  • Okay, don't take this one too serious please... 😊 I just thought it is fun to demonstrate how I start my PDP11/20 and do some fun stuff with it. It has been quite a journey to get is to the level where it is now. All the stuff came here in bits and pieces, the RK05 disk drives were meant to be scrapped, the TU56H was meant for parts only and had a few burned boards in it. The 11/20 itself had its own story where someone probably dropped something conductive on the backplane while it was turned on. So several TTL chips were bad... Baby steps and many hours...
    The last past which I still have to fix is a 4KW core memory module. Probably something for the next winter...

    This reminds me of a scene in a 70's or early 80's sci-fi film. I used to think all the computer equipment you would see in films was props. But I've come to realise that some of it was real life equipment, probably of from the era.

      Yeah a lot of the stuff in these sci-fi films were just props. But there is a very nice site 'starring the computer' and there you can see a lot of old computers which were used in several films.

    Good job on repairing the machine. These machines in an operative state are becoming rare.

    Came here from TT i'm not a sub of his, found him via a recommendation and I just wanted to come out of my way to say thank you. Thank you for sharing your wonderful card scans and information with them.
    As a fan of retro hardware and a lover of archival efforts to allow others to enjoy hardware I once played with in my youth it really means a lot when someone shares such a crucial bit of info that enables a piece of tech to go on into the future.
    Thank you.

      Good to sub! Helps the channel pop up better on the Yt algorithm which helps others to see the same good stuff that you're into.

    Used to work with PDP11s in the 70s used them for process control nice to see a machine still running - newer computer Sun, Intel, Microsoft never seemed to have has much character as the 11

    My dad said that his work in an electronics factory (Lenkert Electronics, Burnaby, British Columbia) in the 1970s had a PDP model that always crashed.

I've also redesigned the graphics boards for the PDP8/E family machines and can dun SpaceWar! on it. But I've never done a good demo on that one... So things to come...

    I must say that I have never heard someone apologize for being Dutch. A note about your microphone: the area you are in has some background noise, and it would help if you could enhance the pick-up.

    I wonder if an 11/05 is any faster than an 11/20? I know that they were microcoded cost-reduced versions of the 11/20 which had a few added functions, and could support semiconductor memory.

    • @proxxima038
      @proxxima038  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, I'm not sure actually. I have also a 11/05 so I should so a test to compare. But I don't think that the differences are quite big.

  • @infinitecanadian
    @infinitecanadian 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Why can you not switch the computer off right away (once you have switched off the drives, of course)?

    • @proxxima038
      @proxxima038  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is because there is also a little Linux computer inside (beagle bone) to emulate a few RL02 disks as well. Better shut it off decently to prevent data corruption

      The PDP11 runs on RT11

    • @brettbump9491
      @brettbump9491 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@proxxima038 The 11/20 will run more than just RT-11. The original paper-tape package (without a disk operating system was PAL-11). But you could also run DOS-11, and if you want a bit of a challenge, let me know and I'll help you get RSTS-11 going on it. You can't run RSTS/E on an 11/20 but at least you can get a feel for multitasking on an 11/20.

    • @proxxima038
      @proxxima038  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brettbump9491 Hi Brett, it would be nice to have more OS versions running on the PDP11/20. The papertape package was on my wish list to run on it. And multitasking would be very cool with RSTS-11! Do you have disk images fot these OS versions?
