  • Lomelok, one of the African lion cubs born on January 9, 2023 at Lincoln Park Zoo, has experienced mobility challenges since infancy as a result of a narrowing of the channels that carry the nerves from the spinal cord. Recently, he underwent a series of tests to determine how his conformational condition has been progressing, and the zoo’s veterinary team, along with partners at MedVet, have determined that Lomelok will now undergo spinal surgery.
In this video, the zoo’s Lester E. Fisher Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Kathryn Gamble, D.V.M., and Senior Associate Veterinarian Dr. Kate Gustavsen, D.V.M., explain the process and its risks.

Without the surgery, would he eventually become paralyzed? What would happen to him if he were in the wild? Poor guy. Fingers crossed.

This is an unusual diagnosis for a lion cub. It is clear that Lomelok would not have survived in the wild and would have been left behind by his pride.
