Learn to tie the Marlinspike (or Marlingspike) Hitch - a useful knot for making rope ladders, hanging hammocks or pulling hard on light line without the rope cutting into your hands. Many uses for this easy to tie, strong, reliable and versatile knot! #knots #rope #tying

Alright so today on Repairs101 I’ve got this really great knot for you. It’s called the Marling Spike Hitch and it’s an old sailors knot used to hold onto a marling spike or a similar tool - you can use a wrench or a screwdriver. The idea of the hitch is that it gives you a really solid purchase point in the line to heave against - so you can pull really hard without hurting your hand. It’s also really great for creating a temporary rope ladder like you’d use for - I don’t know - a tree house or something.
So you know I always pronounced it Marlinspike because I thought it was in reference to a marlin fish’s spear. But it turns out that the Marlin’s spear is actually named in reference to the Marlinspike.
Now I wouldn’t trust a rope ladder made like this on the side of a ship or anywhere hazardous, really, but if you need a really easy temporary ladder that allows you to quickly reclaim the rope - then this is how it’s tied.
Alright here’s what I was talking about, you know, you need to pull tight on a light line and it cuts right into your hand.
But using a marlinspike or another tool will increase your pulling power and prevent injury.
So you create a crossing turn. You turn that upwards to cover the standing part of the line and then you weave through the marlinspike.
Now, you see how the binding knot is on the bottom. If you accidentally tie it upside down the knot won’t hold, it will just run apart and spill itself on you.
OK so make a crossing turn, fold it up on the standing part or the load end of the line and then weave your tool through over, under and over again.
So you create a crossing turn, you turn it upwards to cover the standing part of the line - that’s the line that’s loaded up - and then you weave the marlinspike through.
Alright thanks for watching and - hey! Don’t forget to subscribe!
While shipboard working the gulf oil spill, I learned that wrapping the rope around your hand to get a better grip, is a big time "no no". It's a good way to badly injure your hand. That is the real reason for this knot. By attaching a tool, you can easily free yourself of the line if something goes wrong, in addition to providing more grip.
Your videos are excellent. Thank you.
Glad you like them! Rock on!
Thanks for the clear and concise explaination!
Glad it was helpful!
I've watched 20 marlin spike videos. Tie a wrench or screwdriver to pull my rope tight? Genius! Thanks!
Great job on the Snap-On tools!!!
The marlinspike hitch is also used to tighten seizing being wrapped around large diameter rope. The hitch is put on the end of the marlinspike, then using the large rope as a fulcrum, the the marlinespike levers the tarred marline (two strand hemp) around the large rope.
Glad to see you used a Snap-on wrench instead of a Garbage Freight peanut butter wrench .
Thank you! A great knot and your instructions made it easy to make.
trefor8 Thanks!

very good, thanks...
lee radio Thanks Lee!
Ty.
I had watched half the vid before realizing this as the slipknot I use for stringlines in my job.
I didn't even realize it until you said it. Marlin spike is just a slipknot
For when your plastic handle breaks on pull start lawnmower and all you have is a string.
Smart.
Marlinspike hitches used in a sheepshank instead of half hitches will allow it to hold even when the line is not under tension.
Nice.
Happy to share keep up the good work and thanks for the video.
Rock on!
Tranks, from Argentina.
:)
If I am pulling something ,will this knot tighten up so much that I can't u loosen ?
Edward Aguilar Just push the top of the knot back to release.
Hitches always untie easy. Knots do knot 😉
Are you traveling from the east or the west?
So its a slip knot....?
lol. That what I was saying the whole video. Yea. It is.
Why not clove hitch
Different knots for different tasks.
Lol. That's an ironworkers bullpin, not a marlin spike.
Uh oh. Busted.
End of a spud wrench ?
