I missed the opportunity to buy a new pair Falcon Acoustic LS3/5a Gold Badge edition in walnut from the distributor here in KL and it was selling for equivalent to £1,740 about 2 years ago.Now the price of these speakers has skyrocketed!
Great video again. Love the little personal side stories and insights to the people behind these little engineering gems. Sadly no classic sports car references in this episode 😀
Fair point, well made! Given that the M10 is such a small speaker, maybe we should have mentioned Mike's Midget, which he keeps locked away in his garage? He absolutely adores his little Midget, washes it lovingly and dotes on it. His little friend brings him lots of fun in return. That's a 1978 MG sportscar by the way, if any of you were wondering.
Great video Guys! As a newer audiophile I’m just now discovering brands like Falcon, Proac, and Spendor. Question for you: Falcon M10 or Proac Tablette 10? Thank you Gentlemen!
Not heard it, I'm afraid. As for the idea in general - do you mean [a] single full range drivers, or [b] coaxial or 'dual concentric' drivers, where the tweeter is set into the centre of a mid/bass unit, producing in effect a single point source? It's good to not have a crossover in theory, because they can only do bad things to the sound - at best they are lossy and have phase issues. A complex crossover will chew up amplifier power, for example. But the downsides often outweigh the upsides in practice, because with [a] no one driver can easily cover 100Hz to 10kHz, which is the bare minimum in terms of bandwidth - and ideally you'd want 20Hz to 20kHz. That's why some speaker manufacturers make [b], which splits the signal between two drivers and often use their mechanical properties to do the crossing over. These are more practical, but again you've got issues due to the different physical properties of the mid/bass cone and tweeter, and possible limits to mid/bass driver excursion. As ever, I think it's a case of 'it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it'. We need to treat speakers on a case-by-case basis. Certainly, speakers like Fujitsu Ten's Eclipse range make a very good case for [a], they're particularly talented in the time domain - but limited in bandwidth. Whereas with [b], big Tannoy Dual Concentrics also time very well but have a much wider bandwidth. Yet they're still limited compared to a big 3-way with a complex, well designed crossover, in terms of tonal smoothness and driver integration. As they say, "you pays your money and takes your choice!"
the falcon fb110 was produced to the original b110 specs and so do not need the thick coating of dope to pull the driver back to the original specs so the falcon ls3/5a is closer to the intended specs and also wont do the white belly thing in which the cone and doped layer delaminate . i have home made ls3/5a using all falcon matched pair ingredients and the blow my mind over and over and are getting better and better as they age. 😘
I found these the worst sounding speaker i heard at the Bristol Show. They sounded so bad i hand to return to the room later as i couldn't quite believe my ears.
I love listening to small bookshelf speakers for a while 😊
I like these two blokes, which is to say, these videos are too short!!
I love my Falcon 35a's I'm sure I'd like these. Great vid as usual.
Good to see a wider baffle that let's the backwave bounce clear and not reflect back into the cone itself
Have you fellas heard the Q7? I have a pair with the gold crossover and they are the best speakers I have heard.
Another very informative video guys 👍. Not a company I know much about.

Have you heard the Chartwell LS6? Would make an interesting comparison with the Majistra.

Great Video thank you ,whats the difference to the falcon 7.
Infinite baffle (Q7) vs ported (M10) mainly. M10 slightly larger too.

I honestly don't know, but I would love to do the comparison! Mike
I can’t decide between these and the LS3/5a
I feel your pain! Personally I loved the M10's but it really isn't an easy choice.
Mike
What do you think of single drive unit speakers like the Pearl Acoustics Sibelius, which doesn't have a crossover?
Not heard it, I'm afraid.

Build your own and save £4800. Its just a Mark Audio Driver in a Pencil cabinet design.

Could you explain why?
All you could hear was mids. They sounded recessed to my ears.
@bellrobert1978 thanks.
