Thanks for this. Michael Giles, totally underrated! Their debut album is mind blowing and his performance on it makes it one of the greatest drumming albums in rock ever! A shame more people don't talk about/mention him. I don't know how much work this involves but I wish you could do the whole album. Thanks again!
MIke Giles: The Court of the Crimson King. Wake of Poseidon. McDonald & Giles. Progress. I've been playing drums now since I was 12, born in 1951. I played in bands for years through high school and many years later. The biggest lesson I learned from Michael after my "Chops" years was: There's space between notes, and I did not have to fill them all. That was a big one. Mike absolutely changed my life as a drummer/musician, and to this day, my all time favorite album is McDonald & Giles. Have a happy New year Alex!
I learned about as much trying to imitate MG as any drummer around. Kinda like the percussion definition of Progressive. His playing is brilliant to me.
Stunning. I for one had no idea. Now how come Ian Wallace {no disrespect, great drummer} went on to find all the work and Michael Giles's drumming career languished?
I ran into Ian at PASIC (Percussive Arts Society's International Convention) early 2000's and talked about the shows I caught at the Academy of Music in NY. Opener was Yes, Procol Harem, then Crimson. He played left handed drumset that had each drum painted a different outdoor scene. Very beautiful set. Great drummer, lovely man, and took the time to talk about his playing and career which before I wrote this to you looked him up again as it's been a few years. He played with everybody. Have a great New Year Stephen!
Just the way it is. I like Giles better. Met Wallace in 04 with the touring band of McDonald, Peter Giles, Mel Collins Was really good but he nowhere near Giles
"As for Michael Giles, he was a phenomenal drummer. No rock drummer could touch him in 69." - Robert Fripp
Michael Giles, totally underrated!
He is one of the best drummers in the world
INNOVATOR

Pure gold
Isolated, this just shows how incredible and innovative Giles is. Thanks to whoever did this.
