You think it’s blowing your mind in 2024, imagine dropping the needle on it in June of 1967… Nothing like it before.. it went from Rubber Soul in 1965 to Revolver in 1966 and then this spun the music world on its head… in 1967.
Sergeant Peppers was released on Friday, Jimi Hendrix gave a show on Saturday of the same week, with all the London Rockstars in attendance, including John, Paul, George and Ringo and Eric Clapton and several others. He opened the show with Sergeant Pepper’s lonely hearts club band, which had only been out for 24 hours. Paul McCartney said that it was stunning to hear Jimmy play their song that had just been released.
It was Paul McCartney who recommended to the producers of the Monterey Pop Festival that Hendrix be given a slot to perform there. And he did, just two weeks after playing Sargeant Pepper in London in front of the Beatles.
As I'm sure you know, on his Sirius show he would never play two songs by an artist, except for The Beatles, who he always played two songs in a row. He'd say "Why? Because they're The Beatles." 🔥
I was a kid in 67. I was spending that summer with some dull realatives. The girl next door, roughly my age, had the new Beatles album. We played this every day. We're still friends
if it makes you feel any better (not that u need it), I was a kid in 2002 when I heard this album and suddenly, music had a standard and a meaning in my life
Here it is 57 years later and both Paul and Ringo are still touring, with Paul regularly preforming SPLHCB while Ringo belts out WALHFMF at every show. Nothing short of amazing!
Considered by many as the greatest album of all time. The evolution/revolution of the Beatles started with a few songs in Rubber Soul, many more in Revolver album, and then it came into fruition fully with this one. Everyone at the time fell over. Roger Waters of a newly created Pink Floyd was driving when he heard this and said he almost drove off the road. There is no "Dark Side of the Moon" without Sgt. Pepper, no Close to the Edge by Yes, none of those kinds of things. With The Beatles, as one Professor of Musicology from Oxford (I believe it was) said, the popular music was transformed from "ritualistic dance music into art". Absolutely. They had sounds in their heads and invented ways of getting them together on those multitrack tape machines (tape!), and the record company could not do a damned thing about it. Because they were the effing BEATLES and they ruled the music world.
Lonely Hearts Clubs were places where lonely people could meet after WW2 in England. For the Beatles ...and the Hippies....everyone on earth is part of the Lonely Hearts Club.
So strange to see anyone hearing this for the first time and I’ve know every breath of this album all my life. I remember my sister buying it and having to hide it from my dad. Mom was cool and loved “modern” (60’s/70’s) pop music and LOVED the Beatles.
As a 10 year old in 1967, Purple Haze and the “Are you experienced” album, released 2 weeks prior to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and this song blew my mind and changed Rock music. May 12 and 26, 1967. I feel that the two tracks I mentioned were the beginning of a heavy metal sound. Only one month later Jimi was reintroduced to America at Monterey Pop Festival thanks in large to Paul McCartney.
The song is actually supposed to introduce "With A Little Help From My Friends", so when you go to listen to that song, listen to them both together as they were meant to be heard. And don't forget to check out their "Magical Mystery Tour" album.
To quote Sir Paul from this song: "It's wonderful to be here. It's certainly a thrill." Great (and funny, lol!) reaction, guys, to the first sweet tune of this marvel-filled album! "carnival" is a great word for it, as you'll see on, say, "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"! Speaking of "medleys,", as with the first two songs, it's advisable to let the last two songs ("Reprise"/"A day in the life" melt into each other as well.
This album is what the Beatles are all about. Everything leads to this moment. And they pull it off unbelievably well. What comes next in rock, Bowie, Prog, anything artistic, has its roots in this album, even if the music is a reaction to it in a negative way. And for the Beatles, after this, the only way was down.
The one & only Beatles ! They were recording this while Pink Floyd was recording also at Abbey road , it was a huge influence on Floyd … this album is so fun & unique . As always you guys are a delight to watch !!
No, Paul wasn't the lead guitarist for the Beatles. That went to George Harrison, who was much better guitarist than Paul. Even though Paul lays claim to many Beatles accomplishments, only after John and George's deaths.
@@or529 Do some research. Start with the most obvious one. It's common knowledge that Paul played the guitar solo on George's song "Taxman" - something that disappointed me 45 years ago. Look up songs on The Beatles Bible site, or just Google "Who played the guitar solo on "Taxman", and you will find Harrison himself talking about it. The next most obvious one is that part of the song "The End" on Abbey Road, where they each play three 2 bar solos - in the order of Paul, George, and John. Then there are articles in guitar magazines like Guitar World's "Paul McCartney's 6 Best Guitar Solos With The Beatles". Look up any song on The Beatles Bible site, and they give the recording details, song backgrounds, and things that the Beatles, George Martin, or the engineers present have said about the songs in interviews. For example, after Harrison wasn't having any luck nailing the "Taxman" solo, it was George Martin's suggestion that Paul have a try. Why would Harrison and everybody else present lie about it ? There are also some Harrison solos on other people's albums I didn't know about years ago - like the slide solo on Alvin Lee's song "The Bluest Blue".
The Sgt. Pepper concept was all Paul's. Funny story behind it you can look up. The rest of the band wasn't really sure about the idea of this fictional band they had created, but they all contributed greatly to the record. Ringo got to sing a song, George brought Indian music into the fold, and perhaps John's best work ever with "A Day In The Life".
Trip to New Orleans. My grandparents played this on repeat. The older I get, the more I get it. God Bless Y’all absolute Legends. Thank y’all for being you. Real Music Fam
This known as the first concept album , though John Lennon didn’t think it was . The idea was to create a fictitious band and that way the Beatles would be free to experiment and make music without pressure . The best song is A Day In the Life which redefined what a pop song could be … this is an amazing album a mix of music styles and psychedelia i hope you love it as much as i do
The production and sonic experience were a step change. Notice it sounds far more contemporary than previous albums, that's because it was the first full album to really sound this way (i.e. the way most pop/rock has sounded ever since). Difficult to appreciate what it was like to experience in 1967. The rudimentary Rock and Roll sounds of Elvis etc were only just 10 years old at that point.
I remember , way back when, sitting in my driveway with some friends and this came on the transistor radio and we all sat there is stunned silence. this album changed everything. Also you really should play the first two songs together as one without a break.

You have listened to many Beatles. I would love to see you react to James Gordan's "Paul McCartney Carpool Karaoke" but you need to listen to a few songs first. They will be singing them in the car. "Penny Lane" "Let It Be" "Black Bird" "When I'm 64" "She Love's You" "Come On to Me" "A Hard Day's Night" "Ob_la_De Ob_la_Da" "Love Me Do" "Back In The USSR" "Hey Jude". DANG! I didn't realize they went through so many songs on Carpool Karaoke!

Try to get your hands on the film, "It was 20 years ago today, the Beatles and 1967" truly an accurate look of the times it was created. Love that film. Hard to find.
The atmospherics of the audience served as amazing transitions.

Spot on. And to think you’d be knee deep in the White Album in another 15 months
There was always anticipation for a new Beatles album, this one most of all. Lots of "buzz"!

There will never, ever be a better Band at their craft then The Beatles. Thank you George Martin and the hard working blokes from Liverpool!
