      I am in northwest Iowa. Spirit Lake, the Okoboji area.
      I've been looking for someone in the same general area to talk to about what they are doing and when they are doing it.
      Last year I bought a large shelving unit and grow lights...then I started things way too early and that was a big mistake.
      I haven't started anything yet this year.
      I just moved the seed starting rack to my laundry room and need to set up the lights and the timer as well as heat mat.
      I know leeks need started early indoors....

    Such a helpful list. I appreciated your clarifying that your use of Hoops and covering is how you are hardening off cool season annuals. I thought that was the case, but helpful to hear it from our go-to farming expert!

    Hello from Minnesota 🥶🥶 2/13/22 it was -29 F last night, warmed up to -4 F today……I’m dying to get my hands in the dirt !!!!!
    I’m zone 3 so it’s tooooooo early to start most things but I did start celery because it is super slow, it needs 4 months in the house 😏
    And I started a few slow growing herbs like lavender, sage, rosemary….
    At least I got a little fix 🥰
    Love your channel !

    Thank you Lisa. I have your book and this is the second year I will be doing cool flowers, so very excited. One thing that confused me was the term "sowing", to me that always meant sowing a seed but I think it's used in your book to include setting out starts or seedlings. I am trying to find which method works the best for my area (Denver area). I am testing fall direct sowing and will also try to set out the same as little plants to see which works better. But finding the fall planted flowers definitely are earlier and stronger.

    Okay, so when you say it must be 60 deg or lower, and holding…how MUCH LOWER is still acceptable for planting outside? I live in Michigan and sometimes our springs are quite cold! Ty

    I would add to your recommendations to segregate your seeds by germination length. If you mix seeds that germinate in 5 days with seeds that germinate in two weeks, then you get early risers that need to go under high power lights. The long time germinators do not like the strong overhead LED lights before they breach the soil surface. Separate your short and long germinators into different trays. Initially, I like most home gardners, favored 10x20 inch trays that can hold 70-85 1.5 inch soil blocks per tray. I decided that having a few 10x10 trays around is useful to handle those instances where you have to segregate some longer germinating seeds for separate handling. This is inherent in your setup where you use smaller trays for your soil blocks.

    In Zone 7b Georgia I learned that tomatoes succumb to blight when planted in May. It rains for weeks in the summer . So I have better success planting tomatoes in late March to early April.

    When you plant the 3/4" plugs in the garden, do you use the large block nippers to make the planting holes or do you use a shovel?

    Hi Lisa. Thanks for all the information. I have another question. If you have time to give me some insight, I would truly appreciate it. I tried to grow some Angelonia this year, and the seeds germinated, but they never grew. This also happened with a batch of snapdragons.with both, the seeds were in cell trays. The Angelonia was in seed starting mix, and the snapdragons were in regular potting soil. I do everything you discussed on this video, and I had success growing snapdragons in soil blocks this year. The snapdragon seeds that didn’t grow were the same seeds from the same packet that grew in the soil blocks. Any thoughts?

    I'm in Long Island (7a). Is it too late to start snapdragons? This is my first time starting seeds indoors. What flowers should be started now in my zone?

    Do any of your rules for cool annuals apply to perennials? For example, are something like echinacea, started from seed, zone 3, enjoy being planted out at 3-5” seedlings? Just bought the book and binging your channel, thanks!

    My seed shed is cold at night and warm during the day. 40-75 degrees. Is that bad for cool season flowers?

    • @TheGardenersWorkshop
      @TheGardenersWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will be stunned from the chill each night-so if they grow it will be much slower.

    Does the the lumen measurement determine the height from the seedlings?

    • @TheGardenersWorkshop
      @TheGardenersWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The heat given off by the bulbs is what we follow. I prefer t-8 & t-12 lights, they are warm which benefits growing but doesn’t overheat.

    Can I sow cool season seeds without stratifying, zone 8a indoors? I missed stratification due to health problems. I still have 8 weeks until my last frost date. What won't grow without stratification? Is it too late to stratify them in soil in the fridge and then sow them either indoors or out? Help.

    • @TheGardenersWorkshop
      @TheGardenersWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cool season hardy annuals I speak of and in my book Cool Flowers don’t require stratification. So not necessary.
