Just now getting into your videos, it's been awesome and I feel like I've been missing out. Your videos are probably the best luthier type videos on TH-cam.
The way to you take every aspect of a guitar's repair so personally reminds me of a repair shop I once had which had the exact same attitude. They had me test a guitar after a setup and while there was a miniscule amount of buzz, I said it was "good enough". The second I said that, the owner of the shop almost snatched the guitar out of my hand saying "Good enough isn't good enough" and wouldn't let me leave till the guitar was playing perfectly for me. Sadly I had to move cities so don't go to that shop anymore, but perfectionists like you and them are the only people who I want working on my guitars.

New viewer here! Fellow Trekker! This was a fantastic series! It was basically taking NCC-1701 to space dock after its 5 year mission and giving it a proper refit. As long as it doesn’t end up the way that thing did, (scorching into the atmosphere of Genesis) Kyle should get many years of enjoyment!
Oh my word Mike … I didn’t know that about the Trem Lock. You truly are the Offset Guru. You should be so very proud of the outstanding work you did on this. I have a feeling Kyle thinks every minute of waiting was worth it.
Another excellent use of the lock button is to keep you in tune if you alternate between standard and drop tunings (my band is about 50-50 between e flat & drop c#). Really helps not having to do a lengthy tuning session every time you want to drop that low string!
As I told you before, I wish you got ahold of every offset Fender on the planet so that you can continue to make this series. Cheers Mike, you're so cool.

HI Mike, I sand as far as 1000 depending on the wood for fret boards. Brazilian rosewood you can stop at 600, indian rosewoods that's super dark, I go until you start almost polishing it. Then when you polish the frets with the buffer and red rosin... it looks appropriate...
Good to know! Yeah, I suffer from not having a buffing wheel, but sanding to 600 at least seems to be what works for me. I've been reading more and more forum posts about stopping at 320 and I just can't! Thanks for the input!
@@Puisheen for Fret Boards, I use a small wheel on a high RPM hand drill.... you can get MOST rosewoods and variants pretty shiny. Some Brazilian rosewood will never polish/burnish due to it's sort of soft nature and waxy/oily structure.
Cut a piece off a rough leather belt and burnish it on the fretboard. It gives it more of that played in shine after some elbow grease. I went as far as around 2000grit a while back and finished with the belt (kinda like strapping a knife) and it’s still like a mirror!
It’s surprising just how natural those low strings sound when played in the higher registers. Only possible from the careful approach to each step of restoration along the way by a concerned tech!

This series has been really informative, I just got a classic vibe Jazzmaster last week. Will do some set up work on it. It’s not too bad, the frets need a polish, new vibrato, intonation set and shim etc. looking forward to it. I’m ok with the pick ups for now.

Hey thanks a lot! Which Z-file do you use? I've heard from a few techs/luthiers that the centered file is their daily driver and I'm thinking of picking up one of those as well
@@Puisheen I'm actually using the original offset file. I like the ability to slowly work each side and get that oh so sweet thin little line at the top of the frets. I would like to try the centered one also, so maybe I'll get one the next time I do a Stew Mac order. I'm legally blind, so these Z files are what I call adaptive tools. I just did my Wolfgang Special (Miami Blue :) ) and it is amazing now!
When ever the g string bridge ground is shown I picture a salesman at a music store in an attempt to explain the reason why this new jaguar is Leo's crown jewel in hard body eletric guitars... and peppered into the pitch where multiple circuits and words at the time are being used like a strangle switch.. and I always hope the phrase revolutionary new bridge grounding technique is used...

Loved this series! The 61's looking and sounding amazing. Wish you could give my '65 Musicmaster II the same attention, and would love to know it's providence. All original bar one tuner as far as I can tell. It was olympic white. 56 years later it's of course nicotine yellow 😅. It's such a tatty mutt! Sadly it's on the other side of the ocean 😄.

Super cool rendition of “Pure Imagination”. What is your opinion on the Fender Pure 65 pickups. Would they sound better with 250k pots. I just got an MIJ 60s traditional JM and it makes me want to sell all my other guitars, because it just disappears when I play. Stratocaster, Tele, Casino just feel so crammed neck-wise sitting down. Which is how I play 95% of the time. Also, how much to refret a CIJ Jaguar nowadays? 20 years old and played to hell

Quick Q: Which position is "locked" and which are you supposed to switch to during a string break? Never used it much, but it's a great feature. Also... just gotta shout out that amazing version of Pure Imagination. That tone is to die for.

Locked is when it's slid into place, limiting the upper range of motion of the vibrato. It's best to leave it disengaged during normal use

this might be a stupid question, but what happens if a string breaks while the trem lock is already engaged? does it just stay in tune?
There's nowhere for the vibrato to go with the lock engaged, but if you have it engaged during normal use you're limiting the range of the thing
