I live in Germany and my brother had this Game when we were kids. it was PAL version as usual in Germany but there was no censorship. i remember the corpses, the blood fountain and all this stuff.
Apparently it was Germany that had a big whinge about the blood and gore and demanded Konami or Sega to censor it. So because of that country having a sook, all of us in PAL regions got the same watered down version. Germany also banned Mortal Kombat when it first came out so this story is quite believable.
In the US version, they kept nearly everything in the Japanese version… but added in Eric’s more masculine faces _which I much prefer,_ the character name is changed from Elizebeth Bathory to Elizebeth Bartley (I don’t know why) While the manual adding extra back story is a thing, it’s not related to the game directly, it is funny how PoR’s Eric Lecarde decides to go with his US facial adaptations though

It's ironic that the PAL version had so much violent imagery removed that it was butchered and it's also hilarious that one of the ways the game was censored was to make Eric's face less pretty. I guess censors thought that bishounen in games was just as taboo as violence, religious imagery, and nudity in the West.
About his face, I think it's for a similar reason why Kirby is always happy in the Japanese covers and angry in the US versions. I'm guessing americans don't want their heroes to be cute or beautiful, only badass. I wouldn't call it censorship, it's more like localization. Me, I tend to prefer the original always.

I loved it because after owning a NES and dealing with their with their whole "video games are for children and should have nothing objectionable or scary in them" it was cool as a 13 year old to see the genesis be ok with gore and more "horror" imagery
The games in Europe were censored I know that in Germany the game Contra by Konami was censored by the name and violence, they changed the name to Probotector and the characters to robots, maybe it's the reason the games in Europe are different it didn't make sense to make two different versions to the same continent!
I bought the Castlevania Classic Collection for Xbox One last night and I'm pleased to announce it has the US version and therefore all the gore! (The JP Vampire Hunter version is available too!) PAL version is a farce!
Personally I disagree - You can lose context and don't get to experience the artform the way it was originally intended to be experienced. Given the option I will always favour uncensored music, games and films.

I am a Canadian Gamer living in Europe. You notice these censoring all the time. The absolute worst for me is with twisted metal black. (Sorry I’m a PS2 guy) In twisted metal black they removed all the prequel mid and ending videos for all characters. I mean without these videos wtf is the point. Oh and Manhunt 1 and 2 are still banned and illegal even to resell in Germany.

I'm shocked to find out that the game is even easier over in Japan. I didn't find it particularly hard either way (with the exception of the three-phase final boss), so I guess that goes to show that Japanese gamers are weaker than you'd think.

In japan Rentals are Illegal, so you generally have the true difficulty that the developers intended you to experience. In the US a lot of publishers tried to make the games very hard so you could not beat them during rentals.

But I guess they're not quite well received or popular by Westerners by similar reasons.

Actually most modern violent games are highly censored in Japan. Any kind of extreme gore and dismemberment is totally removed in JP localizations.

It shouldn't. "To hang" is an irregular verb and "impalation" is the same thing as "impalement".
