It kinda works a bit, but you need to breed the double recessive cat with a LOT of different cats and then breed those kids together. The ones that get the double recessive gene and no glaring health problems get bred with a bunch of different cats, and their kids get bred with their cousins and you take the naked ones without health problems and call that a breed.

trying to keep the rare breed alive doesn't work, animals will degenerate. But keeping a specific trait alive works. Instead of trying to safekeep some ancient breed it's just more natural and humane to create new breeds based off old ones, like we do with cows and such

Probably not, but interesting. Maybe you've heard the phrase of a pet "shedding their winter coat"? The coat, the fur and its growth is actually _different_ it's not just replacing one-to-one the same hair. That's why they shed seasonally. Thicker winter coat with different hair densities, which need to be shed so as to not overheat in summer, etc. I think the fur appearing to change for the opposite seasons actually *isn't* - I bet it's actually the different hair for the summer that manages to grow more than the winter coat does. Would be interesting to know! I think that'd probably be related to the genes causing the hairlessness in the first place too! 🤔

I got a pair of ragdoll cross kittens (their mum is full ragdoll, their dad is passing Tom she hooked up with when she escaped the house). And someone told us to not let small children near them because the small children would maul and hurt them and they wouldn't put up a fight. Yes, they are floppy and friendly and fluffy, but they definitely put up a fight if you take it too far.

I can respect that, just wanted to add that most of today's pets and farm animals are heavily bred/genetically modified, as are the vegetables, fruits, roots etc that we eat. Again, I'm not trying to challenge your perception, but wanted to balance it out by adding that without heavy breeding, humanity wouldn't be able to feed itself or have domesticated companions.
I feel like they're coming from a place more like "hey it's fucked up that we inbred this animal over and over again just because we think it's cool" and not "all breeding is bad". @@realrebelli0nOne thing I'd note is for a long time, animals were bred and selected for a good degree of physical fitness and survival because you know, you can't have a working dog that doesn't work, or a cow that dies before it can give you milk. A lot of modern pet breeding is highly controlled for aesthetics or selective traits regardless of the physical fitness of the animals involved. That's not to say that breeding other animals hasn't caused issues in them in the past (sheep need to be sheared or will suffer, iirc), but the focus on productive and working animals means that they're much more overall healthy than, say, a modern pug. EDIT: To be clear, I'm not a vegan and just talking from my own viewpoint. Vegans will probably still find a lot wrong with how we've bred many animals like sheep and cows, but I'm talking respective to show animals.
As a very allergic person - no cat or dog is truly hypoallergenic unfortunately. I actually found these little guys to be worse since they're dropping hair more often. Still cuties though!!!
Weirdly enough a high content wolf dog or hybrid wildcat would be hypoallergenic. As a different species wolves and wildcats produce entirely different allergins compared to their domestic counterparts.
So far nobody with cat allergies that ventured willingly into our apartment has reacted to our bengals. They tend to produce less of the enzyme people usually are allergic to. They have fur and it's very soft but it's really not the fur itself that causes the issues.

If this breed of cats is important enough to keep alive for centuries, why in hell would they give the last survivors to a random white guy? The whole story is ridiculous, and it’s compounded by geographic distance (even with trade networks), as well as the differing climate. If these cats were bred for the humid climate of central Mexico, how in heck would these binguses survive in the harshly sunny, dry desert climate of the American southwest?

Maternal impression was a complicated thing, but it wasn't purely bad. It was often used as an excuse by midwives to protect newborn babies who are clearly not biologically related to the husband. I know of one story from renaissance italy where a couple who owned a cafe had a baby who was not white, and the midwife got really angry at the husband for letting his wife work all the way through the pregnancy, and if she didn't have to look at coffee for days at the time the baby would look more like the husband. Its really interesting if you look into it more, it's not always as misogynistic as the concept first appears.

Historical concepts are weird like that but It can still be a misogynist concept and have accidentally stumbled on that benefit. It’s a credit more to the women at the time being able to ask for autonomy and authority using backwards logic than it is on how “good” the theory is. I didn't own a Sphynx breed, but I did recently put down my sweet Bunni, (Born on easter for the name, she was put down because she couldn't walk anymore) this week. This video helped me a lot. I miss her so much. Please, hug your babies for me. Whether they be Cats, Dogs, Snakes, Lizards, Spiders, or even Human, you'll never know when the last moments will be. I think they grow more hair in the summer because you have air conditioning and you live in canada, so in the house they would be spending time by the warm heaters during the winter and then be actually colder when your using the air conditioning in the summer

I love sphynxes! I didn't realize they were such a recent breed. Alas, as I almost always adopt rescues or shelter cats, I'm unlikely to have my very own bingus any time soon. Wh have Ancient Egyptian heyroglyphics not only depicting cats in high positions, but telling us about cats personally owned by pharos. We have mummified cats, that people went the full length of going through the whole lengthy process of creating ancient Egyptian style mummy's to pay their respects to little fluffy's (made up name) life. It's been going on for millennia. I think the only places I heard of where cats weren't treated great is medieval England, where people would just brick a living cat into their walls when building the house for good luck, leaving the little guy to starve and die, or potentially be buried alive by the building process. Or the fate of black cats, which in much of the western world were (and still are to some extent) considered unlucky. There's probably more, tbh. It's kinda sad.

I read an old book about cats (from the 1960’s or so) and it still cited the maternal impression theory as the case of why ragdoll cats are so docile (something about the founding mother of the breed having been in a car accident and gotten very frightened, so naturally her kittens would be very meek) as absolute fact. A friend of mine is a taxidermist, and he’s found a lot of strange old stuff where people thought they’d found (or tried to trick others that they’d found) hybrid animals, one such being a wolf-bear hybrid that just looks like a really messed-up bear (with some illness/birth defect). My two cats are 100% moggies, since they’re rescues so I have absolutely no idea of their parentage. They’re still perfect and incredible boys, just like every other cat out there.

Dermis and Epidermis are perfect names for hairless cats. I'm still on the fence about health consequences for alopecia'd versions of god's cutest predators, but I was happy to see how well loved yours are.
I haven't seen many warnings about the breed that aren't also problems for many other breeds. Sun burn is the big outlier, of course

In the Boston post article, "prodigies" is the intended term. Here its use means extremely unusual, in the same sense in which we call an extremely and precociously talented person a prodigy. So the Boston Post writer was calling the hairless cats prodigies in the sense of "highly out of the ordinary". The parable of the prodigal son in the bible is also pointing to this meaning; it's not normal for a son to 1. Ask his father for his inheritance before he's dead, and 2. For the same son to be accepted back into the paternal household.
You can also see the use of the word in terms like "prodigiously wealthy."

Always found animal breeding icky but never learned much about cat breeding thanks for sharing.
I can respect that, just wanted to add that most of today's pets and farm animals are heavily bred/genetically modified, as are the vegetables, fruits, roots etc that we eat. Again, I'm not trying to challenge your perception, but wanted to balance it out by adding that without heavy breeding, humanity wouldn't be able to feed itself or have domesticated companions.
I feel like they're coming from a place more like "hey it's fucked up that we inbred this animal over and over again just because we think it's cool" and not "all breeding is bad". Like yeah who cares about vegetables being heavily bred, there's an actual reason for it and all the fucked up offspring we didn't get right can't feel pain.

@@realrebelli0nOne thing I'd note is for a long time, animals were bred and selected for a good degree of physical fitness and survival because you know, you can't have a working dog that doesn't work, or a cow that dies before it can give you milk. A lot of modern pet breeding is highly controlled for aesthetics or selective traits regardless of the physical fitness of the animals involved. That's not to say that breeding other animals hasn't caused issues in them in the past (sheep need to be sheared or will suffer, iirc), but the focus on productive and working animals means that they're much more overall healthy than, say, a modern pug.
EDIT: To be clear, I'm not a vegan and just talking from my own viewpoint. Vegans will probably still find a lot wrong with how we've bred many animals like sheep and cows, but I'm talking respective to show animals.

As a very allergic person - no cat or dog is truly hypoallergenic unfortunately. I actually found these little guys to be worse since they're dropping hair more often. Still cuties though!!!
Plus a lot of animal allergies are triggered by skin, not hair.

Weirdly enough a high content wolf dog or hybrid wildcat would be hypoallergenic. As a different species wolves and wildcats produce entirely different allergins compared to their domestic counterparts.

So far nobody with cat allergies that ventured willingly into our apartment has reacted to our bengals. They tend to produce less of the enzyme people usually are allergic to. They have fur and it's very soft but it's really not the fur itself that causes the issues.

And, say that the Pueblo people got these Aztec cats in 1600 (generous estimate, considering the Aztec empire fell 80 years prior). If this breed of cats is important enough to keep alive for centuries, why in hell would they give the last survivors to a random white guy?
The whole story is ridiculous, and it’s compounded by geographic distance (even with trade networks), as well as the differing climate. If these cats were bred for the humid climate of central Mexico, how in heck would these binguses survive in the harshly sunny, dry desert climate of the American southwest?
The cat thing is definitely not true, but the Pueblo people did have trade with mesoamerican cultures. Did the victorians know that? Probably not, they probably just didn't care enough to differentiate. Still a Pueblo person could have legit Aztec items which is really cool

There was some really unethical breeding stuff going on there and I'd like if more people knew about it before they bought the breed. Also lots of drama. Maternal impression was a complicated thing, but it wasn't purely bad. It was often used as an excuse by midwives to protect newborn babies who are clearly not biologically related to the husband. I know of one story from renaissance italy where a couple who owned a cafe had a baby who was not white, and the midwife got really angry at the husband for letting his wife work all the way through the pregnancy, and if she didn't have to look at coffee for days at the time the baby would look more like the husband. Its really interesting if you look into it more, it's not always as misogynistic as the concept first appears.
Genetics are such it's possible for two "white" ppl to have "dark skinned baby". However, very interesting point! Good things and bad from those beliefs for sure.
Historical concepts are weird like that but It can still be a misogynist concept and have accidentally stumbled on that benefit. It’s a credit more to the women at the time being able to ask for autonomy and authority using backwards logic than it is on how “good” the theory is. If a theory is vague, there’s bound to be some “good” results but that’s not due to the theory being right, more a specific context and circumstances of when it is being invoked. An example is that’s why more extreme feminists ask for the patriarchy to be dismantled, because we aren’t truly free of the limits of misogyny in their view because we have simply just adapted it into every facet of our lives that it is impossible to seperate.

I didn't own a Sphynx breed, but I did recently put down my sweet Bunni, (Born on easter for the name, she was put down because she couldn't walk anymore) this week. This video helped me a lot. I miss her so much. Please, hug your babies for me. Whether they be Cats, Dogs, Snakes, Lizards, Spiders, or even Human, you'll never know when the last moments will be. Love while you can, they deserve it.

I think they grow more hair in the summer because you have air conditioning and you live in canada, so in the house they would be spending time by the warm heaters during the winter and then be actually colder when your using the air conditioning in the summer

I love sphynxes! I didn't realize they were such a recent breed. Alas, as I almost always adopt rescues or shelter cats, I'm unlikely to have my very own bingus any time soon. I think the only places I heard of where cats weren't treated great is medieval England, where people would just brick a living cat into their walls when building the house for good luck, leaving the little guy to starve and die, or potentially be buried alive by the building process. Or the fate of black cats, which in much of the western world were (and still are to some extent) considered unlucky.

This video makes me so happy, it was so interesting to learn about! I read an old book about cats (from the 1960’s or so) and it still cited the maternal impression theory as the case of why ragdoll cats are so docile (something about the founding mother of the breed having been in a car accident and gotten very frightened, so naturally her kittens would be very meek) as absolute fact.
A friend of mine is a taxidermist, and he’s found a lot of strange old stuff where people thought they’d found (or tried to trick others that they’d found) hybrid animals, one such being a wolf-bear hybrid that just looks like a really messed-up bear (with some illness/birth defect).
My two cats are 100% moggies, since they’re rescues so I have absolutely no idea of their parentage. They’re still perfect and incredible boys, just like every other cat out there.
