    I was expecting Paul Booth to pop up and say something like
    "so back in the eighties, i was helping a friend rob a grave and then he asked me to tattoo his face right there and then..."
    **while staring at the floor like he's trying not to reveal too much**

      Pauth Booths a fuckin weirdo freak. Yeah it’s fine enjoying dark stuff and that, even him collecting fetuses and shit. But robbing graves and wanting to collect a human head is just scummy as fuck.

      @@smudgy264 You'd be weirded out than with how many "scummy" people there are that are A & P professors and medical professionals who collect human remain specimens. BTW, Paul Booth never grave robbed. Someone tried giving him a decomposing skull. I also find it funny that fetus specimens are OK, but a head is where you draw the line lol

    Finally managed to find an apprenticeship after knockdowns and rejection. The rejection was mostly due to places already having apprenticeships and I got some good encouragement and advice from those places too. Never give up if it's what you want to do! I'm only a month into mine and yes I clean/take calls/make copious amounts of tea/coffee for free but the knowledge exchange is worth it. My studio also only requires me to be there part of the week so I can find myself a part time job (as I left my full time one to pursue this) and they're willing to work around me. As long as you have some mutual respect and an understanding with the people who are to be mentoring you, apprenticeships are wholly worth the sacrifice. Yes it sucks not being paid to do these jobs but they're so menial it honestly doesn't bother me. However, I'm in the UK so it may work differently over here.

    • @xejune

      It seems that most tattoo artists, especially ones working alone, are very much willing to give advice on how to get an apprenticeship if they don't have a spot for you. I did work experience in a tattoo parlour for a week where I just drew stuff, but to even get that work exp I had to call them like 4 times and email them excessively because they were the only parlour who even bothered to take my CV (I handed my cv into 10 parlours I think). • @chris-andrebrissett5208
      @chris-andrebrissett5208 5 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      It is. Some artist are more on the conservative side and would rather play hard to get in away since they dont want to pick a poser as an apprentice and spread secrets about tattooing to someone who is not dedicated or because that apprentice will compete with their shop in the future. I do not blame them for this, in my opinion it should be hard just to get rid of all the half ass people who just want money out of tattooing. The people who are the most hungry for it usually get it. For me, I had to prove myself but it started from me just hanging out at the shop, then helping out with cleaning up, and eventually I started learning more when my artist realized my drive to learn the art and develop. So in the end In the end, dont get scared about tge difficulty in obtaining one if you plan on going into this. Just have the drive and walk into shops and hang out a little😉sorry if this was long though.

    • @llamadrama2288
      @llamadrama2288 5 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I had to hang around the shop and my mentor for a whole year doing apprentice things before I even got signed off on my apprentice license to start taking clients. Depends on the shop and the artist mentoring. Some artists will dick you around for the free labor or try to burn holes in your pockets so you can’t keep up with your everyday bills . Others will actually be interested in apprenticing you and see you as a valuable addition to their shop. Other than that why should getting an apprenticeship be easy? It’s not owed to anyone applying just like any college graduate is not guaranteed or owed a high paying job right out of college.

    • @pushinsince9339
      @pushinsince9339 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Cause if it was easy, then almost everyone would be tattooing, a true tattoo artist only want those who truly want it and sometimes that means you have to go through 100 no's before they finally say yes, being consistent and persistent shows that you really want it.

    As someone who went through the process of an apprenticeship... I can relate a lot. I also got a contract in the beginning, however, it was a contract with no legal standing.
    My boss was a dude who thought opening up a tattoo parlour would be a way to earn easy money. Basically, he didn't know shit about tattooing and wanted to profit of other people's work.
    I had to work six days a week at the shop, clean shit for the artists. I was not allowed to leave their sides during the day and draw in my free time to present shit to a boss who doesn't know about drawing either.
    During my apprenticeship, I was yelled at daily, forced to tattoo people in shitty conditions and do tattoos that were too advanced for my level because my boss wanted the money. Additionally, I spend multiple months without anyone to teach me and my mentors rapidly changed. No one really was motivated to teach me shit, so I was still self taught in the end. I was sexually molested by the men who taught me, I was bullied, insulted and my hard work was ignored. All while paying a dude lots of money who didn't know shit.
    I'm glad that I was able to get an apprenticeship nevertheless. It's hard to get into the buisness and I would rather go through the same shit again than not be able to tattoo.
    I wouldn't agree that apprenticeships nowadays are so much easier. I just think that more people get lucky because - let's be honest - you wouldn't want to put someone through this kind of shit if you had to yourself. And I know hardly any people who got lucky. Many people I know were promised apprenticeships only because the studios wanted someone to clean for free. They didn't learn shit.

    I think some shops use apprenticeships to "humble" artists first and foremost.. build trust first with an industry that historically has been a selective/secretive group for many decades not willing to share their lessons and tips with just anyone. That has changed with internet forums/videos/etc so now some of the biggest aspects of an apprenticeship is to teach industry standards like safety, equipment, health/business practices, and of course how to send a needle 1mm-2mm into skin correctly. There is a tattooer that approached it like this: tattooing isn't rocket science but the prerequisite should always be to draw, then draw some more, then keep drawing ... way before a machine ever goes into your hand.

    Well shit no wonder there are so many scratchers.
    It sounds like the industry cares nothing about their employees. People shit on Amazon but these guys run all over their people. But it’s okay because “no pain no gain” and “sacrifice.”
    And Apprenticeships sound like a shitshow. From what it sounds like they make you take calls, clean the store, etc. ya know, shit that they legally have to pay you for based on labor laws. If you’re gone and the artists have to do fewer tattoos to handle phone calls, they’re breaking the law.

    • @chuckmo4874
      @chuckmo4874 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Chris -Andre exchanging knowledge is fine. But no company gets a free pass to break labor laws. If an apprentice is doing work like answering phones or cleaning the store on the regular they’re legally required to be paid.
      Tattoo shops shouldn’t be granted the right to exploit people and ignore labor laws while other industries can’t.
      Not to mention it sounds like there’s complicity in allowing workplace harassment and exploitation in general.

    I'm big into drawing and making art in general and where I go to get piercings I was offered an apprenticeship for when I turned 18. Unfortunately, in the sense of I can't accept, I am graduating at 17 and leaving my state for college. I still want to tattoo but with plans to attend MIT and then Med school, it would be hard. I would love to tattoo, but I'm debating if I want to make a living off of art. I feel like if I looked at it in terms of paychecks and bills I would begin to resent it

    sooooo.... how does one find an apprenticeship without just signing up to be an unpaid maid that learns nothing and might even get your money stolen from you? with the rate i hear about apprenticeships being shitty vs being good it makes me wonder how there are any tattoo artists and they all dont just die off from not teaching anyone anything and using their apprentices like dogs. this cant be true because there are tattoo artists but theres really no justifying such an abusive and toxic workplace, theres a difference between paying your dues and learning vs being there so often you cant even have a job to keep yourself housed and fed and then not even learning anything besides how to clean. seems like its unavoidable to get an apprenticeship without being hazed and treated like shit for years. not to mention needing someone paying your bills for you. what even is this industry? make it make sense. i get this is a horror stories video but the ones that arent labeled horror story seem about the same. i have no problem working hard and being motivated, i dont care if i have to scrub toilets or floors, but who would willingly sign up to getting treated like a beast? if no one tolerated the behavior they would either have to shape up their shitty egotistical methods or die out. where are these mystical magical shops that dont trick people into thinking employer/mentor abuse is the same as "paying your dues?"
