- Hey everyone, welcome to the second video of 2024 and this is something I have wanted to do for such a long time. I sleep downstairs in the van during the winter (its warmer) and the bed has just been super uncomfortable. Time for a change and I hope you like watching the process.

Trick is to put the foam into a large polythene bag or wrap with cling film then that lets you slide the foam in easier and just pull out the polythene/wrap. Great work!!
What an ace idea, that would have made it so much easier 🤣🤣!

Good job mate looks like a good quality finish, I recently changed our mattress got a quote from a specialist to cut to size they wanted around £400😮 got one from IKEA and like you cut shape out like you did with bread knife😅 well happy with result and comfort level and only cost me £130 and a bit if my time. I have no idea why mattress are so expensive when you take cover off its a few inches of memory foam and a lump of foam. With your saved space my j suggest filling it with more beer fire wood and pot noodles 😂 enjoy your next camp we enjoy your vlogs.
Which IKEA mattress please? I asked my original bed supplier if they did a harder grade of foam, they said no. And also was £400 to redo!

I did similar on my crafter making individual headboards out of an old memory foam mattress for the back doors.

My old rock & roll bed used to destroy my back after a couple of nights even with a mattress topper so that was one of the reasons to get a van and fit a fixed bed but you have probably done the best thing here
I can’t comment as I have a rib so sleep on the back of the seat, without the seatbelts. I do have an amazing topper though that I love. It does take up a load of space. Looks like an excellent job and I hope you enjoy it😊
Great idea but the mattress foam looks better than what's in your seats. You'll have to see if it was worth going all out with the foam 😊
Looks like you’ve done a cracking job Col but I think you just added more normal foam. It looked like the mattress foam you didn’t use was the memory foam!
I have a little micro camper , the padding for the bed is on the thin side ,so i use my camping inflatable pad , works a treat :)

I carry a 2 inch memory foam topper in the pop top - it is laid on the board upstairs and fits snuggly in the gap between the board and the roof top. I have used it for years, and just pop it on to the bed each night to make for a home from home sleeping unit.
Good to see Michelle bringing you Xmas cake and coffee - impressed that your Xmas cake has lasted this long. Ours went weeks ago.

That's ace, yeah we did have one very similar (in fact we still have it but it's in the camping cupboard now) as in winter when I'm solo camping I don't pop the top (to keep the heat in) so it would be a massive e faff (for me) to have to pop the top up and down again just to get the topper out 🤣...
@@Yorkshirepoptopadventures, We use our T5 all year and in all weathers and we put the pop top up but at night we pull the upper bunk down and pull its mattress forward to close the access hole off this keeps the heat in and means the diesel heater runs less often saving fuel and battery levels then in the morning just push the bunk up to get dressed etc 👍🏻🇬🇧

The big downside I can see, is that with the seats now being the mattress topper, condensation will occur within the seat squabs on colder nights and not in a more removable, disposable and air able seperate mattress topper, that inevitably occurs from body perspiration and thus may damage the seat / bed squabs themselves over time, leading to mold in the seat squabs.
Yeah you could be right. I've planned to drill holes in the bottom of the seat to let any moisture evaporate. A friend of mine who "does upholstery" 🤣 said that it was a good idea to introduce the holes.
Having said that, we've slept on the bed without a topper many times without issue (maybe just lucky though)
But a good point to raise for those watching the video and reading the comments

Sorry but you should of used all of the old bed in my opinion. It looks way more comfortable.
I did think about it, but it was way too thick and I'd have needed more material to cover the seats as the mattress was a lot thicker and I'm lazy 😂

No matey, I bought the single self inflating mattress for when I'm in the pop top... the double version is massive and takes up loads of room. I did look at that first though but it was £150 and my DIY cost me nothing 🤣🤣 #yorkshireman 🤣
