- Joey has a cough treatment 2x a day even when he has no respiratory illnesses. This treatment is performed on a morning he has extra secretions but no other symptoms. When sick he can be coughed as many times necessary to maintain a clear airway. In that case we have a schedule of every 2-4 hrs, or as needed. Before the cough treatment he normally will receive an albuterol mist followed by chest physical therapy (percussion style message)
This baby is an amazing champ and you can see how much he trusts him momma. This is love.

What a beautiful baby! He was so good through all of that, I was so amazed! Most kids would really fight you, but he opens his mouth to suction and follows instructions so well! God bless her

Thank you for posting this. I am a home care nurse and we do not see all of these therapies all the time. This helps me understand the processes you go through at home better than reading a book.

The machine inhales and exhales.I set the amount of pressure he needs. The inhale fills his lungs and the exhale pulls the air out simulating a cough. This is an old video, and we are using new positioning and higher pressure.

Thanks for sharing this video! I know a lot of time has passed since you posted this, but I was wondering if you might tell me why he needed the cough assist device? My son is 2 years old and has pretty significant tracheomalacia and I am wondering if he also has bronchomalacia. As a result, when he gets sick with a respiratory virus (frequently happens) he has a very difficult time mobilizing and clearing secretions and his illness lingers. He frequently needs to be hospitalized for this. We do chest physiotherapy with him. I can shake him all I want though, but if he's unable to actually clear his secretions, I don't see how it helps a whole lot. Thanks Again!
He had spinal muscular atrophy it causes the muscular to weaken. He can’t produce a cough because of his weak lung muscles so the cough assist is to get everything out that he can’t
My son had tracheomalasia, he grew out of it. The loud breathing followed by the apnea scared us to death. He was about 7 or8 when he grew out of it. I actually have never spoke to someone whose child had tracheomalasia.

Do you just suction his mouth and nose without using the cough assist machine? Do you ever just use the suction machine and not the Cough Assist Machine? How old was he in the video and How old is he now? Hope he is doing well!!

No but at this age many children cry because it’s forced air in and out to produce a cough....most SMA children have little to no cough to help clear their throat during illness/ or day to day like us. So using the cough assist becomes very normal and now he asks for a cough treatment when he feels he needs to cough. He would say “ no, it doesn’t hurt “ now but back then I’m not sure. Like I said I think it’s just confusing for such a young child. Joey was 1 here and will be 10 in April:)

I think she is concentrared. afternoon doing these so frenquently it becomes a little bit easier for us to use it and we do it automatically but trust me, she lo ves him and she does her best (-:

Laura Curtis my son is now 9 yo and has started receiving lifesaving treatment called spinraza. He wasn't supposed to make it past 2 yo. This was my learning process and I felt comfortable and still am with sharing because this machine saves lives . I know without it my son wouldn't be here today.
