- Installing a fish finder on any kayak without the Lowrance Ready feature is easy when you use Hobie's Rudder Installation kit. In this video, Howie demonstrates all the steps necessary for installing a Hook2 4x GPS on the new Mirage Passport. This is the perfect introductory kayak fishing system for a young angler, or minimalist that needs just the essentials for wrangling trophy fish.

Very nice of Hobie as a company to offer a affordable kayak (passport), and supply a option/ assesory to add a transducer if you want one. Bravo!
Thanks for a great video! :) Does the rudder ready mount also fit Garmin fish finder transducers popular with kayak fisherman?
Will this also allow you to install a Hummingbird Helix 5 DI GPS transducer
Someone needs to make a wireless Transducer🤔Maybe I will million dollar idea.
Will it work with Hummingbird Helix 5 di gos units?
Count how many times he says "go ahead"... And that sexy porno background music is awesome!
Why did you use the three-way plug on the rear of the kayak? In the video, you said it was because you didn't have a rear hatch installed on the passport. I do have a rear hatch on my hobie 10.5" (installed it myself) where I plan to put the battery. Should I use the one way plug on the rear instead? If so, why?
The only reason I used the 3-way plug on the rear of the kayak is because it doesn't require threading on a backing ring and since I had no hatch installed in the cargo deck, the 3-way plug is an easier install. With the hatch installed there, I'd use the 1-way plug in the rear and the 3-way plug up front to accommodate more cables exiting the hull.
@@HobieOfficial That makes....a lot of sense. Thanks! I was able to complete this install because of your tips.
Will rudder pulls support heavier transducer like Garmin Striker plus 4cv? Installed on rudder, seems to have a lot more friction.
The best options, especially for this Passport rudder are the smaller skimmer transducers like the Bullet and SplitShot transducers from Lowrance. With some of the larger, heavier transducers it's best to mount those over the side, or on a model with the Lowrance Ready or Guardian transducer mounts.
Does this effect steering in anyway? Definitely a cool setup regardless
No affect on the steering! Still our recommendation is to keep the transducer to one of the smaller models like the Lowrance Bullet or SplitShot
Can this kit be used to mount a splitshot transducer or does it only work with bullet style transducers?
A SplitShot will mount the same way as the Bullet transducer. We don't recommend mounting anything larger than the SplitShot however because it can affect the performance of the rudder.
@@HobieOfficial great! Thanks for the response. Will the splitshot affect the rudder performance in any measurable way?
@@stevensolowsky7491 We've used the rudder mounted SplitShot setup quite a bit, from flat water to open ocean and it's performed very well. If you experience it pushing the rudder out of the water at very high speeds, just tighten up the bungee that keeps the rudder deployed.
Will the new transducers .not shoot through the hull of a kayak like they do on a fiberglass bass boat ?
You can still goop them in an shoot through the hull, but there's more chance for error in the installation and this is a sure way to get clean reads and accurate water temps - plus, no mess with goop!
Duct seal works fine. Haven't had any issues in the passport with duct seal trancducer n hull. $2
ItsDLC what fish finder did you install in the hull?
how would this kayak perform in open sea ?
This kayak was not designed for open ocean and rough water, but it really comes down to your personal comfort level and knowing your limits. We think this kayak is right at home on flat water, inland waterways, lakes and ponds.
@@HobieOfficial
thank you
Can this be used on my older outfitter tandem?
Absolutely !
Can the transducer not be installed in hull?

I liked it till the battery took my only storage
Hobie offers the option to add an additional 8" round hatch in the cargo area for more internal storage:
Hobie part # 71702001
HATCH 8" TWIST-N-SEAL KIT
@@HobieOfficial can I add the additional 8" hatch on a 10.5 passport, front or rear?
@@Chaldo_off-road did you get an answer?
@@charleswayne8595 nope
You do know this guy put it on backwards facing away from the kayak not towards the bottom of the kayak
Transducers work by shooting a 360 degree pattern. The epoxied "face" of the transducer is how the device is assembled at the manufacturer. You can literally point it straight down if you were so inclined.
