- AETHYRIEN - Berserkr (The Henbane Experience)
A berserker (Old Norse: berserkr) was a legendary Viking warrior thought to be immune to iron and fought in a brutal trance-like state. It has been debated for years whether or not berserkers consumed some sort of plant or mushroom before battle to obtain their brutal behavior. The Amanita muscaria mushroom was thought to be the source of their madness, however recent studies suggest henbane (part of the nightshade family) may be more believable. The flower produces the same effects written in the old texts describing these fierce men. Mix in the references of taking on the primal behaviors of beasts such as bears and wolves, the Berserkers were not exactly the good guys either. Without knowing the difference at times between friend and foe, they would absolutely obliterate anyone in their path.
There is a legend of the Stamford Bridge where a Viking berserker single-handedly held off the enemy line for two hours while the rest of his warriors regrouped. He finally died after being stabbed from underneath the bridge by long spears.
With influences of shamanism, psychedelics, and cinematic soundtracks, I was greatly inspired to write a song that gave life to these warriors pairing the driving beat with visuals imitating my personal experiences with psychedelics in the past. This video took me much longer than I would like to admit. Let me know what you think! I appreciate you checking it out :)

running tree branch to tree hunting the prey; moonlight beaming
streams and brooks glistening in the shine. Owls n Ravens fly as
the hunter becomes the hunted, what a night to have a curse.
A thunderous beast tears its way through the forest, tracking,
seething and frothing it be ravenous with hunger, it wails out.
A horrendous shrieking followed by a coughing, gagging and wet
gurgle came from it; Blood and game was its goal little to the
imagination had it, twas beast no more than man itself.
We have rowed our boats silently along the river, holding close to the banks. Our enemy lies ahead, full of himself, boastful, full of drink. Slowly, boat by boat, we are dropped onto the shore, hundreds of us. But stealthily and quietly we move deep into the woods, swords and shields our tools of destruction. Our enemy is loud and boisterous. He foolishly conceals our footsteps as we surround him. We await the sound of the horn and the scream of attack from our leader. Suddenly……..

As someone who practices the nameless faith (of which berserkers are a big part) I can confirm that you are correct about henbane. For my tribe anyway. Another tribe (which dominated in Scotland) used mushrooms instead. Different viking genetics needed different activation elements for the invocation. The song is just as important as the substance.
