As far as the father's bricklayer skills go, he is a good laborer, but he hasn't applied mortar between each brick. He's just laying courses of bricks. It's no wonder the brick walls can be pushed over by hand.
The main house was built either in the late 19th century or the early 20th century, and by actual masons. It has held up through numerous wars and one cultural revolution. The pigstye out back was built after the cultural revolution, when there were no more craftsmen to teach the next generation how to work well.
I see mortar being used. Between the brick ends got mortared from above as he laid the next course. You don't see daylight between them so they are properly laid, just done differently from the way we do it in our country. He puts extra mortar on each course and it's forced between each brick end below as he lays the one above..

Shouldn’t think so. All these videos are the same format. Boy/girl/couple, lose his/her jobs, run away together because parents don’t approve, renovate house for aged grandparent/aunt/uncle, are depressed etc. Halfway through the video it suddenly becomes a garden makeover and we never see the inside of the ‘house’ again, same with the puppies/kittens/piglet ( where do they disappear to?). It’s just creative content for the videos. The Chinese government is very keen to push the idea of idyllic life in rural China. 🤷♀️

Recycling secondhand building materials many times to build basic homes ,laws and regulations would not allow this in many parts of the world , foundations would have to be much deeper and stronger ,just a structure that can be dismantled and reused again,which is better for the planet rather than having to use new materials as in many western countries.
I love watching this type of videos, but I HATE when I sit through an hour of video and it NOT completed! They didn't show the finished product as a whole
