His main concern is that the police were massively outnumbered on the day, so although what he did wasn't ideal, it was practical. He's copped a lot of flak probably, but he actually just de-escalated the situation using common sense.

The police man telling him he's causing the protesters to assault him simply by standing there is just like the world telling Israel that they are causting Hamas to attack them simply by existing. In the British police's defence, they were not looking at the context of the argument and simply attempting to move the man for his own safety. They are there to protect the public. If the man complied, he could have told the officer what happened with the woman putting the flag in his face and his rights being breached and asked for the police to speak to her afterwards, the police would have understood.
