This is my favorite Christmas movie. This singing and dancing is classic Hollywood at it's finest. The best Christmas movie moment is when general Waverly sees all of his men at the end of the movie come out and he is trying not to cry but he's just so moved. Gets me every time

Some of the greatest musical numbers ever put on film were influenced by minstrel shows. This number, Franklin D Roosevelt Jones from Babes on Broadway and Bojangles of Harlem from Swing Time. You people need to grow up and realize these shows were an important part of America's entertainment history. No matter how many people tell you they were politically incorrect. Think for yourselves for once instead of parroting others.

As a huge Vera-Ellen fan, and always loving the arrangement of Mandy she danced to here, now I look back and breathe a small sigh of relief they didn't end up going with the usual blackface route and stereotypical racist dialect that defined so many such Hollywood numbers. Yes, it's the most blatantly racist entertainment form in our history, but at least they boiled it down to just great music and dance. Yeah, the watermelon theme is a subtle racist relic, but I actually didn't realize they were watermelon tambourine faces til now. I just thought they were glamour faces with glitter. Kind of looking like John Waters' Divine more than anything else. And I always thought the red and green outfits were because this was a Christmas film. But at least the woke era cringe factor is lower than what you'd expect. Try watching the 'wholesome' Mickey and Judy films....half end on a minstrel show, with Mickey's hammy over the top pickaninny character alone making you want to squirm til your soul bursts. And it's mixed with the most amazing singing and dancing talent that could be assembled. And you just shake your head, wondering how or if you can enjoy the venerable and hate the deplorable, mixed so tight.

Why oh why did they have to do a whitewashed version of a minstrel show? There are obvious references to the reacist parts of the show including the song "Mammy" and the watermelon colored outfits on the men and red sequin dresses on the woman as a racist stereotype of blacks eating watermelon. If you are going to do a minstrel show, then do a minstrel show blackface and all. Offensive yes, but this whitewashed version is more offensive. Think about it.

Ha! Watermelon never entered my mind. I just took the red and green as "Christmas colors." Meanwhile, all the well-tanned, curly-haired, Italian-looking guys seemed quite the casting coincidence. (I wonder if that "look" was specified in the script for the "minstrel show" scene.) It's sick and sad how fifty years of Hollywood kept tipping its hat to the fifty years of blackface "minstrelsy" entertainment that came before vaudeville and movies, without admitting that it was being nostalgic about overt racism. Fortunately, this weird whitewashed number was about the last gasp of that bit of "nostalgia" in Hollywood productions, although British (!) TV kept its "Black and White Minstrel Show" going through most of the 1970s.

It’s the 1950s. Do you think they gave a shit? Besides, regardless of the racial history behind it, it’s still a good number.
