I spent most of my life in and around L.A. and these fires are nothing new and neither are the Santa Ana winds which come every year. They are HOT winds that blow from the desert towards the Ocean, and during the time of year when they blow the vegetation is often at its driest. I remember driving through most of these neighborhoods at one time or another, and they were beautiful, but the beauty has always come with a price, wiith drought, fire danger, land and rock slides, etc. Building codes have allowed people to build in places that should have been off limits because none of those dangers are new. The fact that enough water wasn't available is also not new, and is totally the result of Governor Newsom's idotic policies. Now I live in No. CA surrounded by national forest, and two years ago I was also evacuated for over two weeks while a fire raged in my area. What's interesting is that about ten years ago I had a talk with the local fire chief about the fire-prone underbrush in the forest behind my place. He knew about it and stated there was nothing he could do because it was national forest land, and he admitted that there wasn't enough water if a fire broke out. The environmental policies which the democrats have instituted are against all common sense. At one point the forest service and our county had come to an agreement about cleaning up the forest underbrush, and then the environmentalists filed a lawsuit. That was the first time I realized that the Sierra Club was full of sh*t with their insane forest policies.Even the American Indian knew about using controlled fires a long time ago to clean out the underbrush. These crazy environmental policies that make no sense at all are the result of idiotic policies made by the democrats who have been running California for decades, and they need to be held accountable for this travesty. Whether or not voters have finally woken up is yet to be seen.

I was born and raised in Southern California and since I retired 3-years ago and moved out of state, I miss my beloved Santa Monica Mountains. Good friends have lost everything and I am heartbroken for them.

The shame lies in reducing funds for brush removal and cutting the fire department's budget, and then sending a lot of fire fighting equipment to Ukraine, all local political decisions. Add to that Newsom's idiotic water management decisions in a highly populated area that lacks water sources or rain, and this was bound to happen. It's happened on a smaller scale every year in California, so it's not new and anyone with common sense should have been aware and been better prepared.

The problem after the fire has destroyed lives they now have to contend with the insurance companies who won't want to pay. Second issue will be the two to three years to get permits to rebuild.
Any wise person will not build there, 3 years for permit will increase the cost of materials and labor. After 2020 construction labor and materials has doubled and tripled and in a place like California contractors will be price gouging. One would be better of to take insurance check and buy property in a red state with low taxes and less regulation

When I lived in San Diego during the 1990s a huge fire burned many homes and the Santa Ana wind blew ambers miles from the fire which landed on roof tops. The homes with wood shingle roofs burned from the roof down. Houses with tile roofs were unharmed. I drove through the devastation and it was surreal. Every other home was burned to the ground. The trees and yards were green and untouched but the homes were a pile of ash yet tile roof homes were fine. Tile roofs are extremely important in California.

I thought the same thing when they were announcing deadly winds they were giving everyone a heads up that when there is high winds power lines will go down and start a fire somewhere. So we’re so used to what happens during high winds that they are now considered “deadly” whenever we have 60+ mph wind. Look at the tubs fire in Santa Rosa. Same thing happened. One night the winds started kicking up super hard and that night the fire started and it happened so fast that no one ever expected something like that to have happened to that town. It comes with the territory of living in California. You want to live in the mountains, expect high fire risk, you want to live off the cliffs expect your house to eventually fall into the ocean.

Why did that sound familiar to me? And then I remembered. A couple years ago, they described the same thing over on west Maui before Lahaina burned down. Out of date utility poles Low water pressure invasive super dry vegatation just allowed to spread and flourish neglected in areas subject to long drought conditions. What did these relocated insurance companies know about the areas in Southern California, that most of us chose to ignore?
Citizens caught the arson that was lighting discarded Christmas trees in Woodland Hills. Suspected of starting the Kenneth Fire in that area. That fire is now 100% contained.

If the fire department had unlimited water and higher budget would they be able to do much with the strong winds and dry winter? There’s some mismanagement but the way the city was originally constructed has a largely due to why this fire is so bad. Basically no ability to create firebreaks without demolishing blocks of homes. Massive neighborhoods right next to big grass lands and perfect conditions for a terrible natural disaster.

Now I live in No. CA surrounded by national forest, and two years ago I was also evacuated for over two weeks while a fire raged in my area. What's interesting is that about ten years ago I had a talk with the local fire chief about the fire-prone underbrush in the forest behind my place. He knew about it and stated there was nothing he could do because it was national forest land, and he admitted that there wasn't enough water if a fire broke out.
The environmental policies which the democrats have instituted are against all common sense. At one point the forest service and our county had come to an agreement about cleaning up the forest underbrush, and then the environmentalists filed a lawsuit. That was the first time I realized that the Sierra Club was full of sh*t with their insane forest policies.Even the American Indian knew about using controlled fires a long time ago to clean out the underbrush.
These crazy environmental policies that make no sense at all are the result of idiotic policies made by the democrats who have been running California for decades, and they need to be held accountable for this travesty. Whether or not voters have finally woken up is yet to be seen.
I used to live in NorCal too n now in oregon.. I’ve realized the politics have mostly been virtue signal based and most prefer fight over nonsense than any sort of external reality or truth.

I patrolled the footprint of the Palisades|Sunset|Kenneth fires for 25-years as a Park Ranger/Wildland Firefighter. My first Ranger residence was Temescal Gateway Park in the Palisades. I was born and raised in Southern California and since I retired 3-years ago and moved out of state, I miss my beloved Santa Monica Mountains. Good friends have lost everything and I am heartbroken for them.

When extremely dry brush has not been removed and you have drought conditions together with the hot Santa Ana winds that blow in from the desert almost any little spark can cause a conflagration like this, deliberately or not. The shame lies in reducing funds for brush removal and cutting the fire department's budget, and then sending a lot of fire fighting equipment to Ukraine, all local political decisions. Add to that Newsom's idiotic water management decisions in a highly populated area that lacks water sources or rain, and this was bound to happen. It's happened on a smaller scale every year in California, so it's not new and anyone with common sense should have been aware and been better prepared.

When I lived in San Diego during the 1990s a huge fire burned many homes and the Santa Ana wind blew ambers miles from the fire which landed on roof tops. The homes with wood shingle roofs burned from the roof down. Houses with tile roofs were unharmed. I drove through the devastation and it was surreal. Every other home was burned to the ground. The trees and yards were green and untouched but the homes were a pile of ash yet tile roof homes were fine. Tile roofs are extremely important in California.

I thought the same thing when they were announcing deadly winds they were giving everyone a heads up that when there is high winds power lines will go down and start a fire somewhere. So we’re so used to what happens during high winds that they are now considered “deadly” whenever we have 60+ mph wind. Look at the tubs fire in Santa Rosa. Same thing happened. One night the winds started kicking up super hard and that night the fire started and it happened so fast that no one ever expected something like that to have happened to that town. It comes with the territory of living in California. You want to live in the mountains, expect high fire risk, you want to live off the cliffs expect your house to eventually fall into the ocean.

Citizens caught the arson that was lighting discarded Christmas trees in Woodland Hills. Suspected of starting the Kenneth Fire in that area. That fire is now 100% contained.

While I agree with the criticisms of the management and leadership in CA. If the fire department had unlimited water and higher budget would they be able to do much with the strong winds and dry winter? It would be good to have fire chief as guest to explain how we can protect our homes and prevent a future catastrophe.
Only way to prevent this is to do yearly prescribed burns to create fire lines so they can isolate flash ups from embers when the winds are like this.
There’s some mismanagement but the way the city was originally constructed has a largely due to why this fire is so bad. Basically no ability to create firebreaks without demolishing blocks of homes. Massive neighborhoods right next to big grass lands and perfect conditions for a terrible natural disaster.
