue, that's something a recruiter could help sort out, since honestly I couldn't say.
