  • Vipiteno: This 4K walking tour video is filmed in August 2022. The temperature of that day is 27°C. Below you may find the history story of this place. Hope you will enjoy the video!
The area on which Vipiteno stands, once swampy and subject to frequent floods, was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In 14 BC, in all likelihood, Drusus Major founded a Roman military station with the name of Vipitenum nearby today's town. The purpose was to protect and monitor an important communication route to the lands beyond the Alps. With the great migrations of the Germanic peoples, in 550 the area was occupied by the Baiuvari, following their settlement, various centers developed including Sterzing, a toponym in German for Vipiteno.
Starting from the thirteenth century. under the dominion of Mainardo II Count of Tyrol, the village was elevated to the rank of city.
Vipiteno experienced its heyday between the 15th and 16th centuries thanks to the exploitation of its favorable position along the trade routes towards central and northern Europe but above all by virtue of the exploitation of the silver mines in the nearby Val Ridanna and Val di Fleres. The flourishing mining activity attracted to the city some of the most important families of entrepreneurs, not only from the region but also from neighboring Germany, above all the Fuggers from Augsburg. The most famous legend linked to Vipiteno tells that a crippled pilgrim named Störz was the first inhabitant of the city. This legendary character is still visible in the city coat of arms together with the Tyrolean eagle which symbolizes the city's centuries-old opposition to the ecclesiastical Bressanone.
The most iconic places in Vipiteno are the Torre delle Dodici, the Town Hall (built between 1468 and 1473) which houses one of the oldest theater halls in Tyrol, the commander of the Teutonic Knights, the Church of the Holy Spirit (XIV sec.) with its spectacular frescoes and the Parish of Our Lady of the Swamp.

A very nice tour, I was there in 1971 as a teenager with my family, we were staying in Mutters Austria and had coach trip to Sterzing, the tour guide said it had two names because Austria and Italy both claimed it as theirs.
I bought a watch in one of the jewelers shops. at a cost of around £7
I remember going up the Dolomites which from memory has 8 hairpin bends, looking out of the coach window there was a sheer drop, at the top parked cars were blocking the path of the coach, the driver beeped his horn, no one moved the cars so he drove the coach slowly through them.
Two weeks holiday cost £72 plus coach trips, my wages were £12 per week
