I've been polepear fishing for about a year now and I love it. my best advice is similar to his, buy a speargun especially if you want to go for the bigger fish. I like to stay with smaller fish like calico and sand bass but I do want to eventually get a speargun and move towards bigger fish
Could you do a video on how to set up new line/ monofilament or leave some instructions and like how to load back the gun and put the line back in the line realease??
We have a video on chest loading a speargun and in one of our earlier videos 'spearfishing cronulla' theres footage of an entire reload. In saying that still will look at making a video with this content in there, thank you for the suggestion.
Thanks so much!! This video explains a lot of things that are simple but you really cleared things up... do you think a cressi Apache speargun (75cm) would be a good beginner gun.. I’m not spearing in an ocean..
@@nieder8386 sure, we're overdue for a video so will try and do one before Christmas. Youd probly go alright with a 75cm depending on what youre targeting but if you got maybe a 90cm you'd have a speargun that could be used in the ocean too if you got the chance

Comes down to preference and trial and error. Because we rock hop shorter stiffer fins like mares are better. See if you can borrow some otherwise mad Mick can do 20+ metres in just standard fins so maybe practice is needed.

Hi there, great info! Love it! One thing that troubles me is that I don't know how tight a wetsuit should be when it comes to spearfishing. I'm a skinny guy, and water sometimes creeps in from the collar down into the suit. This would give me the chill and over time it'd kill my stamina. So I wonder if I should go for an absolutely tight wetsuit that's watertight right from the collar, or is there any alternative way to go about this. Many thanks! Subscription well earned.
Hi Tom, Thanks for the comment! I currently use a Torelli two piece wetsuit. It is designes to hug your skin so water ingress is virtually non existant. The catch is that you have to use soapy water to lube up the inside of the suit so it can be put on. It is one of the warmest wetsuits ive ever had and has a hood attached but cost about $300. There are other brands with same style about. Mad Mick uses a generic one piece steamer with the zipper on the back which only cost about $150. He bought an aftermarket hood to put on which minimizes water ingress from the neck. Wetsuits will always be tighter on land then loosen up once youre in the water but be careful its not too tight otherwise it will restrict movement in your arms making loading your gun and swimming difficult. The best thing to do would be to find a good dive shop and chat to someone there about what youre after. I had a good chat with the owner of obsession dive in Taren Point, Sydney who was able to tell me an appropriate size and wetsuit to choose. I hope this helps.
The best informative vid I’ve seen and it’s answered a lot! Just one question though, how long does the line have to be from your gun handle to your float?
Ha ha that's funny mate, get swimming lessons, if you can't swim you can't spearfish, and you need to be a confident swimmer to hold your breath under water, but good luck anyhow
My problem with gloves is I can't feel a damn thing through them, do you have a recommendation for a glove where you can feel through them. I have gone bare handed and landed up with scrapped up hands, not too painful but gloves only for protection is what I am looking for, I can deal with cold hands. Any suggestions?
hi Don, the gloves we are using currently are from bunnings theyre a soft grip which means they are a thin comfy material and the fingers and palms are coated in a reasonably tough rubber/latex. had my pair for 12mths and still good to use. good finger movements and still get peotection from rocks and lobsters! i can upload a photo of them to my instagram if you want to see what they look like. just let me know.
hey mate, 15metres is about the average, wouldnt go any less than that. Always attach it to ya gun. its safer and if you manage to find something bigger to spear you can let go of ya gun and hold on to your line and float.
Hey man I'm just starting spearfishing and want to know whether I should get a weight belt and how much weight to put on it. I'll only be diving shallow up to 3 mtrs.
if youre using a wetsuit you should get a weight belt as it helps you save energy and breath even in shallow water. the amount of weight will depend on the type of wetsuit and your own body. you will have the right amount of weight when you have neautral buoyancy in the first 10metres of saltwater. its a bit of a guessing game to get that right.
+Ozair Khan feels fine, you just have to equalize your ears by pinching your nose shut and blowing until your ear pops. to conserve energy you just got to keep your heart rate slow and stay relaxed with slow paced movements
Thank you, it was also hard to hear how much weight you were using. I bought a Cressi Apnea 5mm wetsuit (like new, a return) and I agree with you it is a bit rigid and very buoyant. I ordered a cheap Seavevenger 3mm wetsuit similar to surgers wetsuits, easier to wear and more flexible. But zipper on the back is not ideal as you may get some cold water in at times. I plan to use it with a 1.5 mm Meosport top i have so it would prevet that cold water seepage on my back
stefano giovannini yes the wind blowing made it hard. With weight you should be at neutral buoyancy in the first 10 metres of water so you may have to adjust a couple of times to get it right. hope that helps and happy hunting!
The gun is from a local dive shop and yep, fins 20 bucks from the bargain bin at windang dive shop, as for masks that comes down to preference and budget. We are budget divers as not everyone can afford to spend thousands on gear especially if they're only starting out.
Sadness is when you live in a poor country without sea access, yet you are a more skilled diver than those who offer to train when you travel to a coastal country. Also, I think that gear (when it used to be expensive) had higher production standards. I use diving masks that I inherited, some are almost 20-30 years old- and rubber still holds firmly. Last year I lost one because a plastic segment (after 15-20 years of use) finally snapped. Gun oil helps rubber bear all storage conditions. In Europe, Italians have extremely good quality equipment (such as pneumatic Mares speargun I got for 100 euro), but Greeks usually make more affordable equipment (ok quality, but sold only locally). Also, for our standards- 5mm full wetsuit is waaaaay too expensive for non-professional divers. I generally use synthetic clothing (one size smaller T-shirt and pants that stick to my body), and I have never met a person using a float. People usually wear nets to store caught fish (attached to shoulders or hips), I personally use a 30-year-old belt net with a pocket for extra harpoon tips. Also, purge valve snorkel is a big no-no. They have higher prices, often malfunction, and a diver with a proper lung capacity has no troubles emptying a normal, standard one. When you're out of money- you become imaginative.
You don't have sharks in Italy? No one in their right mind uses a net attached to their body to keep fish they spear if they swim where sharks are. Sharks are in every body of saltwater I've been to.
nice video, and very good story for beginers. where are you , australia W or E coast? respect for sharing and best regards for you and especially for cameraman who has endured to the end of video.
You don't put the pole spear out in front of you when you're actually swimming... you carry it close to the tip and unloaded until you're ready to start hunting/stalking/shooting. While it's true this can be more difficult and time consuming than a spear gun there ARE advantages to a pole spear. For one reload is as simple as sliding your hand back up the pole... allowing for multiple shots per dive. For two they're cheaper. For three they're mechanically simple (which means less to go wrong, less to fiddle with, etc.) I don't know how many of my friends have had to call the dive because their gun broke in some way.. needless to say they're infuriated. And the last point I want to make is that they're more difficult to aim and use... which I see as a benefit rather than a negative. Let's face it... spearing fish is almost too easy with a speargun that it makes it boring. Just point and pull the trigger. Who would you be more impressed with and which is more "sporting"? It's kind of like hunting with a rifle and hunting with a longbow. One takes money to buy gear that takes away the need for a skill... the other takes skill and lots of it. I can use a gun and get fish all day... my buddy however couldn't kill a fish with a pole spear if his life depended on it. Just saying... up your game.
Yeah guys that's what spearfishing is all about, let's see who can out do each other, you blokes miss the point you admitted using a hand spear takes more skill so why would a learner diver want to use something that would take more skill to use
Mad Mick Because learning on something that takes more skill teaches you fundamentals. You learn to be stealthy in your approach. When or if you buy a gun then you'll be able to use those skills to be better.
