While everything is true, I also lend credence to the thoughts of Dame Rebecca West, who said that "All our Western thought is founded on this repulsive pretence that pain is the proper price of any good thing." I really can't argue with that logic - especially when the judge (or judges) determining who shall or shall not receive rewards in the form of 'the good things in life' are small, fallible human beings who can't see as the Most High can see.

This Elder always talks about happiness, joy, peace... Seeing him only talking about suffering, pain and frustration in the marriage is a little frustrating...

Joy and peace is only attainable through God's grace and marriage is more of a contingency to the lack of control over the passions than a attainment of God's grace. The difference between staying single or being married is if you'd rather suffer by yourself or with someone by your side. Marriage might bring fleeting comfort from certain passions but on the other hand will always maintain those flames

We are all called to be conformed to the Image of Christ, the Suffering Servant. In this fallen world, love is impossible without freedom and freedom, is impossible without suffering. Love, freedom and suffering - goodness often comes in threes. Glory to our Triune God! Christ is risen! Glory to God for all things!
