      I'm not a very technical person(so I have no idea what i'm talking about) but for the modules for Windows 8+ they don't seem to have buttons, so should I just use someone else's PC that's running Windows 7 to write everything to the original sound module?

    Various notes/observations as I'm putting one of these together for a con next month (see you at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo! Maybe! Probably not.)
    --------
    -no luck finding a suitable recorder at thrift stores, but eBay has tons of players. Ideally look for broken ones being sold as-is since they usually are being sold for next to nothing and you'll be gutting it out anyway. You'll want something with big chunky high-travel mechanical buttons, the slim low-profile ones likely won't be able to register down to press the sound cue buttons.
    -*BEWARE*: If you don't get exactly the player in the video you'll likely need to flex your improvisational muscles to get everything working. I got a GE brand recorder (slightly anachronistic since it was released in the early 90s but w/e) and it turns out the buttons are part of the internal mechanics, rather than part of the plastic chassis like the one in the video. I had to pry off the plastic button caps , assemble a little platform out of bass wood with the sound module buttons glued on that I then cemented underneath the button opening, and cement the original button caps back into place
    -In addition to the 4-button sound module I also ordered a mini amplifier module from the same site. It has a bigger slightly louder/clearer speaker that friction-fit perfectly into the socket of the original recorder's speaker, and the longer cable made it a bit easier to fit everything into the enclosure. It uses an idiot-proof headphone jack that plugs into the sound module, but keep in mind it uses its own 3xAA battery pack.
    -I don't recommend gluing down the sound module, being able to plug the USB in for tweaks when testing the finished assembly is a lifesaver. I do suggest gluing down the battery packs if you can though, they're heavy and you don't want them swinging around and possibly damaging a wire.
    -For some reason the sound module keys are NOT arranged in numerical order, but as K2-K1-K3-K4. Just something to keep in mind when organizing sound clips
    -The library of clips in the description are a pain to sort through (there's a looooooot of redundant duplicate ones to sift out) but you really want to find the clearest voice samples you can since they generally register as a sharp unintelligible buzzing mess really, really easily when played back. The samples that break into foreign languages seem especially bad for this. You may want to tweak down the gain of clips in Audacity or something similar to see if it helps. Again, being able to plug your sound module back in for tweaking things is pretty important.
    -I set up K2 with a few 'hello's , K1 as various voice lines, and K3 as 'thanks'/'goodbye'. Because the soundtrack is such a big part of HM, I also set up K4 with about half a dozen 5-10 second snippets of various HM/HM2 tracks (and the Robocop theme from the C64 video game, because why not) with cassette scratch effects from the sound clips folder added in for more of an analog effect. Again you'll want to tweak a bit with the gain to get audio to come out suitably loud without getting distorted
    -As far as I can tell there's no way to randomize sound clips on each button, so try to mix clips up so it doesn't seem too repetitive.
    -Not a bad idea to glue the cassette door shut, don't want to look silly having it accidentally pop open on you. Also, a slim belt clip cemented to the back of the player will let you keep it on you and leave your hands free for holding weapons, viscera, ironically-girly japanese merch from the anime booth, etc.
    -------
    That's all that really comes to mind. "Easy" isn't really an accurate description especially if you're not using exactly what's being used for the video, but it's been an interesting little project. Haven't had a chance to even get started with the mask yet...

    • @phanpny97
      @phanpny97 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey man i was wondering if you would share your cut down sound files? im gonna start making my own soon and wanted to see what you had as far as those files. also for the mask they sell a identical mask to the one he wears in PD2 on ebay for around like 20$ would highly recommend it, though it is like rubber material and kinda hard to see though but def worth it!

      NotADamSaw the windows 10 ones take SD cards, some require soldering, others not. You'll have to be sure to measure them for your cassette-player to make sure it all fits.

    Hey Mori, I've been looking at some alternatives and I thought about actually editing cassette tapes for the reader, is that possible? I mean if so I just wanna know why you chose this method

    • @MoriAnimations
      @MoriAnimations  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you can create custom cassette tapes using MP3 to cassette devices, as well as using the recorder itself. I chose this method as it's able to be used as a conversational piece. I communicated with people during the convention with this and was able to reply using the programmed buttons, just like Jacket in game. A lot harder with the actual tapes but if that's the way you wanna do it, go for it!

    • @UnusualRoo
      @UnusualRoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, I might as well give it a shot! It's just that I might create the one you have in another time, but I don't think I have the funds for delivery and all since it all adds up to quite the bunch as it is from the US, to be delivered to the UK, So I Looked up some Cassette players and empty cassettes I wanna buy, adding the audio logs onto them, I just thought I'd maybe go old school style ;) Anyway, thanks! And I am gonna make the one you made, just when I can afford the delivery shenanigans x)
