  • Multiple example problems showing brute force and shortcut methods to find center of buoyancy, metacenter, and metacentric height, to determine whether a floating object will be stable or unstable.

How to find the metacenter starts with finding the center of buoyancy of the object, either when the ship is horizontal or already leaning to the side. Stability is determined by comparing the metacenter location to the center of gravity location.
The end of the video has brief discussion about ship design, and why you might want a small metacentric height instead of large. It may seem counterintuitive to prefer a higher center of gravity, but in some cases, that can result in preferable performance.
