Your video today on sewing struggles/fails really spoke to me today. I recently made a tiered dress pattern MCCalls 8090 labeled as easy and the collar just blew up. I just couldn’t make it work and used bias tape instead on that neckline. I struggled with the gathering using a gathering foot. Sometimes hand sewing/ techniques give you more control over using the machine. I watched some videos to understand gathering better and on the second dress saw not perfection but improvement and progress. Next time, I will pay closer attention to the placket. I say all this to make the point as you did that you can learn a lot from mistakes/missteps. Sewing is a lot of thinking around construction and problem-solving, not just running the sewing machine.
Listen...I totally feel your struggle from that pattern! That very pattern was also one of my failures, and I posted a video about it a while back. I still have that dress and I am going to revive it one day...LOL!
@@martikajmakes I’m getting ready to make it again. I refuse to be defeated ☹️ Thanks for your encouragement.🌹🪡🌹
Great reassuring, supportive advice! We all hate to "mess up," but it's pretty much inevitable to fall short, especially when we're new at something. We have to remind ourselves of the things we got right and try not to get too discouraged as we continue to learn. Sometimes we need to practice a technique more and sometimes we don't get a good match of the pattern and fabric b/c it's hard to imagine the finished product. After all, no one is born knowing how to do this stuff!
All so very true! Thank you!
I have been sewing for 13 years and sewing clothing items for probably 9 out of those years and I have a tub in my basement of finished failed clothing projects that I feel so guilty about.
@@Baileyt22 Don’t feel guilty. Fix what you can. Make them into something else. If all else fails, donate them. Try and figure out what went wrong and move forward. We’re human and we’re always learning. 🙂
Thank you soo much for that much needed support.I do feel confident as a beginner sewist still struggling with fit due to large abdominal fat and bc survivor ( lumpectomy) the lopsided bust area doesn’t bother me as much as the waist ethic needs increase,I enjoyed watching and listening to all your sewing survival strategies.I am putting things in place one project at a time. Again thank you sooo much to this most needed inspiration information.
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on being a survivor! I can understand how that would be a struggle. I would suggest watching some videos on "grading out a pattern" in the areas you need it. I believe that would help and I'm so glad this video helped. Thank you!
Girl, those zippers used to get me, too!
I also started basting a lot more to keep the integrity of the project. Yes it’s a little more work, but the outcome is worth it!
Slowing down on the lead foot with that pedal is key as well!
With silky fabrics, pressing with heavy starch/sizing makes sewing so much easier. Fatmata uses gelatin to stiffen slinky fabrics.
Wow! That gelatin information is interesting. I admit, I have a lead foot too and I have to hit the brakes often! 😂
My big fight was setting in sleeves. I struggled with that for like two years. I hated the process of sewing sleeves, so much so that I had stopped sewing patterns with sleeves for a while, lol😂 ma'am, you are talking to me. I have a video in my que that uploads this week that speaks to a lot of what you're talking about in this video! Thank you for sharing your experience with the community. ❤ Blessings!
LOL! That's how I was about zippers for a while!😂 You are welcome and thank you!
I messed up by sewing a garment on fabric that should have been sewn with knit, but I chose Cotten with no give.
Been there! That's one of those lessons that makes us pay really close attention to those suggested fabric options.
Martika, thank you for this video it helped me so much.
I'm so glad this helped! Thank you!
So true and so funny! Actually learn a lot by those mistakes…
Oh yes!!! We even know that sometimes we have to laugh to keep from crying when they happen!😂
Great inspiration
Thank you so much!
Necklines! Oh my goodness, and every top has one lol
Just about! LOL! It does get easier.
Great video! Great tips and I will persevere 🙂
Oh, my gosh! All of your points resonated with me. I loved this video. New subscriber as a result.
Thank you so much and welcome!
I'm in a failed funk.😢
Don't give up! Try a tried and true pattern on a cool new color or print. Maybe add just a little ruffle or something to it.
@@0920PBarnes okay 👍
Aaawww, Zelda. It's ok. We all get that way sometimes. I usually just grab something quick and easy to pick myself back up.
Are you talking to me Martika???😅😅😅
I'm talking to all of us!😂
