    You never lift for the winter, you never stake stuff. You rip stuff up and just shove it in somewhere else. A gap is an opportunity.
    I really love your attitude and your style. 💓

    He's the best...more energy than two people put together...love the comment "you might as well be moving furniture" if you're just replacing plants all the time...

      funny thing is, he's actually constantly moving plants in his videos. If you're moving perennials he calls it gardening but if you do it more intensively with annuals and bulbs then it's cheating. That's a stupid artificial distinction you're making. The style of Great Dixter superior in every way, because a lot of perennials flower for three weeks while annuals and bulbs like dahlia and cosmos can flower for months. It's simply how labour intensive you want to make it. The more effort you put in, the more result you get.

    • @franconianable
      @franconianable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He moves plants when they are not doing well or not working with the space as planned. That’s far different than replacing a plant that is out of bloom with one in bloom. That was the nuance there.

    "That's furniture moving - that's not gardening!" - John's thoughts on constantly rearranging a border garden with something new. He sure knows how to tickle this gardener's funny bone. Is Mr Lord an author? If he isn't, he should be. It would certainly make for an entertaining and educational read.

    Thank you so much for this video and showing us your beautiful garden!!! . I was so confused before about how to create a beautiful border after seeing so many gardens on tv. You clearly explained everything we need to know in just a short video giving the names of all the plants, a bit about them and also information on digging up, dividing and replanting plants. You have given me the confidence now to sort out my own garden and I’ve obviously subscribed and looking forward to watching all your other videos. Such an easy listening guy too. Verbascum grows wild in Greece. The flowers are yelow and I remember from my childhood my grandma used to pick a tiny flaky part of the flower which she used to put in a glass filled with half water and half olive oil. Then she part from verbascum flower would float on the oil inside the glass and I think she put a kind of tiny string through it and then light it in the night. Then she would hung that on a special hook from the ceiling with icons of Saints around the corner of the wall. She called it The kantili, or candle. It had to be lit all night to keep the bad spirits away.

    Love Thalictrums. My favorite for the flower and foliage is T Rochebrunianum. I believe its one of the parent's of T Elin.
    Funny I was thinking the same about Daylillies. Just get too untidy late in the season.
    I've also started growing more hardy geranium varieties after watching your videos. Especially Rozanne and Ann Thomson.

I don’t have any, yet, I’m my garden because the flower shops never have them, or seldom have them. They do grow and n my zone 7 here in the US south. Next spring I’m gonna give it a go and incorporate it throughout the garden and see if it can find some happiness somewhere....
