Thamud is modern day Petra in Jordan I believe, you’ll see those magnificent castles in mountains and yes it is a site of tremendous punishment
From my understanding, that the first Thamud (Al-'Ula) who got punished by Allah SWT, did not built palaces in Petra. It was the second one (the Nabatean) who were descendants of Shaleh and his followers. Their buildings and civilization the one that left as ruins that we can see today.
Where are the ruins of the people of Prophet Saleh (AS) then?. Do you know where?

Verse 89:9 states: "And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley." The verse in Arabic looks like (وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ) in The Quraan.
The mistake occurred in understanding the meaning of the verb (جَابُوا ) which in standard Arabic means "carved". However, this verb is used colloquially to mean "bring", hence the discrepancy. The script under the screen showed this meaning "bring". When the narrator cited another similar verse (at 4:35) he used the verb carve! After that the narrator went back to confusing the two verbs bring and carve!
The theory of bringing rocks from down the valley was related to building the pyramids in Egypt. Even there the meaning was misunderstood. The Quraan points out that the Pharaoh commanded his man named Haamaan to kindle a huge fire on mud which turned into stone with which they built the pyramids. In the case of Thamood, the action was not bringing rocks from the valley, but rather carving mountain rocks to obtain homes or other facilities. The site in my view is Petra, Jordan, which lies in Wadi Moossa (the valley of Moossa) where canals are clearly visible carved in the rocks and fitted with pottery pipes.
It is worth noting that God’s punishment is similar to the sin committed by deniers, such as the loud cry of a camel when it is slaughtered. God’s punishment came upon them from the loud sound of thunder. And so in most of the stories of previous peoples.
The ruins of the Tribe of Thamud are still present till this day into the Mountains and we can go see them but it is left by Allah for future generations to take lesson and donot follow the footsteps of Satan..

Great analysis! I’d like to add that this story is a great example of why asking God for a personal miracle is not the best way. As I understand this story, the miracle had an impact on 1 generation, but the generation that did not see the camel come out of the rock eventually resented the camel the most. It’s the youth, the teenagers that thought they knew better and got support from everyone in town who also resented the camel because they weren’t present when the miracle happened or were tired of having a giant camel walking around eating all the grass. The best miracle is the Quran, the living miracle that ended the cycle of ignorance.
