Yeah, I think so too. Charles wanted to be with Camilla. Even after they divorced, Diana still posed to much of a threat. She was too beloved, too special, too sparkling. Camilla and Charles simply couldn't compete.

@@katebrady2002 there’s no such thing as an independent royal, they’re following rules in fear that monarchy will come to an end soon. She knew this was pretty much an arraigned marriage. She just didn't want Charles to embarrass her in public this way. She fantasized that they were a couple that was in love but she and Charles only met on about 12 occasions prior to this announcement of their engagement. If you read the book by Charles's Valet Stephan Barry who was there during the courtship, Diana as his other girlfriends were basically auditioning to be chosen. He said she was very good at not putting a wrong foot forward and when she was about to make a mistake Barry would clear his throat and she picked up on the signals quite early. Camilla helped Charles choose which girlfriend he should marry. Diana, wanted to be chosen so she pretended to be the meek mouse who wouldn't say a word about his relationship with Camilla. That was part of the test. Camilla was always with them during the courtship conducted at country house weekends. Stephen Barry said usually Camilla's husband would drive Diana back to London Sunday nights and Charles and Camilla would stay on in the country longer without them. Diana thought she could win Charles love over Camilla, but that didn't happen.

They were both victims. Charles was forced to marry someone who he doesn't love because he loves someone else. And poor Diana who believed Charles will eventually learn to love her when they get married. Both were in painful situation here.
You are absolutely right. Charles had been raised to forget his own needs and desires and to make life decisions based on his duty as a future King. He though he was doing the right thing. Diana being an aristocrat, he though she would have understood that aristocratic and royal marriages were almost never love matches and that privately they would carry on with the one they loved.
His throne mattered to him more than his so called "love" Camilla. He could've left his place as the heir, if he loved her as much as he claimed. He certainly didn't have to marry Diana then cheat on her constantly!
In an interview, Diana in Her own Words, she talks about this moment. The "whatever love means" response, Diana never forgot that. You can see on her face that deep down her heart starts to break even though she hasn't actually processed it yet. And the spiral down began. #RIPPRINCESSDIANA queen of hearts.❤
She was such a mature elegant 19-year-old here I wouldn’t of even guessed she was 19 I would’ve guessed she was in her 20s with how poised she is and her answers are so proper
If my fiancé answered with "Well whatever love means really" I'd be completely devastated. Poor Princess Diana! I believe Prince Charles "Liked" her, but didn't "love" her as she clearly loved him. I think he "maybe" was pushed by the royal family to get married.
I agree w/ all you said. In the documentary by Ann Curry, Diana stated herself, on film, that she was "absolutely traumatized" when he made that idiotic comment about love.
***** Selma, normally I would agree with you. However in Diana's case, she was engaged to Prince Charles...all eyes were on her (them), this was big news, the world was getting to know her & anxiously awaiting their fairytale wedding...combined w/ the fact that she was so young & naive...IMO she was probably taken off-guard by the comment as well as embarrassed & crushed. He was probably her 1st serious boyfriend! I can see why she, given the circumstances, may feel traumatized....just my opinion.
@irwin zapata He certainly didn't love and never respected her though. Maybe he was attracted to her, or thought she was cute or something but he didn't care about her. He treated her like garbage.
This is just so sad. She truly loved him. And he did not. Incredibly unfair. Her life ended and he went on to marry the third party in their marriage. Just breaks my heart. She deserved so much better. All the love she gave and not be given the same in return is heartbreaking.
I remember this interview when it first came out (showing my age) and that “whatever being in love means” comment really struck me at the time. Another thing was how he proposed and gave her 3 weeks to think it over; the fact that he thought she might need it is a bad sign. Charles actually seems quite upbeat in this interview, and yet he was apparently in tears on the eve of the wedding.
I know right. She should have been planning her escape route right at that moment! lol But I guess the temptation of wealth, fame and being the Princess of Wales was just too much for her to give up aspiring to.
If you look closely at her face at that point she looks as though he had slapped her, it was just a terrible thing to say. He should have never, never married her and they both would have had happier lives.
cazfarri The interviewer had to school him a little on what it means to be in love. His horrible self still had the nerve to say “whatever your interpretation of being in love means”. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this. I’m in shock. Poor Diana 😢💔
He never loved her. The house of Windsor destroyed her. They thought she was going to be a young naive girl who just went along with them and their rules but she was a break out star. They were jealous and couldn't handle her being the star of the family.
How about having consideration for what Charles wanted!! He did not want to be with Diana and we should all feel sympathy for Charles. How DARE you feel sympathy for Diana!!!!! Charles is the one that matters!!!! We should all feel sad for poor Charles for not being able to marry the woman HE WANTS TO MARRY!!!!!! Diana's feelings mean nothing!!!! ''Whatever in love means'' wtf kind of answer is that? That was a huge red flag, poor Di missed it or dismissed it. She was such light and love, she was too good for him, that family and this horrible world. She is still missed.
Diana said she had said the "Whatever love means" comment previously, but they both felt it was too late to back out. They both felt they would be humiliated to back out of the wedding once announced.
I love her dreamy-eyed innocent look in her early 20s, like a character out of a romance novel. And, because it’s the years before it all got complicated with the marriage. I prefer to remember her that way; happy. (Except we wouldn’t have had the pleasure of knowing her, then)
She was a perfect wife? She said she tried to commit suicide three times and at least one of the attempts she was pregnant with William. She had issues and was way to young at 19 to marry. She was not a perfect wife. Plus what kind of mother gives an interview where she tells how she tried to kill herself when she was pregnant with William. William had to hear that interview and know his mom tried to kill herself when pregnant with him. Talk about damaging your child....
Sherry Caraway he shouldn't have have married a 19yo idealistic girl while in love with another woman and then treated his wife so badly. Being in love with someone indifferent towards you and doing anything for their attention makes one a bit crazy, espescially a very young woman. She eventually grew to be a great woman who still had her share of demons. Princess Diana was a wonderful woman, fantastic mother- and had she been treated properly- a perfect wife.
You can't blame suicide attempts on another person. The suicide attempts are a manipulation used by mentally imbalanced people. They try to hold the other person hostage. They are basically saying if you don't do what I say I will kill myself. That behavior makes the other person love you even less and want to be around them less because it's a disgusting way to try to control someone. (Also they weren't real suicide attempts they were just manipulations) People who really want to kill themselves do so.

I didn’t like how weird the actress who plays Diana did this scene in The Crown. Her eyes and head movements were too creepy and excessive, almost laughable. She needed to tone it down a bit
Yes. That was cringeworthy. It was overdone. It wasn't that slow in real life plus the camera work put too much emphasis on it with the close ins. I think they wanted to highlight this pivotal part but instead made it look weird with the attempt at Diana's coy look. It's not something that can truly be replicated. I knew of the story well way before the crown and know this clip well so I I kept saying about the actress, "It was not like that." She's good, but that scene didn't sit well with me.
Ya, you can see what they were trying to capture. Diana's does subtly tilt her head and such, but it was all a bit much in the show TBH. However, it is a drama after all with about 70% historical accuracy and 30% drama
Interesting how Netflix rephrased some quotes to make it more appropriate for today's general perspective. They switched "thinking what a very jolly and amusing and attractive sixteen years old she was" with "...and Diana was still quite young then. She was very original and lots of fun ".
@@WorldsEliteBloodrang I am not in any way a royalist, but if you dig just a little deeper into the royal family history you'd find out that Charles is not that horrible piece of scum he has been portrayed to be. He was an ambitious and imaginative person forced to be a borish, non-thinking future heir (that is why I think that monarchy should be abolished, since it doesn't benefit anybody but avid gossip seekers). You have to cut him some slack, he was undeniably horrible to her, and I do not condone his behaviour, but maybe he should just be put in perspective. Given that the monarchy is here to stay, I always believed Anne would have been more suited for the throne. She has a far stronger personality and integrity. Charles just wanted to lead a life with a purpose set by himself, and couldn't because of his birth!

Because he just stands there makes him an ass. Not seeing the connection. He is affectionate and well-mannered throughout the interview. He was also a man in his thirties at the time. Men in their thirties don't jump around like nineteen-year-old girls.
It's odd that now in hindsight as I watch this video, I see that Prince Charles clearly lets it be known that he is not in love with her......and you can see the hurt, shock & embarrassment on Diana's face when he answers the interviewer's question with "whatever in love means", her face turns beet red. So very sad......
I believe Diana loved Charles but he surely did not love her. She was so beautiful and kind. The perfect princess. He was a dork not to love Diana and he should have taken great care of her. If he had she would probably still be here. 😪😪
I think Diana was in love with her fantasy of Charles. They didn't know each other. ~~~~~ Some of Diana's comments from a different source paint a different picture. She said she wanted to marry Charles because she believed he couldn't divorce her. Diana suffered from depression, low self esteem, and self destructive behaviors including bulimia before she met Charles. The cause of her mental problems was likely her extremely unhappy childhood. Diana's mother abandoned her childern when Diana was age 6. Diana was the 3rd daughter and her parents were disappointed because they needed a son to inherit the family estate and fortune. I suspect when her younger brother was born Diana was ignored. Diana said she felt unwanted and unloved. She was heartbroken as a young child. Her parents fought, she saw her father hit her mother, their marriage was toxic and they divorced in when Diana was 7 or 8.

Yes. Too much pressure. She became a wife, princess, most famous woman in the world and a mother within 1 years time. Too much pressure for a teenager.

Do note that during the disintegration of his marriage to Princess Diana, Princess Diana never took an ounce of responsibility for it. As far as she was concerned, everything was her husband's fault. She constantly portrayed herself as the victim. Do you know Prince Charles' side of the story? I doubt it. That's because he was mum throughout. Those who came after The Crown’s episode.... 🤚🏼 The actress’ acting is absolutely incredible!!
Yes, I thought the actress was being very shy and awkward but now I see she's doing a perfect portrayal.
I think the portrayal is extremely caricaturish. There is an elegance and awkwardness here.. But the performance misses this for attempting to copy and results instead in a cartoonish portrayal. These are 2 iconic real life people and I imagine it is difficult... But it's unacceptable that the actors this season are mimicking (badly) rather than bringing their own to the performance.

I remember this interview when it first came out (showing my age) and that “whatever being in love means” comment really struck me at the time. He treated her like garbage but he was always in love with Camilla.
Sherry Caraway charles drove diiana to suicide attempts.

@@Beautiful-Sickening-Rolex She was already rich, her father was an Earl. Diana has got her own apartment at the age of 19. I would not describe someone with that kind of background a gold digger.
I actually came here right after watching this same interview on The Crown, only to be sure that he said "whatever in love means". HEARTBREAKING. 😭😭😭💔
I hate Charles, honestly he is so undeserving of her
I totally agree. She's was a beautiful young woman who deserved someone who really loved her.
He was so jealous of her popularity too. Horrible individual.
I concur!
Then why she agree to marry him.
Because she was young and didn’t know the entire family was using her! She was a target and deserved better!
Well I feel pity for both of them..Charles loved someone he couldn't b with either at that point of time...he was probably in conflict too...He is a human too
She looks SO NERVOUS in this interview! All of the scrutiny must have been overwhelming! She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside~I'll always love her & miss her!
She was an extremely shy person. Rather adorable.
Who has arrived here because of the most recent season of The Crown on Netflix?
I just got done watching season 4 of the Crown in one day.
Yep lol
guilty as charged
Charles:"What did you think of me?"
Diana:"Pretty Amazing"
She didn't have any idea back then🥺
Wow she was soooo pretty!! Just a beautiful lady!
You can definitely tell William and Harry are actually in love with their wives. Unlike their father 🙄
Wilma certainly Is.
True
So does the Queen and Prince Philip. Prince Charles does love Camila but their love fuck up!
Can’t believe he did learn to love her
Didnt William cheat on her recently?
That house that’s “close to people” was actually close to his mistress ugh I hate him so much
what is wrong with you? bet you're the type of person who posts, 'be kind' crap and here you are spewing hatred about a man you barely know about and probably formed an opinion about through a tv show.
Diana was no saint either. She was adulterous too.
lol he literally said "near the Duchy of Cornwall area."
guess who the Duchess of Cornwall is.
@@Matthew-cw3gn Camilla is the Duchess of Cornwall, and she has that title because she's now married to Prince Charles, who is the Duke of Cornwall. She was not Duchess of Cornwall back then.
The fact that Princess Diana lived on her own in that big ass royal house without any support from the royal family is quite a big deal itself....i would have shat in my pants three times if it were me. Respect for the beautiful lady.
Charles on when he realized she was the one: "It was a gradual business."
Well he better say that
She was 16 for god sakes yikes
@@aden5625 the use of the word 'business' doesn't bode well...
I didn’t like how weird the actress who plays Diana did this scene in The Crown. Her eyes and head movements were too creepy and excessive, almost laughable. She needed to tone it down a bit
Her voice was also off...like different from the rest of the time she played diana
🤣🤣🤣🤣 o thought it was only me to notice that! Very creepy!
Exactly she looked creepy almost
Yes!! Just noticed that too.
whatever it takes to make Charles seem more likable than he actually is
@@melissamayaa He’s supposed to be likeable?
@@WorldsEliteBloodrang I am not in any way a royalist, but if you dig just a little deeper into the royal family history you'd find out that Charles is not that horrible piece of scum he has been portrayed to be. He was pushed into this marriage, and he was completely lost.
I think The Crown’s portrayal of PC is pretty fair. He was miserable in his upbringing causing him to do what he did. A rather tragic character in his own right but doesn’t excuse all of his actions
When I close my eyes and listen, I realise how much of a good job Josh O'Connor did in protraying Charles in The Crown. The way he speaks..
i’ve just watched this scene on the crown, and WOW the portrayal was incredible!
You can tell by his body language he’s not emotionally invested in the relationship. She was invested, but just very very shy.
She was just a teenager who didn't deserve to be treated so badly 😭 She was a gem of a person ❤️ Miss you Princess Di ❤️😭

Since when 20 is supposed to be a teen?
@@marinamarine7159 they first met and he showed interest in her when she was 16 and he was 29 and their formal relationship began when she was 18 so yes a teenager
@@reillyoatridge6497 He met her when she was 16 and noticed her as amusing - but he was not dating her. He started to date her wehn she was 19..
@@marinamarine7159 she was 19 in this interview…
At that time, Charles was battling rumors about his sexuality. His former girlfriends described their relationship as completely platonic. Charles, his family, tabloids were desperated to arrange a bride for him, he needed someone very naive. All his previous grfds had turned him down.
nonsense
When I was a young Bride years ago, I suffered through a rocky loveless marriage, as well. I felt her sadness on a very personal level. Many people, including myself watched the Royal Wedding and we all had high hopes for the Royal couple's blissful future. It was not to be, for them or for my Marriage. When she passed away. I cried n cried. I'm a Native American Woman. Traditionally, when we're in mourning we cut our hair to show that were sad and suffered a great loss of a loved one. Well, she's not my relative, but I did cut my hair for her. I was shocked and saddened along with the rest of the world. RIP Beautiful, kind Lady. You will live in our hearts forever.
+jenniefromtheblock Your post has me tearing up. Thank you so much for sharing. I, too, loved Diana and wanted for her and Prince Charles to be happy. Oh how I wish she were still here; can't you just imagine how wild she would be about George and Charlotte?
She's watching from the spirit-world.

Ooooooo 👻
jenniefromtheblock44 your message was very touching. I'm from a tribe in Scottsdale (saltriver) I am 37 years old and my whole life I've been growing my hair for my grandpa.
What a beautiful tribute. I hope you are blessed and happy now in your life.
Holy crap he did actually say "whatever in love means". Damn. He didn't even try to hide it.
He was literally saying‘WHATEVER’ 😳😳
@@Khloe_dancer_model if he was literally saying whatever, then he would have said, Whatever.
I mean love can mean many things, it could mean romance or it could mean intense sexual intercourse.
He did know what love meant because he was in love with camila.
0:11 this is the ring that William gave to Kate Middleton and wears now. Beautiful ring
What's For Tea? Yes is it.
What's For Tea? The ring was ordered from a catalog.
‘one day you could be queen’ that day would never come unfortunately 💔
He treated her so shabbily.
Gosh, I really don't like him. Just by the way they were walking in the beginning of the video, She's all jumpy and blushing and excited and you can tell she's in love, and he's just standing there like an ass that doesnt deserve what he has...oh wait, no, he IS an ass that didnt deserve what he had.
The whole concept of royalty is to create asses who are narcissists and only their wants and needs are attended to.
Because he just stands there makes him an ass. Not seeing the connection. He is affectionate and well-mannered throughout the interview. He was also a man in his thirties at the time. Men in their thirties don't jump around like nineteen-year-old girls.
He is a man in love who was force to marry someone else. If HE was the princess who is force to marry a other man, everybody would found it romantic.
Never seen two engaged people so little in love with each other. It's sad.
Covid 19...

Some of Diana's comments from a different source paint a different picture.
