As a follow up to the question from dry-dock 180 about building battleship guns and armour today, what do you think is the largest WW2 style gun armed warship (not carriers or subs) we could build today relatively quickly by using existing facilities? For example we can’t make 16” guns and foot thick armour but how about 6 or 8 inch guns and cruiser level armour?
Picture of HMS Hood shows an RAF like Randall like on top of "A" Turret, what is it's meaning, was it a hold over as her time as the pride of the Royal Navy?
At 22 seconds in your intro,I just noticed it looks like the firing of the gun broke something in the turret and something comes out. Do you know what happened to cause this/what is happening?
Is it safe to say that WW1 Dreadnoughts were more stable than a WW2 Battleship? Fast battleships like KGV, and Iowa have alot more weight higher up in the ship thanks to things like radar suites, AA guns, and just more superstructure. How did World war 1 ships deal with stability once re-fit in the inter-war period ( Nagato, Revenge, and QE classes)
It would be nice to see a video on US Navy's Charles Adams Class destroyer ships. World's first guided missile destroyers.
The spotting towers were meant to smoke, and therefor preserve sailors for future use, should recruitment difficulties arise.

he Bellophion class was deigned to preserve sailors who specialized job funcitons while the ship was in reverse.
No lad was seen as a true lookout unless he was properly kippered.

Yet as a layout, it's quite similar to the American dreadnoughts of the interwar period such as the Nevadas and Pennsylvanias.

The Napoleonic Bellerophon is a worthy subject for a video. She "dogged" Napoleon for 20 years and it was on her that he surrendered after Waterloo. She ended up as the prison hulk Captivity, a rather ignominious end to a ship with a proud history.
The Book “billy ruffian” (the crews nickname for the ship) is a great read highlighting this ships story
It's really cool to see in this class of warship the transition from iron clad ships to the modern battleship. Absolutely fascinating!
How fortunate it is, to have such individuals staunchly entrenched in decision making. Beings blessed with intelligence so bold, benevolent, superior, and visionary that thankfully, they provide for a joyous barbecuing of lookouts across the board, at all times.

That photo (6:55) of the HMS Bellerophon in harbor is startling as it shows Britain's most modern warship with a sailing ship that would have seen fighting 1815! The Bellerophon is also being pulled by a side wheeler tug! What a study in contrasts!

Well West Germany also declined Turkey's offer to send Yavuz/Goeben back for preservation a museum. Which is really unfortunate since she was the only battlecruiser left in the world, along with the only German-made capital ship.

@@greenseaships It's not a random people that are supposed to build museums, even if it does happen and there are countless people donating to create various museums across the world. It's a job of the state.

Apparently it’s from the Battle of Trafalgar vessel.
Really? I'm 5 mins from Williamstown. I know there's an anchor in Southbank on the Yarra but don't know what it's from. Seems I need to pay more attention to big metal bits strewn around Melbourne....

There's a great book about the 74 gun Bellopheron, called The Billy Ruffon.
Well if they had gotten the fusion design triples may have been a thing in the RN on later designs.
9guns in 3 triples QEs sound rather fun
It would give them more guns, by one but still. Though, imagine the QE with all triples. Now that, that makes me happy.
@@johngrimlock5727 well a 12 gun QE would be a fearsome opponent to be sure.
Only downer I see is to have that armament you are either going to have to make it huge and expensive if you want to keep the speed or sacrifice speed if you don't want to make it huge and expensive.
If the British had 5 12 15" QEs possibly with a bigger displacement than Hood I don't think 35k is going to be the treaty limit.

Maybe having triples would give them an excuse to use the 14"s (I know they preferred the 15s but hypothetically), perhaps to save at least a little weight while still maximizing firepower. Then the ship would only have to be marginally bigger to make up the speed? Of course, then I guess you would have to lengthen the armor to cover a larger ship, or sacrifice some of it for weight too. I'm not a naval architect so that could all be rubbish for all I know.
@@johngrimlock5727 well if you went down to 14" you would probably be easier looking at hot much extra length and power to get a US standard up to QE speed since that's essentially what you are doing.
@@johngrimlock5727 1 more gun while having 1 fewer barbette and turret. Meaning less space is taken up by the armament and less space needs to be inside the citadel. The weight savings could've resulted in a faster QE.
Though a 3x3 QE wouldn't look as good as the 4x2.
Fun facts : The ultimate Admiral of the web, Lors Drachinifel, has at his disposal more than 3 times the number of men engaged during the battle of Jutland. ... We are all eager to see the first launch of his fleet to join in! ;)
Interesting fact but the ones you missed was that they were younger, fitter and better trained then we are. So I think the Germans can sleep easy tonight.

@@bigblue6917 I'm not so sure about that. We might drink all their beer. It'd be like trying to push 300,000 out-of-shape walruses back into the sea... except we're beached in their living rooms watching a six week long Drydock episode and cursing Admiral Beatty.
@@nichtvorhanden5928 correct, in fact quite a few viewers are Germans not to mention that also English speaking Italians like me not to mention from other countries are watching this very interesting series of videos if they are interested in battleships!
@MusicMaster1987 thanks but I have been lucky because my late Italian father has married a pretty Swedish girl and together with my sister we went to live in Manhattan for at least 10 years. Knowing some languages and much travelling is really good for your mind!
Using Ultimate Admirals as a visual aid is very helpful.
Thank you! The pictures are really usefull as they show us how much the smoke was a real problem at the time (the picture were she fires... between the funnels and the guns, the ship just creates her own smoke screen... not a welcomed one but...). Another point is the height of the masts. With what I suppose to be communication means (sorry not native english speaker) in french TSF for Telegraphe Sans Fil, I add the idea that another spare has been added to gain some distance for the messages.
About the two masts problem, living in Paris and so a huge fan of the floating hostels, may I suggest to build an Eiffel tower, so we may have two mast at bottom, a high single mast and your communication means at the top! Such an elegant solution... 😇😁😂

Although i must say that seeing Drach kitted out in a Nelsonian era Royal Navy Admirals uniform as the background photo or even lip syncing would be perfect.
Gilbert and Sullivan's music is always catchy, and your viewers will be humming the tune all day.
If anyone gets the lyrics everyone can send in versions for an edit that will have all, his viewers singing in an angelic sounding(or more likley deranged and demonic) Choir.

Always enjoy you ship videos, which are info based, instead of personality driven. As WWI saw the greatest increase in Worldwide Naval strengths....it is enjoyable to watch something besides docs on Dreadnought, and the Explosion classes of Battlecruisers....(with the exception of Repulse, they seemed to share that fate.)
Repulse did sink, though. Renown made it through both World Wars.

I wish they would have an operational level implemented as well at some point. Building ships and fighting tactical battles are fun, but the recon, task force deployment is somewhat left aside at the moment, unfortunately.

Still looking for a post on USS Mississippi BB-23 and USS Idaho BB-24. Their history makes the Bellerophon class look good.

The second Mast could still be very usefull, if the Crew spends it's time with Fishing (arguably less stressfull then Gun Duels).
I know that Jellicoe's stress levels would have been much reduced if those lookouts used Beatty for bait...

Love the use of UAD to show the gun layouts
Word to the wise, either hunting ducks, elephants, or battleships, a big gun is worthless if you miss, with hunting Lions, Tigers, Bears, or Water Buffalo, it can be fatal.
The British ships were doing good enough at hitting their targets, but the ammunition was defective. It exploded on impact instead of penetrating.
Warships and top gear. Now THATS what I call informative.
Has a video been created covering anti-torpedo defenses such as the angled curtains on the sides of ships?

NGL I feel like a lot of the people involved in the design and development of RN battleships during that era from Fisher on down could be described as 'Clarkson-esque', so spot-on meme usage there. Also, I still really want to see someone do a comedic biopic of Admiral Fisher's life with Clarkson playing Fisher, naturally.

Never understood why Dreadnought wasn't incorporated into the Grandfleet. It seemed to be wasted.

@@malcolmtaylor518 What I have read was that Dreadnought was moved so that the weaker predreadnought fleet would have one first class unit to back it up if it were overmatched.
I don't know if that would have been a good idea or not, because back then they just sailed in lines, but that was the reasoning.
I'm pretty sure Dreadnought would've sailed with the Grand Fleet at Jutland if she'd been available, but she was under refit at the time.

What are those things running diagonally across the hull? I've seen them on other ships but am unsure what they are
Torpedo net booms, when at anchor they get swung out and Torpedo nets are hung from them.
They're struts for torpedo nets. They extend away from the ship with a net attached to hopefully catch any torpedoes heading for the ship.

If this was three days ago I would not have understand the memes here in the US. However, someone told my wife about Clarkson's Farm and I looked him up to see who was making her laugh like a silly school girl. What are those angled structures on the sides of the hull? I’ve noticed them on other battle cruisers, like the Kongos, as well.
