A 1980s TV ad for then leading cigarette brand Sportsman, manufactured by BAT(Kenya). It was trying to whip up national appeal with a flavour of the country's favourite game, football.
I sang this way back in the '80's, and it was prodded at Andrew Crawford Productions. Music was by Matthew Peevers. There was a version in kiswahili as well, which was originally sung by one Captain Victor of the Police Band, but inexplicably re-recorded by yours truly. Happy times! :) Can't believe I ever endorsed cigarettes, though...
I'm surprised! I wonder why I never became a smoker cause I've heard this advert since I was around 4 or 5 years old and still fresh in my mind even now! 😁😁
I love the Kiswahili version better. "Kuna sigara moja tuu, Kenya maarufu kama kandanda... SPORTSMAN!!! Ni sawa hasa, number 1. KANDANDA!! Ni sawa hasa, number 1."
Nimeamini blueband ya kitambo na ya siku hizi zinaonja the same..this sportsman sawa hasa was sweater back then i dont know why i havent got the feelings i used to.mayb i am the one who has changed
Watching from 2017 July. The campaign took advertising and customization on their packaging to a new point. For the consumer guide now from all their advertisement it can only wraps up in less time about all the advertisement left unmentioned.
this is just brilliant .. another great advert was the SM one, anyone know how to track that one down.. friends on a boat handing out SMs, and the tag line was SM the cool way to make friends… Any idea who produced that ? thanks

Indeed the Kenyan ad archives are truly grateful for your great work. Still find myself humming to this tune every so often...🎶Sawa hasa 🎶
Amazing. Do you know where one could get access to the Kiswahili version?

I lack words to express how i feel right now! Man back in the day!
Do you have a link for the Swahili version?
Mary Omangi: I have looked for it, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

This Sportsman Cigarette Advert will be forever interesting for more than a decade, and Range Rover shown was very Popular on the Road.
Fantastic..
Music was created by one Peter Colmore I think. The genius behind Aspro, Sanyo and other jingles from 60s, 70s and 80s.
If we can find and access his works, please do give the rest of us a shout. Or can they start an online channel for the same?
Awesome

In the States, it is illegal to.advertise cigs on TV
Haha, memories!
Hahaha, advert ya kifwaka
It is a good thing cigarette ads were banned on tv...
Sportsman, number one killer. Btw how do you mix up cigarette smoking with sports? One is healthy the other is not, what an irony that was
hahaha its funny to realize how societies priorities were misplaced by such glorification of cigarette smoking in the 80's ...anyway,tumetoka mbali.
