Coronado, CA is my home town. Dad was a nuclear submariner for 26 years, retiring an O6 in 1980. We moved a lot and always came back to Coronado where my Mom grew up, her dad being a WW2 navy doctor. I have known and later worked with SEALs when I was an AFSOC gunship pilot in the 1980s/90s. All outstanding guys with skills and a great sense of pride and honor in their job as SEAL operators. Thank you, Clint, for sharing your amazing stories and recounting some of the more painful operations that resulted in the loss of your fellow SEAL brothers.

Thanks Clint! This has to be one of the most thorough Vietnam war SEAL personal stories I've ever heard. I got to work with (TAD barracks cleaning) three of you guys while they were waiting for the next BUD/S class to start in 67. All three made it through, with two becoming SEALs and one going to UDT. Back at work with my Coronado unit, ACB-1, and working in Building 52 if I remember, I must have heard, during BUD/S morning warmup PT out in front of their office and barracks on the east end of the base, "drop and give me 50", followed by "Hooyah Olivera.....hooyah" countless times.
In Vietnam I got to support one of them, but didn't know it until the op was over, and that was the last time I saw "Abe". While in barracks cleaning, he had briefly talked to me about joining them in the next BUD/S class, but gave up when I mentioned I had defective color vision! Regretfully, Abe passed away in the early 2000's, most certainly from something agent orange induced.

Frank Bomar was my Classmate. He was a huge man physically ( 6' 5" and at least 260 lbs !) and personality wise ! A very powerful swimmer but was in the "goon squad" on the runs. Instructors, including Chief Allen, were amazed he survived training.
Mike Collins had arrived in UDT 11 when I returned from VN from my two tours in December '67 but I was discharged on the 5th so never interacted with him. I had been an All-American swimmer at a rival HS in the Bay Area and swam against him in HS and AAU meets. I was shocked to hear of his death a few years later.

If it is any mental consolation, I am sure you may know the story behind a popular South Vietnamese General called 'Big Minh'. He is the explicit Officer who was apparently ordered to find Prime Minister Diem, and assassinate him, allegedly on orders of the CIA itself. Big Minh found Diem hiding in a tank, and personally knowing each other, asked Diem to open the cover. Diem did so, and Minh shot him dead. Ergo, Regime change to a more Washington-favored Prime Minister. Later, it was learned that Big Minh's own brother was a General's Rank Viet Cong soldier, who apparently worked with his brother for mutual survival and convenience... or so I have read. No proof given.
