They should have gotten together. All the signs were there: the good chemistry, the witty banter, the no BS. The only reason they didn't is so the writers could write more scenes of Nathan being girl-crazy for the rest of the season, and that's a real shame because the relationship had a lot going for it and halting it stagnated his character a little bit, slowing the growth he'd been showing throughout the first season and the beginning of the second.
I fully agree !! I found the whole show suffered from them not getting together. That might be a stretch, but it did exactly what you said, it halted their character arcs and so none of them could really grow. It felt totally out of the blue that they didn’t wind up together, they built it up and up and up and then randomly nothing ? It felt so forced. They were the perfect match that I would’ve never guessed would be perfect from the start of the show. I sort of lost interest after it fell apart and Nathan reverted back to his old ways. He would always be a wanker but I think he had so much more potential as a character with Kelly.

I loved everything about their relationship including when it graduated to true friendship. Kelly had a chance to trust a man again and Nathan made his first ever female friend that he went out of his way to respect. It became less complicated and more wholesome when it was platonic.
Here’s my take on it: I actually liked the idea of them remaining platonic (although I agree that the romantical element of their relationship could’ve worked). I just don’t like how the show carried it out. Since the first episode, their bond grew & they had great chemistry that was refreshing to see w/ characters like them. But after Kelly kinda rejected Nathan, i felt that a lot of the lead up of them being close was shattered and never was recovered. For example, when that girl w/ the ability to make anyone wHoLeSoMe was trying to get Kelly, Nathan was frantic and worried sick about her even though she wasn’t going to actually hurt her. But later in s2 when Kelly got kidnapped by that murderous video game guy- he acted like he could give two shits & that broke my heart tbh
