I used to say ta and cheers a lot, but after I finished uni and went into working in front of house in the museums sector I stopped completely. Everyone understands it and it just sounds better and more professional in a working environment.
Whatever happened to the term "goodbye"? A lady I'd only spoken to on the phone for five minutes said "Take care" at the end of our conversation. Take care of what? Did she know something about my future health that I didn't?
i always say thank you when people hold the door open for me ans yes it makes me angry when people don't show the same courtesy to me. But I will say I always do a nervous laugh when I say thank you and go a bright shade of red so I don't know what that says about me!
Just a note to all you Cheers. people, Most foreigners have no idea that Cheers means 'thank you'. It is thought by all my dago friends, that Cheers, means 'to your health'; as in the drik toast. . That it means Thank You would leave most foreign people thinking that the person may not be grateful for some thing, when they say that. o0o
This is obviously a class issue. Different things are considered polite in different sections of society. This guy would be considered very rude in many social circles, as he is stuck up, stiff and passive aggressive.
