🙏sir, first of all we thanq for your great and respectful reaction about our culture ,it's a way of worshiping in south india, particularly in KARNATAKA, that too in south Karnataka and here in South canara, udupi,Dharmasthala, kundhapur etc places.its like how you go to church and confess with the father or preist, and get solution and blessings,in the same way in this ritual through preist the god is speaking and giving the solution ,blessings, punishment etc.its done with respect ,faith ,belief and divinity this song meaning or translation goes roughly like this, this is lirycs Aa Aa Aa Aa Ra Aa Varaha Roopam Daiva Varishtam Varaha Roopam Daiva Varishtam Varasmitha Vadanam Vajra Dantadhara Raksha Kavacham Shiv Sambhutha Bhuvi Samjatha Nambi Dawa Gimbu Koduvavaneetha Saavira Daivada Mana Sampritha Bedutha Nindevu Aaradhisutha Meaning or translation ------------------------------------ VARAAHA ROOPAM MEANS a boar form(avatharam of a boar,it's a Sanskrit word, when the earth was sinking ,lord vishnu took this boar form and lifted the earth with his two protuding tooth,(if you googal DASHAVATARAM you get the stories of lord Vishnus 10 forms or avatharam) Daiva varistam means ,most superior among the dieties, Varasmita vadanam means Beautiful, soothing face Vajra Dantadhara Raksha Kavacham means Having Strong as diamond like teeth Protective shield Shiv Sambhutha Bhuvi Samjatha Nambi Dawa Gimbu Koduvavaneetha means Lord Shiva's form or connected with lord shiva and one who is born on earth, blesses and fulfils wishes of one who believes him Saavira Daivada Mana Sampritha Bedutha Nindevu Aaradhisutha means Thousands of god's favourite We stand begging for his blessings by worshiping and glorifying him🙏
In rural tamilnadu also we have this Sami adal. Kuladeivam. I think all over south India it's there. Only the kuladeivam name différés. When I was a child in my village it was there.
The more i discover about my Sanatan Dharma, the more i respect it, and the more i realise that it's THE way of life. Nothing else. The multilayered culture, beliefs, history and accuracy of my Sanatan Dharma is so complicated and compelling that it simply can't be false. In my childhood i avoided going to famous temples because of the crowd and long queues but now i have the utmost respect for my Dharma.
Varaha, the third incarnation of Lord. Vishnu, the supreme among all Gods. The belief is that the holy guardian forest sprit Panjurli (which is in the form of a wild boar) and Guliga protect the forest and the people living off of the forest. During this dance performance its believed the dancers go in trance and divine sprit communicates thru them to address any concerns devotees would have. For example if I have a difficult decision to take like should I pursue a certain job or sell a certain property or family disputes and problems they seek audience with the divine sprite communicating thru the dancer. The gesture of dancer tapping hands in there chest is a sign of assurance of protection ( meaning I am there for you ). The different gestures mean different things and it can vary from assurance, warning to touching of hands to warm hugs. Its said out of the audience the sprit will read your heart and choose who to communicate to. I different parts of India there are different local demi gods called Kshetra (place in Sanskrit) Palaka (protector in Sanskrit) Daiva (god). In Tamilnadu there is similar tradition of Ayyanar, Karuppu Sami, at time it would be a demi goddess as well.
its not related to vishnus avatar VARAHA ROOPAM was given to represent panjurli since its boar form similar to lord vishnu varaha form, its just a sanskrit word
This movie is a masterpiece and I won't be able to get it out of my head for years to come. I have witnessed something beyond acting and cinematography. It was a treat to my eyes watching this movie in the theatres in Kanada (with subtitles as I am not native to this language). Apart from all the details added by numerous people about the two dieties, I would like to add that I could connect to this movie as the concept of Kula-daivam (ancestral gods) is native to every village in india (north or south) and this point really helps people outside of Karnataka to really connect with this movie. Thank you Rishab shetty & the entire team for this divine blockbuster.
Saying kula daivam is ancestral God is ambiguous. It's not ancestor worship, but a God chosen and worshipped over many generations of the family - the kula
@@sancti3707 Thanks for pointing out the ambiguity. But I never mentioned that Kula-daivam is about ancestors as gods. Our culture has a very broad class of daivam (ista daivam, kula daivam, etc and also worshipping ancestors as gods) which i think cannot be explained enough in a TH-cam comment😅. But I hope the message about the movie was conveyed to you keeping aside the technicalities. 🙏
You are absolutely right. This dance form which is a part of a practice called Bhoota Kola is unique to a small region of Karnataka state in India. Each small region of the state has some unique form of worship of god and ancestors. Here the worship is that of a spirit of ancestors who have come down to fight injustice. The whole thing is an experience as you said, takes hours to prepare and unique in visuals and music. This form is hundreds of years old and has influenced the newer form called Yakshagana that came into being around 1300 CE. The movie itself has cultural, political and ecological overtones but this particular piece is a very successful mix of Paaddana (folklore oral narrative), Carnatic classical music and Hard Rock. The music and video together not only show how music from different cultures can mix, but that practices of any culture can mix with another, and nature and humans co-exist.
I am feeling proud of Mr Rishab who portrayed this culture, religious practices into the on-screen,which made all Indians feel proud. The another thing here should be appreciated is He made it with dedication &But didn't creat any HYPE or didn't make huge publicity too unlike few movies who made before release, but everybody in every area, irrespective of their language, culture, connected to this movie, automatically became Damn success!! 👌👌👏👏👍👍

In different parts of India there are different local demi gods called Kshetra (place in Sanskrit) Palaka (protector in Sanskrit) Daiva (god). In Tamilnadu there is similar tradition of Ayyanar, Karuppu Sami, at time it would be a demi goddess as well. You can say its like an Indian shaman tradition. This tradition is still prevalent in the rural parts of India where people are still rooted the soil. In this movie they have focused on south Karnataka state region called Tulunadu bordering Kerala. The belief is that the holy guardian forest sprit Panjurli (which is in the form of a wild boar) represented with yellow face paint and Guliga ( Panjurli’s associate) represented by black face paint protect the forest and the people living off of the forest. They both have different origin stories based in local folklore. Panjurli is said to have been created by Lord Shiva’s wife mother Goddess Parvathi as her pet boar in Himalayas, but it’s really naughty and Shiva hunts it down. Parvathi becomes furious and Shiva to avoid her wrath revives Panjurli’s sprit and sends him to Tulunadu region to protect the forest and its people in its sprit form. Meanwhile Guliga has a more darker origin story. Both Panjurli and Guliga have kind of sibling bond ( they fought each other onetime and then with higher divine intervention dispute was resolved and they were blessed to be as inseparable as blood siblings). Its more like classic buddy cop story of the good and bad cop. Panjurli is more people friendly approachable and is often worshipped with other deities within home. Whereas Guliga is represented in form of an irregular shaped rock often half buried below the tree within the boundary of the property said to guard the border and keep evil entities out of the property. Guliga is known for his voracious appetite and standing up for Panjurli. Hope this would help in understanding references when you eventually get to watch the movie.
Proud to be tuluva, this culture mostly happens exactly in tulunadu khudla mangalore karnataka and many other native places in coastal karnataka areas and also in few parts of kerala......

It is one of thousands of rituals across India worshipping Gods. There are many native instruments perfectly fused with Western ones. The main instrument, is completely indigenous and has different names in different Indian languages. It is generally called Shehnai, a piper. The language of the song is Sanskrit, tune is Indian classical, dance and costumes ares a version of Kadhakali, many ingenious instruments with a western touch.
Instruments used in this song making.. maybe i missed some Shahnoy, Drums, Violin, Guitar, Electric Guitar, I donno how many people gave chorus, Carnatic fusion ( I donno how many tunes) ..Finally a masterpiece.
This is the most beautiful movie I ever seen! Heart touching movie and absolutely feels like watching again and again. I’m kannadiga and now I’m so much into knowing about Panjurlidaiva and Tulu culture.
Varaha means Boar (wild Boar) which is one of the incarnations of Vishnu. This movie has some extremely deeper connotations of Sanatan dharma, rutuals, traits. The protagonist of Kabtara is Shiva, the ranger has been named as Murali (which means Vishnu). They fight and then becomes one. The represents non-duality. If you are clueless about what I said, but if this interests you. You will find out.
This is one of the gems of the movie..even though I don't understand Kannada but the song gives goosebumps. I have seen this movie yesterday and movie is excellent. I am from West India and this movie have refreshed my memories with my Lt. grandmother. When I was kid, she uses to tell me bedtime stories of our ancestor village. One of the stories was of Lord Kshetrapal dada. She told that when she was of my age (may be 5-6 years) she has experienced the presence of Lord kshetrapal (guardian of village and people). Lord use to guard the village at night and use to patrol on his white horse. They used to hear sounds of mystical bells ( ghungharoo ) tied on horse legs. No one tries to follow him or see him. As a kid I was amused by this and asked still he guards the village. She told yes but no one now experienced him after one incident. Once, a man tried to follow him and lord got disappeared at the outskirts of the village near riverbank. Now, at present there is very big temple build at the same place and whenever we use to visit our village, we use to take blessing of Lord Kshetrapal Ji. My father and uncle always narrated the incidents of thieves who never got success to cross the river before temple in taking stolen things out of village. Gramdevta , Kshetrapal or Panjurli is nothing new in our sanatan culture. Almost, every village or town in India have their Gram Devta. Majorly gram devatas are Gods like Hanumanji , Kalbharavji , or relative to supreme lord shiva. However, in many places gramdevta are goddess too. We have very reach culture, rituals and traditions in India. This is one of the stories of Kundapur village of udupi district. We have thousands of villages in India and each of the villages will have something to share. We need many more films like this.
This movie can explain power of movies media and all .. all Bollywood and all indian production house need to understand movie are a one of the strongest media for showing our culture also in correct way not adding any fakeness because indias real culture are powerful if this movie never released its take long time this culture also exist.... We need more movie like this show our hidden and real culture ..

The intro of the movie was goosebumps giving. After the intro the movie was funny with some character intros. But In the second half the real movie starts. The main character of the movie gets closer to the Bhuta Kola. AND IN THE LAST FIGHT YOU WILL GET MAD. SUPER DUPER ULTRA LEGENDARY FIGHT!!!!! THE HERO WILL GET POSSESSED BY THE DEMIGOD AND THEN YOU WILL GO IN ANOTHER TRANS

The song is for the yellow faced demi God thats the spirit of a male wild boar (guardian diety of the land or forest in the movie) along with reference to a boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Varaha.. Translation: Varaha form, the third incarnation of Lord. Vishnu, the supreme among all Gods. Varaha form, the third incarnation of Lord. Vishnu, the supreme among all Gods. He who assumes the form of a wild boar; the greatest of the demons. With teeth as hard as diamond, he who protects us like a shield. He who embodies the essence of Shiva; the one who thrives on earth. He who gives refuge to those who believe in him. The one who has won the hearts of thousands of Gods. We now stand in front of you, worshipping you.
Instruments - the orchestration and instrumentation is awesome with the 2 1/2 octave hardwood wind instrument called Nadaswara taking all our attention. It has a very intense volume and when brought together with damaru (a two faced handheld drum used for spiritual dances), koragana dolu (another percussion instrument used for theatrical performances), gaggara (anklet sounds), guitar and all other western instruments that make up an orchestra you can just imagine what it can bring out.

The drum is called dolu. The instrument is considered as auspicious. Even in temples every day morning the programmes start with sound of sannai.
Hi wow it is amazing basically varaha roopam is wild boar incarnation of lord Vishnu who saves godess earth and this boothakolam is sort of trance to be one with that God
The lyrics are the description of the diety, Varaharoopam , its the third Avatar of Vishnu, of Boar (varaha) who rescues earth from under the sea. The lyrics describe the 3rd Avatar, Varaha. This is Bhoota kola many people might describe it much better, than me, these characters, they are played by people, but spirits enter them,. these are the protectors of villages and the culture.
Actually translation is wrong panjurli is not related to God Vishnu but connected to God Shiva, all daivas are related to God Shiva. And your rest points are correct.

It's a beautiful journey
Believe me, most North, East and West Indians didn't know about all these rituals until we saw Kantara. There's a culture shock involved here too.
You come toKerala, we will show you sevrallike this.. Kantara "Varaha - a Daiva Kola"
These are practised pan India, it’s part of Hinduism, it’s there from Mahabharata period.
speak for the urban population bro.
Wherever there is Devi Worship, there exists similar rituals.

Well explained..... Credits to you for your time to explain
Good outline for him.
its not related to vishnus avatar VARAHA ROOPAM was given to represent panjurli since its boar form similar to lord vishnu varaha form, its just a sanskrit word
didnt know all this. thanks
Thanks brother for this information
This is not any movie, it’s an emotion…experience unbeatable …Jai Varaha 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Rock + Folk = 🤘

Proud to be Tuluva❤️
In Tulunadu we worship daiva (Demi Gods),more then gods

Hi wow it is amazing basically varaha roopam is wild boar incarnation of lord Vishnu who saves godess earth and this boothakolam is sort of trance to be one with that God
The lyrics are the description of the diety, Varaharoopam , its the third Avatar of Vishnu, of Boar (varaha) who rescues earth from under the sea.
The lyrics describe the 3rd Avatar, Varaha.
This is Bhoota kola many people might describe it much better, than me, these characters, they are played by people, but spirits enter them,. these are the protectors of villages and the culture.
