I must have been a weird kid but I was fascinated by these Cadillac's before I could walk. My grandparents bought an '85 this same color but the 4 door version, they pulled me out of school to go with them to get it. It was a happy day and I still remember how it smelled. I loved that car and took my drivers test in it. It ended up getting traded for a '94 Fleetwood. As an adult I bought a Town Car (and then 3 more) but I'll always have a soft spot for this body style Cadillac.

Michael Roberson I recall when the 1977 resized Cadillacs made their debut. And where was I in the summer of 1977? Detroit! These 1977 Cadillacs were the freshest and sharpest cars on the road at that time and really turned heads, especially in triple yellow! And their new car smell was completely intoxicating. But when the super downsized front wheel drive Cadillacs came around in the mid 1980s, for me at least, the party was over.

Beautiful car!!! Love that 80's RWD body style, even if they came with rather questionable engines. For what she uses it for, a weekend cruiser that doesn't rack up a ton of miles, the HT4100 is fine and it keeps the car original.
I still contend the best Cadillacs(at least ones post 1979 425 Cadillac big block) are the ones with Chevy V8's. Had a similar looking 1991 Brougham D'Elegance sedan. Bought that car for the looks and the engine, 350 Chevy was stock for that year. I drove the wheels off it, drove it from 100k to 130k miles in about 2 years, never a hiccup or problem from the engine/trans/drivetrain.

Thanks for sharing that one, too, Lou. Now, I am a Cadillac fan. In fact, I have two Cadillacs of my own. One of them is an '84 Coupe DeVille and the other is a '92 Brougham. The DeVille has an HT4100 V8 and the Brougham has the Chevy 305, 5.0 litre V8. Unfortunately neither is in show-worthy condition, though I wish they were and I wish I had the money to restore them, but I don't, currently have the wherewithal to have them restored. My first Cadillac was an '88 Brougham in triple black with a canvas, carriage-style top with "Presidential" on the sail panel, plus it had the gold package. That was a beautiful car. When that car, unfortunately, got totaled, in 2000, after having it for 5 years, I replaced it with a White 1989 Brougham that had a white, padded, vinyl top and a burgundy, leather interior. In 2003, I bought the '84, Coupe DeVille, then from the guy who was, then, the children's pastor at my church. It had belonged to his father-in-law who had passed away and left the car to his daughter, the wife of our, then, children's pastor. I, then, shortly thereafter, (about two weeks later), traded the white, '89 Brougham in for a light, metallic blue'92 Brougham, which was, then, in near mint condition. Unfortunately the weather in the Chicago, Northwest suburbs hasn't been kind to either car, which is why they're not either one in showing condition. Despite encouragement to sell my aging Cadillacs, for the time-being, I'm still hanging on to both of them, though I don't know for how much longer. They're nice cars even with their flaws and quirks.

Gorgeous perfect automobile. I owned the EXACT same car a few years back except mine was dark burgundy with a dark burgundy leather interior. I also had the factory 'tru-spoke' wire wheels. I've owned around 20 vintage Cadillacs through the years, mostly 1960's and 1970's cars. This was the newest one I have owned. But what a sweet car it was. A few quick notes.... The owner would be very smart to hang onto this car. This car, the 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brogham Coupe (Brogham Fleetwood lol. 2 thumbs up to the GM line worker that screwed that up. $25000 dealer price on this car wasn't enough to get it right....) anyways.., this car is the last ever rear wheel drive, body on frame, full size, V8 powered TWO DOOR Cadillac ever built!! From 1986 onwards if you wanted traditional Cadillac looks and ride with a full size body on frame, front engine, rear drive package..., it would be a 4 door. Think about that! The top trim level offering from Cadillac in a 2 door package that started in 1949 with the Coupe DeVille came to it's glorious and sad ending with this wonderful car. To this day I have NEVER forgiven Cadillac for doing that. The ONLY reason this car was even offered in 1985 was GM still had some leftover 2 door (Coupe DeVille) full size bodies remaining even though the Coupe DeVille was moved onto the smaller front drive platform and unceremoniously shoved down everyone's throats starting with the 1984 model year. So what better way to move all the 'old' rear drive 2 door coupes out of inventory than to upgrade the trim level to 'Fleetwood' and charge big $$$$ for them, because they were now Fleetwood Coupes? That's exactly what GM did, and when the bodies ran out in 1985, a legend of a motorcar died. These 1985 Fleetwood Coupes are truly beautiful. Ultra luxurious. They run silently and they ride like a dream. The HT4100 wasn't powerful but it moves these cars just fine. And the fuel mileage is unbelievably good for such a large car. I routinely saw close to 30mpg on the interstate with mine. The 'HT' stood for 'High Technology'. But it is more worthy of it's nickname, 'Hand Tightened'. When running correctly these engines are silent and smooth.., like balance a nickel on the air cleaner smooth. The owner seems to have a good grasp on the importance of the cooling system and oil services so I think she's in good shape. I've seen some of these run 150000 miles and more. Just don't run it for a minute if u think the fluids are mixing. Have it towed and evaluated. Best wishes!! Love the car.

@@jankypop-a-matic58 Lol you’re not gonna believe this, purely coincidental. My brother in law has “your” car and it’s for sale. Ok, so it’s not a Fleetwood, it’s a Coupe DeVille, but the difference is largely negligible. 1983, “Root Beer” brown, brown padded half top, chocolate brown leather, PLUS- the TruSpokes that I sold him from my ‘85 Lol. New paint, factory style painted pinstripes, spotless-looks ‘never sat in’ interior..., 45, 000 miles. I know Cadillac’s, I’m a tough critic. The car is nearly flawless like new condition, 9 out of 10. Not trying to sell it to you... but a coincidence so I had to respond:)

Beautiful car...these Fleetwood coupes are very rare. At just 125 horsepower, the 4.1 V8 was horrendously underpowered for this car...it was bad enough in the smaller DeVilles of the day. These big Fleetwoods changed very little from 1980-1991. Best bet is to find a low mileage 305 or 350 from the era, which can easily be dropped in to replace that anemic 4.1 V8.

Wow badge error on the landau top?!? That's incredible.
Inside at the rear headliner, there was a fiber optic panel with two red led like bulbs. They would light dim when the parking lights were on, and bright when the brake was depressed. This was how you could check if you had a rear bulb out. I always loved how GM integrated the 5 mph bumpers into the body lines on all their vehicles of the era. Really flowed seamlessly and gave the cars that long sleek look.
The 4100 was initially a fwd design. The reason you see the separate reservoir for the power steering was because the fwd power steering pump would not fit in RWD configuration with its attached reservoir. So GM had to redesign the pump to use a separate reservoir. By 87 all Caddies were FWD using the 4100, 4.5 and 4.9 into the early 90's. Only the Fleetwood remained RWD and it used the 305 or 350 SBC.
The 4100 was a junk motor for sure. It's biggest issue was aluminum heads on an iron block. Different expansion rates of the metals made short work of the head gaskets. Not a matter of if but when. What made it worse was the vehicles would overheat numerous times before shops/customers figured out it was the head gaskets. The heads would take a beating from all the overheating, and it was not uncommon for the heads to drop valve seats and grenade the engine. Even after a customer spent the money to repair the head gaskets. This permanently relocated a lot of these Cadillacs into the scrap yard. Eventually the aftermarket became privy to the failing valve seats and machine shops started to roll the aluminum slightly over the seat to keep it from falling. This worked, but the seats could still work themselves loose, and create a tapping sound whenever the engine was cold that would diminish on warm up. The tapping was the valves rattling the seats every time they opened and closed...

    Hi Lou,
Another review of one of my favourite cars: “Cadillac!” The lights you referenced on the corners of the front fenders were called “cornering lights.” They supplemented the headlights in order to make turns safer. As far as I know, Cadillac was the first manufacturer to introduce them in their cars in the early sixties. You might be interested to know however, that they were not the first attempt to make turning corners more safely. In 1948, automotive innovator Preston Tucker introduced a single “cyclops light” on the front of his revolutionary Tucker Torpedo. Connected to the car’s “steering gear,” it turned in the direction you were steering, thus making turns more safe. The car featured a number of other features that were considered revolutionary at the time, and I hope you’ll have a rare opportunity to review one in the near future. It’s an absolute fascinating automobile. Cheers!

Squared-off shape of this Cadillac about as American as they come - only the slab sided Volvo 240/740 came close (the 780 Coupé came closer still). Beautiful switchgear, comical 85 mph speedometer and I'm sure the experienced Cadillac owner can play "The Star-Spangled Banner" with those warning gongs on the dash. Best feature of this particular video for me is the enthusiastic and knowledgeable owner.

Broken power antennas, sagging headliners, deteriorated plastic inserts front and rear fenders and a blown 4100 are hallmarks of this era Cadillac. This one seems to have held up exceptionally well. It's too bad Cadillac stopped making the Fleetwood Brougham coupe. It was a nice car but a lot of collectors don't want the last few years of production because of the 4100. I have known some people to get 150,000 miles out of a 4100, but most didn't last that long. Many people didn't know how to take proper care of them, either, as the owner talks about here. Chevrolet continued making the Caprice 2-door through 1987.

I had the 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham De'Elegance back in 1989. The only problem with this car and mine is the 4.1 HT motor. It was the worst motor Caddy ever used. Always broke down and awfully underpowered at 135 hp for a big heavy car. In fact in the 80's the 4.1 HT motor was joked about. The 4.1 HT stood for 4.1 Hook & Tow. Because of it breaking down all the time.

She obviously hasn't had to deal with the HT4100 yet because there's only 27,000 miles. The head gaskets are the main issue due to the aluminum/cast iron mix between the heads and block. If you're lucky the engine never overheats. The heads may never fit right again once it overheats.
Many of these lumps were 800 pound paper weights at about 80,000 miles.
Ah the bad old days of General Motors. Their 2008 bankruptcy has its roots in cars and engines like this one.
