E chord played in a higher register on piano is a fresh, sunny morning in spring.
Eb is a beautiful dense old forest in summer.
    Yes, please mix your instruments!
I play guitar stuff on piano and vice versa. That helps memorizing. I get the song in my head and can think about it, seeing the chords, harmonic relations, melody and possible soloing. Uh uh I am not a musical genius and this process works, if at all, not flawless. But helps me a lot.
It's like a downhill slalom ski-pro knowing the twists and turns of the piste so he can run the race mentally.

So weird, I was just playing My Ideal right before this vid! It was the standard that got me really into jazz. I transcribed the Chet Baker version from piano to guitar. Eb and Db are such a nice change of pace on guitar. Love your emphasis on spending time with the notes and not rushing.
I used to think that 12-tet meant each key wasn't unique, but that completely ignores the emotional differences we perceive on different registers/pitches on guitar (and any other instrument). I recently learned Girl From Ipanema, and the low register of Db6/Ab in the Getz/Gilberto version hits so smooth

I just started piano a week and a half ago. Fiddled around and “discovered” the black keys are pentatonics… with the minor in Eb and Major in Gb/F#. With a few tritones and minor 3rds I was able to improvise right away… just on the black keys… it was surprising!
Anyhow… not guitar related, but still Eb.

The Gb/F# major is indeed the easiest key to improvise on piano

All my favorite guitarists are all playing Eb tuning: Yngwie, Slash and Nuno. It sounds center and intact indeed. It sounds very near and raw.

Love the lessons and your tone! Can you comment on the muting you have on the guitar? Leather strap around headstock and over nut, foam under bridge and cork covering sound hole?

I have 4 Gibsons for jazz tuned to E AND a Strat tuned to Eb for neo soul because that’s what Jimi did and he obviously knew how to make a guitar sing. Also, in regular tuning, Eb is just another way to access C-, so it does pay to get conversant in this key.

I feel like C major is the most familiar key to most people's ears. C major holds the major chords of C, F, and G. The key of Eb to me has an interesting sound compared to C major because it holds C, F, and G as minor chords instead of major. So an interesting tension can be created by switching between C and Eb and changing the majors to minors and back and fourth. To put this another way, if one takes the third of a scale and plays that as a major scale, they can create this phenomenon. Additionally, playing the sixth of the key as a major scale will toggle the minor chords into major chords such that A, D, and E minor chords from the key of C major will become A, D, and E major chords in the key of A major. Cheers!

Japanese Aerodyne early 2000s its got a slightly darker tone that would lend itself to jazz but still retains the strat character . Binding and painted headstock is super slick

We've all heard that the human hearing range is 20-20,000 Hz. But, I wonder how many people know that 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz are both the pitch Eb. I think this is the secret reason we like the sound of Eb. In the Baroque era, the note pitches sounded 1/2 step lower than those same pitches today. Like many guitarists, I tune my guitar to Eb standard, as it sounds better. 😎

I'd get a US Telecaster rather than a Strat for jazz; try a Seymour Duncan humbucker as the bridge pickup.

Eb is a big reason why I got my 7 string. I like Eb but…if I’m playing a tune like Round Midnight or something….I want an Eb an octave down from where the one on a normal 6 string guitar is.

I bought a Mexican made Fender Vintera 50s Modified Stratocaster in daphne blue a while ago and I simply love it. The modern C neck is just perfect my hand and the pickups sound good. Tremolo, locking tuners and other hardware is good and it stays in tune. Fret ends needed some filing but the guitar shop did it for me. Otherwise the finishing seems flawless to me. I replaced the original cheap looking 1 ply pickuguard with a funky orange 3 ply pickguard.

Hey Rotem - great video as always. Regarding Strats, the US 50th Anniversary Strat from '96 is a very nice guitar. But mid nineties in general was a good period for US Strats.Nice necks and nice pickups. Maybe not super light in terms of bodies but the lightness thing can be overdone. I've always found it's more down to the resonances in the wood in the particular guitar than the weight per se.

apparently people born with perfect pitch eventually "lose" their reference pitch of notes and hear "E" as "Eb" and so on for all other pitches. Perhaps Bach (and Yngwie...) were on to something with composing mostly in flat/sharp keys... :)

Great ideas and beautiful to listen to! a "newbie" question - I am always surprised to hear that "each key has it's own colour", and did really see this particular point demonstrated.. ie. how would the "colour" or character of this exactly same music be significantly different if it was played just one half step down or up? (say E or D)

12:25 The problem with playing around with those chords like you did is that it starts to sound like a John Mayer song. You’d have to pay me to play anything like that.
