    As Socrates left no written works, the allegory of the cave comes from Plato quoting Socrates in his dialogues.

      Richard Scott , thanks for shedding some light on the allegory of the cave , because I'm thinking wait wasn't that Plato? He was saying Socrates . Ok so it was Plato quoting his works. Thank you for clearing that up.

    YOU,SIR ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

    Great skills, big fan, but I think there's a mistake in the perspective at 0:59, the two girls on the beach, if the one in the back is the same high than the one in the front, she has been placed too low, the skyline should be at the same place than the front one, at the shoulders...
    well I guess you always can say the front one is standing on a box and it doesn't really matters...
    Anyway still very Very good

    I'm not with Nerdrum on all points. I've been schooled in modern academia, and while a lot of contemporary art is cynical, narcissistic and shallow (with a focus on "smart"), I see value in some of it. I value modernism, I value some installation. But they seem to not be the same thing as this type of painting. It's absurd how many things are stuffed into the "art" category. From ironic concepts to elitist entertainment, to amateur hobby painters with cheap acrylics, to philosophers and poets. I don't like that all of these things are called "art". Hence the separate term "kitsch", but I'm not sure I like that either.
    Anyway..
    People who say Nerdrum can't compare to old masters, I disagree. He is extremely skilled. He isn't overrated. Anyone who paints should know that. He has created his own world, what you can find there is profound, and he is extremely skilled. If you like the man or not, he is.

    • @duantorruellas716
      @duantorruellas716 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree , Nerdum is very skilled and he doesn't come off like a wanna be intellectual , he is down to earth and he knows what he knows and he doesn't mind voicing his opinion. Just like everyone else he's just a person. I hate the fact that just because a person is in the public eye people can come with their judgmental bullshit. Public opinion just like these potshots in the comments against Scott and Nerdum is lame. Its good to see that You're non polarized and you like what you like and you don't have to bash anyones work to prove it.

    Incroyable! De plus, votre chambre vous rappelle les anciens ateliers et demeures des peintres du 21ème siècle !
    Quelle chance a Richard T Scott que la peinture soit de retour, accrochée aux murs ! Toutes nos félicitations!

    Great work Scott , good luck with all you projects. I understand what you mean when you talk about Rembrandt and Nerdum . It's about the way the light hits the form and the color plains of the skin . It's not a tight smooth look. It's more the way edges fade into the background darkness. Yes I can see differences between the two painters and the end result. And yes they are different , but that's ok. There is nothing one would call pretty about they're work , but to me it has a certain realism that's timeless and organic.

    I'm sorry. Mentioning Nerdrum and Rembrandt in the same sentence tells me all I need to know. It baffles me how anyone can equate the sublime beauty, the spatial plasticity, and the profound depths of Rembrandt with the twisted, misguided, narcissistic, and in the end untalented smudgings of Nerdrum. I would suggest burning everything, and just starting over with a clear head.

    • @jetsonjoe
      @jetsonjoe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      konzwambii Best summary comment on this whole video....did I just roll my eyes...blahblahblah........and I would do the same...as you commented...burning everything and starting over....some nice work...but he drifts into others worlds and leaves his own in dust...what a shame...be yourself

    • @jetsonjoe
      @jetsonjoe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      konzwambii You know I was thinking the same thing...he could be a great painter if he would only forget the mental shackles of his past influences...shame that talent is stuck or attracted to the schlock of Nerdrum...it almost gives them total redundancy....each to their own I guess. And yes I would start over to...if that is at all possible.

    I remember looking at Paris private Galleries hoping for good figurative work whilst realising that art critically academic art to the French nowadays would be plain daft but still thought it mental that no "traditional" art gallery existed.Good luck to L'Oeil du Prince next time I will check you out.

    True, I may not be pretty, but for some reason nearly all of my self portraits have sold. I'm not sure why, as it goes against conventional wisdom, and I'm as perplexed as you are about it.

    • @kevinolson6886
      @kevinolson6886 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      all throughout History I have found interest sitting inside biblical art and self portraiture. To see the art, to see the artist. Even their closest loved ones can grow tiresome or be overlooked if not addressed as a principle subject of study while conducting a the scientific analysis of experimentation in art. the thought, idea, question,subject (hypothesis) the experiment, the results and analysis.
      Although hyper traditional the experiment only starts there, Self Portraits remain superior in art for the feeding of ego, easy read from an insider or outsider of the art world, modenity/classicism and simple nestalgia. Plus the bonus of hyper flexibility.
      I really like that you worked with both these star artists and find Kitsch art worthwhile. The Nerdrum school, his apprentice's, im finding more often more exciting in their work than Nerdrum's. The expectation to see great work is an air that I see from artist to artist that has worked alongside and under his watch. I hope to see clarity and higher level analytics taking place as I rise looking up to the generation before me. I hope the best for you as you continue working.

    I paint representational work myself-- I hold in high contempt what your associate said though-- art isn't just about telling a story it's about expressing yourself.
    It is that uppity attitude that people have that makes art so bad for me-- why should you see yourself as superior? Just paint.

    The revolt against the paucity of the 20th cent "art" has produced far too many Nerdrum , Freud,Wyeth clones.....trying to re-invest painting with"meaning"...resulting in a boring sameness...the very reason for the impressionist "revolt" which led to the absurdity of "modernism".;art as progress.........painting is a nice way to live ,spent my life there...but painting as ART is dead ..................the REAL art of the 20th is movies...the truly inventive artist of the 20th is Disney....Odd himself said he's a Kitsch painter...true ,but it's relatively harmless occupation.....like building harpsichords ,or other archaic CRAFTS....Mozart is still relavent , but to write as he did (as tho' one could) would be absurd
