My used i5 8GB RAM 250GB M.2 L390 Yoga arrived today, it was so filthy. I cleaned the fan and re-pasted the CPU, the old paste was probably from the factory, it was dry and crusty. Dusted the board as much as humanly possible. Took a toothbrush with isopropyl to the keyboard, got in between the key gaps, so much crud came off. Brushed some more between all the gaps around the trackpad and trackpoint buttons and the gaps around the keyboard frame. Gave the screen and body a good polish, cleaned the ports. Now I wait for my 1TB M.2 and 16GB x2 RAM sticks to arrive. In the meantime, I updated Windows 10 and used Lenovo's update software, got some extra firmware, driver, bios updates, just for fun, since I'll be doing it all over again for the new 1TB M.2 drive. Gonna dual boot Windows 10, maybe 11, still not sure how well 11 runs tablet mode, and Linux, possibly Mint. I had a tiny bit of buyer's remorse with it being in such disgusting shape, but after some much needed TLC, I'm really liking this machine, especially for the $165 in total that I paid. It's a nice companion to my T480s, though, I do wish the L390 keyboard was the same as my T480, it just doesn't have the same snappy feel as the T480s, it feels slightly mushy. It's not a deal breaker, though, since I will be using it in tent mode with my mechanical keyboard most of the time.
Hey, it's holding up pretty well, I replaced the keyboard with a T480s one, which feels much better. It needs a new battery, the current one only holds about a 2 hour charge.@@tempeleng
This is my sweet spot. Upgradable m.2 drive and DDR4 memory, and no 2.5" drive bay. I manage to get one during the 2019 Boxing Day sale in Canada with Core i5, 8 GB memory, 256 GB drive, touchscreen, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader and pen. I upgraded the drive with a 512 GB WD Black and added an extra 8 GB memory module. Total price with my personal upgrades was $960 CAD or $722 USD plus sales tax.
It sounds pretty good as far as color reproduction goes, and I think FHD is plenty for a laptop. The only thing kind of low is the brightness but I use my laptops mostly indoors anyway.
Great value laptop. Today (Black Friday), the i3-8145u model was $530 CAD ($400 USD). For another $240, I got 1TB NVMe SSD and 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz RAM. Should be a solid build to last me years to come.
I love my L390. Ordered it with an i5 and 16 gigs of ram. Fingerprint sensor, and backlit keyboard for 850. Keyboard is amazing, blazing fast, very sturdy, and thin. The screen is perfectly adequate and the overall size makes a great choice to carry.

I bought the L390 Yoga Thinkpad, i5 -8265U, 1080p Touch with backlit keyboard, then upgraded to 32GB RAM + 1TB SSD... It would be the perfect laptop with a slightly bigger battery, still I get 6 to 8 hours of mixed usage. Note: I accidentally dropped it on its side, not a scratch! Close, but no cigar. No option for a dedicated GPU means no sale. I've got the Thinkpad Yoga 14 20FY (the one which strangely was only sold at Best Buy) with a 940m, and that little dGPU made a huge amount of difference in what I could do with the laptop. Opened it up for light gaming and GPU acceleration for more demanding productivity apps. Really disappointed that none of the current Yogas have an option for a dGPU, out of all the 2-in-1s I've used I liked Lenovo's design the best with the trackpoint and the ability to store and charge the stylus in the PC (plus Lenovo's keyboards are always good except for the ctrl key being in the wrong place). What I would really like to see is a Yoga version of the Thinkpad X1 Extreme. It's already got the stylus support on the screen, all they need to do now is add the Yoga hinges.
just got this bad boy in my position, initially fell for the 270 series at $400 and i tell ya, that thing came with the 6th gen processor, TIN display, no Fingerprint reader, no back-lit keyboard, horrible track-pad and began lagging shortly after the initial setup. sent it back and the L390 is light years ahead for the roughly $300 more you pay (at sale price), the 8th gen CPU is still very fast, the upgradable ram slot is something that missing even from the X390 series, touch screen is very sensitive, and the trackpad is indeed "very mac-like", the 360 rotational hinge is very stiff and feels like it was built to last, the magnesium-aluminum lid inspires confidence in the device to be used as intended and keeping the screen safe, the keyboard is very tactile and the backlit function is a great attribute, and most importantly the garaged pen is perfect for those of you with occasional need of an stylus (i have heard multiple complaints about the pen being too small and i have to say this is not my experience) i am comfortable drawing or taking notes with the galaxy note stylus and this is pen is in fact much bigger and houses comfortably in the device, i have also heard complaints about the bezels being too large, a and this is not my impression at all, specially if you intend on using the device in tablet mode, the roughly 1cm bezels allow for a better grip/palm rest from any side while not being overwhelmingly huge (minor differences that are noticeable when comparing 100's of devices but not really noticeable or bothersome in person), all and all this is one well rounded machine and i highly recommend it.

On the strength of this video I bought the L390 Yoga in the UK, mine has the the core i7 8th gen chip, it's an excellent machine. Mine came with 8 gigs of RAM but I know I can upgrade this. Thanks!
If it wasnt for Lenovo having built the reputation for having 'budget laptops' worldwide, Thinkpad's would be recognised by a far bigger audience as the ultimate notebook. When i was on the market for a windows laptop and tried to find something with the same solid build quality as a macbook i almost got fooled by the popular 'go-to' Zenbook and Dell XPS machines that are positioned as ultimate lightweight business laptops. But my intuition said they just didnt feel right and i kept on looking for something better. When it comes to build quality and solid performance those laptops are nothing compared to my Thinkpad Carbon X1. However, i happen to like the retro-black style of the thinkpads but i can understand this doesnt appeal to everyone. If only Lenovo would have positioned the Thinkpad brand more stand-alone/not strongly associated with the Lenovo brand and they would come out with 'special editions' of the Thinkpads that sported different colors and styles things could have been different. But probably that wasnt part of the agreement they made with IBM. And maybe its actually a good thing Thinkpad's are not on the wishlist of my hipster entrepreneur friends. Hopefully Thinkpad's have enough traction and marketshare to remain interesting for Lenovo to continue the line.
They are the best as far as actually offering decent selection of ports to connect everything, it seems most laptops offer fewer and fewer connections such as Apple as one example.
Only slowly starting? Thinkpads have always been really good, unless you mainly use your Laptop for gaming. Especially the keyboard is awesome. If you have the option try typing on a thinkpad keyboard. Ever since I did all other Keyboards seem kinda meh. You however may wanna look into refurbished older models. They are still great and cheap at this point.
Lisa, unless I'm mistaken ( I'd be very glad in this case ), they have not released any model with power bridge or swappable battery this year, T490 has only a single internal battery. I'd really love for them to just keep a single persistent model that retains this distinct and useful feature - similar to how the old MBA ran for several years.
The thermals are interesting. I have an xps 13 and I am in a warm room that is regularly over 75 degree during the summer. I have found that the machine regularly hit 100 C according to to Core temp. I have noticed that the machine goes through a restart when it comes out of sleep mode. I think it is shutting down during heat while in sleep mode and hten cant correctly come back out of sleep mode without restarting. So I would recommend you spend time testing this feature on the L390. I think some BIOS updates that Dell made recently have also contributed to this issue.
I'm just a personal home user, not a business one, but I still want one of these. I actually dig the design, and the durability and upgradeability is great. I can see getting it and just having it last me years. Looking to do casual web browsing, media consumption, some FL Studio beats, very light/legacy gaming or just streaming my Xbox One to it, and maybe a bit of digital drawing if the AES pen works enough for me. Do you know if any art programs are somehow able to compensate for the jittery lines at all?

Thank you very much for posting this review. Would you guys do a review. Of the Lenovo Thinkpad W500. I have one myself right now. I’m looking at upgrading it. Changing out the CPU, & the Ram. Thank you very much for posting this video.
They no longer make Thinkpad W-series laptops and haven't for a few years. The workstation models are the Thinkpad P-series (P52, P52s, P72, & P1). I think she has reviewed all of those...if not the latest versions (P_2 models), then she has reviewed the P_1 versions from 2017 that are identical except that the P_2 versions have newer processors and the available configurations may be a little better. The Thinkpad P1 is identical to the Thinkpad X1 Extreme except that the graphics are different: Nvidia Quadro graphics in P1, Nvidia GeForce graphics in X1 Extreme. Quadro graphics are better where high precision is needed (like with CAD software) over speed of rendering, while GeForce graphics render frames faster (better for gaming, video editing, and software that utilizes GPU acceleration) but performs slower than Quadro graphics when it comes to high-precision CAD rendering. The P52s has a much less powerful processor than the other ones, even though the name (i5, i7) may be the same.
Do we know if it has thunderbolt 3 support? I thought I saw a little lightnign bold icon by one of the USB C ports, but nothing said about it...was the icon just to indicate which one should be used for charging?
Still use and love my Thinkpad yoga 12. Unfortunately I need to upgrade for my workload. i5 5thgen and 8 gb RAM barely gets me by. This will make an excellent upgrade while keeping everything I love about mine.
Thanks for the review, cannot understand why manufacturers don't sale in almost 2020 thunderbolt 3 as standard? And as for hadmi why not 2.0 which allow 4k 60hz... Make choosing laptop very hard to pick... Glad that my 480s at least have 1 thunderbolt 3.0 so I have all I need ...
I know this was reviewed a while ago, but I have a question. I jest got my laptop, and it seams to be running a little hot, and I was wondering if you had the same problem. Looking at cupid, my cpu goes up to 90c.
If it's meant (mainly) for schools, they could've put in a bit higher capacity battery. Btw. it's a dead ringer for the TP Yoga 260 from a couple of years ago (which is only a bit smaller, 12.5").
I have an X510U, it comes with an extremely slow HDD (60 rpm or so), but it has an extra M.2 port for an SSD that makes it so much faster and is basically a necessity because the HDD is way too slow. The ram is upgradeable, no backlit keyboard except for the power button and is kinda annoying, the battery health thing is super nice but sometimes the battery lasts really long and others not so much. And that's about it, wouldn't have regretted my purchase if I didn't end up needing a quad core later. Otherwise it's pretty alright if you're willing to buy an SSD for it

I believe that's to indicate charging. According to Lenovo it's not Thunderbolt 3, which isn't surprising in this price bracket.
Another great review. Thanks
My Lenovo think pad l390 has a black screen and I don’t know how to fix it, can you help me?
i’m looking for a new laptop, is this good laptop?
The text of the L390 review on your web site is for a Sony VAIO laptop, not the Lenovo L390 Yoga.
Still use and love my Thinkpad yoga 12. Unfortunately I need to upgrade for my workload. i5 5thgen and 8 gb RAM barely gets me by. This will make an excellent upgrade while keeping everything I love about mine.
Thank you for this review.
which is better the l390 or the latitude 7300 ??
Hey can i know the Pen Model for L390 yoga? SD60M..... ?
Seems like it would be a great laptop for school students.
I doubt anyone will answer my question but is this compatible with a SIM card?
Thanks for the review! Where do you get you T-shirts?
When are you going to review the T490(s) ?
So guys i got mine yesterday and I'm wondering... Can i upgrade the ssd to 1tb?
I like it the price is right the bezels are really the only turn off thanks Lisa....
aesthetically, yes.. But the bezels are actually useful when flipping as no accidental clicks happen
If I bought this this for $250 what should I check for?
I feel like I bought a fake or stolen one just because of the price. Bought on Letgo.
I am just a bit annoyed with the position of Fn and Ctrl key, most of other keyboard were the opposite.
It makes me harder to do Ctrl key shortcut.
Please,
How to boot usb from Lenovo L390?
Can i prefer it to macbookair 13 please tell me
right on the money. thanks ma'am!!!
I wonder when or if these will be updated with the 9th gen processors, I'm waiting to find a good offering with a 9th gen that I can afford.
Can it operate without a battery?
My favorite lenovo laptop
How are the speakers?
Is the video slowed down or am I crazy?
Thunderbolt 3 port? If so, how many lanes?
Seriously,
where can I buy a t shirt like that...
I jest got my laptop, and it seams to be running a little hot, and I was wondering
if you had the same problem. Looking at cupid, my cpu goes up to 90c.
I like your T-Shirt! And your Videos. thumbs up.
excellent review / looking lappy
If it's meant (mainly) for schools, they could've put in a bit higher capacity battery. Btw. it's a dead ringer for the TP Yoga 260 from a couple of years ago (which is only a bit smaller, 12.5").
Does it have lift and lock keyboard.
still waiting on the L380 Thinkpad yoga review
Can the storage be upgraded with a m.2 sata ssd
Great review, does in support LTE
I don't think so. Looking on the sight now and it mentions nothing of LTE support.
Your age inspires me! Thanks.
What Wi-Fi generation is this pc?😊
YOGA FLAME!
Still waiting for your review of Lenovo Thinkpad P52.
please review Asus vivobook S530 or X510 laptop
I have an X510U, it comes with an extremely slow HDD (60 rpm or so), but it has an extra M.2 port for an SSD that makes it so much faster and is basically a necessity because the HDD is way too slow. The ram is upgradeable, no backlit keyboard except for the power button and is kinda annoying, the battery health thing is super nice but sometimes the battery lasts really long and others not so much. And that's about it, wouldn't have regretted my purchase if I didn't end up needing a quad core later. Otherwise it's pretty alright if you're willing to buy an SSD for it
