    Justinian really had it all. Intellect, a best buddy who was among Rome/Byzantium's best if not the best general, a beautiful, strong, loyal, and supportive wife, loving family, grateful people, powerful army, a rich nation, and achieved his dream of bringing Rome back one last time as close as he and Belisarius could to her former glory.

      Lose a plague, move a bit faster, quell a couple of greedy insolent generals, get Germanus and that Goth queen wife in faster as Caesar and Queen of the West and Justinian might well have pulled it off. Possibly not so grateful people though...Given the Nika riots. But what an incredible story.

      Justinian and Theodora were degenerate monsters who bankrupted their country, ruined and tortured tens of thousands and failed to protect hundreds of thousands of Byzantine citizens. The brutal suppression of the Nika Revolt--why were they revolting if they were such capable, just leaders?--had killed thirty thousand aggrieved citizens, all for power.

    Your Theodora, though beautiful, has a round face and doesn't have the elegance and imperial superiority of the Ravenna mosaic. But then again maybe the real empress didn't have the breathtaking quality and spirituality of the mosaic! Maybe she was a more earthly lady. Anyway, as you wrote, Theodora fought against the trafficking and tried to help the victims, the girls and women of the Empire (with not much success...). I wonder if the feminists today know her interesting story.

    • @regertz
      @regertz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, she apparently tried to offer the street women and girls of Constantinople a chance to reform their lives as she had, in a sort of convent, but they loathed it so that many jumped from the windows. Yet her concern for women seems sincere and Procopius really did her and Justinian down in exaggerated fashion even claiming they were demons who could remove their heads... Of course General Belisarus suffered from her wrath but he did at least at one point shoot his mouth off about kicking her out if the Emperor died of illness and even of removing Justinian if necessary. Even then she spared him for Antonia's sake and for his friendship with Justinian, though she apparently grabbed half his fortune. Very interesting couples those two Belisarus was constantly cuckolded by Antonia but adored her while she seemed to love him in her way, protecting him from his rashness with Theodora, and they stayed together to the end and Theodora and Justinian seem to have truly loved each other in turn.

She wasn't Empress Irene, she seemed to embrace the "behind him role", she supported him and his rule, she didn't betray him and seek to rule herself. She was why he didn't flee during the riots early in his reign. She "had his back" as the saying goes. She was definitely "behind him". That is not necessarily a bad or even subordinate thing, everyone can't be #1, and in that realm at that time, she was definitely #2 as he was #1. It's that the reality of that situation, everyone in the Roman Empire regardless of the pre 476 A.D. Empire, or this era was behind, beneath, less than the Emperor, period.

    I have only recently discovered your work, and you consistently take my breath away. I'm an artist myself - drawing, some painting, sculpting - and I once did some digital work. Seeing your is so truly inspiring. I love the ancient and classical world, and while I don't know a lot about Empress Theodora, the way you've captured her shows a woman of power and almost good nature. Have you ever considered trying to do a later portrait? I'd love to see Marie-Antoinette of France given the Panagiotis treatment! Also, you are so handsome, but that's neither here nor there.

    • @miltospep21

      My friend, East Roman Empire's history is very little discovered by the West, I guess because of the Schism. It's equally fascinating and more complex than Roman history and even lasted longer. Oddly enough such rich history, apart from been studied and known by few, has never attracted the interest of the movie industry. There are countless movies about Rome, her wars and her achievements and none about Constantinople, the biggest and most glorious city in the world for 1100 years! I mean, they don't even have to write a script, you just open a book and it's like watching Game of Thrones! (yes there even existed a secret super-weapon like the one Cersei Lannister used to burn her rivals...)

      I agree, he never seemed to have gotten over her. It's possible that it was her idea to restore the West to the Empire. So when she died, that took some of the force out of it. She was the classic, "behind every great man stands a great woman" archetype. She greatly strengthened him and his reign. It's a shame she died at the normal age for people of that time, early 50's, had she lived on, they might have accomplished a more complete restoration of the Empire, they had only two main enemies left, the Visigoths in Spain, the weaker ones and the powerful Franks in Gaul/France and modern West Germany, after his victory in Italy.

      I love the stories of how she and Justinian tag-teamed in diplomatic maneuvering against the Vandals and the Ostrogoths with Theodora writing "in secret" to the rulers or to key aides that she could do anything with her husband so don't worry about bumping off your brother or cousin the king or queen while he would play the honorable diplomat urging restraint. I've always suspected that on her return to Constantinople from Libya and Egypt she quickly took up with the group of earnest young Eastern conservative reformers around Justinian who were determined to recover Roman glory after Emperor Anastasius I had stablized the economy and built up a huge treasury reserve and so they came to see themselves as fated by God to meet and save the Empire. And of course God wasn't too particular about what they might do to accomplish it. Brilliant woman really. And could be quite terrifying.

    I love the fact that she made everyone that entered the court bow down to her and kiss her feet. She commanded respect, it’s hard to disrespect someone once you’ve been smooching on their feet and toes. She was no one to mess with. She once made a nobleman beg for his life, ask her to please take his estate and his belongings to forgive him for theft. Still not satisfied, she made him beg her to sell his own wife and children into slavery to help pay her empire back. She agreed and actually sold his family into slavery, spared his life, and made him into her own slave. That’s a woman you’d better respect

    Are these inverted. Concerning the Eunuchs eyes. The painting show that the left eye is larger than the right eye. Then in the rendering it's flipped. I'm really perplexed how a face of such detail can be gleaned from a mosaic like this. The mosaic has full bushy eyebrows, and the rendering has thin arced eye brows. And other things I see that I won't go into. Are you using poetic license, to fill in the blanks? By no means am I a hater, I'm fascinated. That is why I think it would be interesting to find a sculpture of someone living to day who is actually alive and try this method on the sculpture to see how close it truly resembles the person.
